I make vids to champion folk music & the instruments used to play it.
I love the old stuff, and I love sharing what I've gleaned off records from these early innovators. I favor rag-time fingerpicking and 20's-style plectrum playing most, but I get around to all kinds of stuff.
I plan to use this KZread Channel to promote facility in my favorite string traditions ranging from fingerstyle guitar, 20's style early jazz playing, as well as folk fiddle, and old-time banjo traditions.

So far I'm doing well with it! But when you get to the F chord and say "the second time you have to drop your thumb with the hammer," I don't see where this is in the tab.
Phil here from Kat Eyz Capos. It looks like the capo you got from Reverb is damaged and actually the wrong model width for that guitar making it not self center properly. I'll gladly replace it for you since they carry a lifetime guarantee. That is an antiqued style as opposed to my Steampunk. I look forward to hearing from you. Really enjoyed your video!
great analysis, subscribed
I say yes and if so WOW what a find! This type of content is what the internet was invented for.
i just picked up a full sized h929 from a local antique store for 35 dollars i've yet to put strings on it and im still debating if i wanna customize it at all but i thought it was a cool little find and it even came in a cloth button up case!
Why poke it through why not wrap it around
These lessons are great. I'm becoming a little obsessed with BBF! Thanks Kyle!
Are you in standard tuning?
Yup! Just capoed up!
Thanks!! Man i have been listening to alot of RJ and while yes it might sound repetitive the well of licks slide playing little chromatic movements and fills is pretty amazing 95 years later he is still an influence on alot of people that says alot
Excellent!!!!! Love this easily explained video as well as you being so personable!!!!!! Thanks, Terry
Glad it was helpful!!!!
Isn't the guitar playing very, very similar to the standard "John Henry" arrangement?~ Seems like Daniel's must have adjusted that and used "new" lyrics.
Daniel's*
Auto-correct is awful .
Funny story : - You've had 1.4 K views in two days, which is actually pretty impressive for such a good video about an almost unknown guitarist. While I was watching it I couldn't help noticing a vid down the right hand side about three solos G Harrison couldn't actually play. It has had 60 K views in three days, and I had to watch it because I think GH is pathetic, and I wanted some good examples. On the first track the " solo " is obscured by JL overdubbing a harmonica, on the second, GH pulls it off easily - at half speed, courtesy of GM's " wizardry ", and on the third, PM replaced the guitar solo himself. So if you want to boost your views, perhaps you should study this ? kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZGeG2dF7o5ffccY.html
I've got to say that the " discovery " was the least amazing thing I've ever heard ( sorry about that ........... ) . Funnily enough, what did surprise me was finding that The Band stole the title. The upshot of this, of course, is that I realise I've been doing BBF a serious disservice all these years, which I'll be starting to make up for this very day. The only guy I am really familiar with from the old days is Willie Johnson, who I consider to be far and away the " King of the Blues " . Great vid !
Great info, DISGUSTING joke to start a video about a guitar's beauty. WTF? Sorry... didn't need that. Not gonna qatch any more of your vids. Goodbye
1969, I was 16 when I started working with 78's and Reel To Reel slowed down to 1 7/8th ips. Note by note 55 years later is not possible with my hands, nor desirable. But "you" are doing heroic work beautifully made available. I like your comment "song maintenance." Shows your commitment to authentic and accurate preservation of historical music arts! This weekend my trio and I performed 60 songs over 4 hours at a house warming in St. Paul. I played Hesitation Blues, Alices Restaurant (5 minute instrumental) because they didn't believe anybody fingerstyles that anymore.... like what??? Sure! And listen real close... he did and the look as all the little notes were there. But perfectly faithful renditions like yours with tabs? Man... I don't even try. Clinical ADD and Ragtime Blues are a catch as catch can, spotty duo on a good day! Great work Kyle!
I learned this stuff from the modern master of Ragtime and Country Blues… Stefan Grossman.
Heck ya!
Great work Kyle. May I ask what camera you are using here?
Thanks dude! It’s a Sony zv-e10. Kinda an older camera by now, but it does pretty good!
Amazing. It's so great that young people like you are playing and analyzing this music, and keeping it alive. You clearly love it and that makes me happy. ♥
Hey thanks dude! Yeah I love this shit, love that others do too!
I feel like I've never sang this song the same way twice, lol
Hahha totally
Another great vid!. At 1:20 when you mention how his timing is perfect between two different take, which I agree super impressive, but it reminds me of a conversation between a high level professional guitarist and his fan. The fan said "Man, if I could play guitar as good as you, I'd play all day!"... and the guitarists responded, "Well, the reason I play this good is BECAUSE I play all day." :) Seems obvious, but some people do play A LOT more than others and are that much better cuz of it. Blind Boy Fuller played at that high level cuz of playing all day and thus it was second nature to FEEL the timing......an amazing feat nonetheless. Victor Wooten, the amazing bass player, has a book called "The Music Lesson", a trippy novel of sorts, one of my favorite books, but in one of the chapters it's all about keeping that internal metronome no matter the distractions. He has since wrote a second book, The Spirit of Music, which I have to haven't started it yet. Thanks for the vid!!!!
Is there a link to the original video? I just wanna hear it.
It’s at the end of his fretboard journal interview
We do estate sales. I have both an LG-0 and a Chet Atkins in the mix. Any thoughts? I’m a casual player picking a Blueridge now, but thinking about bringing the LG home.
Oh yeah can’t go wrong with either of those guitars! Even if they need work, I think it’s totally worth your estate sale investment!
Boring😉
Hey bro, love the video, do you have a tutorial on the song you played at 2:35? Sounds great
New subscriber, thanks for the video
Yeeeeah bud!!
Just one salty detail, when coming back to E the second time, she would play an E major just one beat, then E minor 😮
Niiice
I always play in a dropped 4ths tuning, usually in C (CGCFA#D#). I think it has something to do with starting out as a 6 string bass player. Also Devin Townsends open C tuning was a big inspiration, though I don't play in open C too often
Just a user's experience..Kat Eyz capos (handmade by Phil Wyatt) have never bound up on me and I have 3. Phil is a great guy and will actually custom make your Capo if needed. My favorite by far and I have many that are much more expensive!
diiiiiiig .. .
would love to hear you do CARELESS LOVE by fuller-and maybe discuss how he actually played it.
Love this - having fun learning it!
Excellent!! Stoked to hear it!
I realized you did play some of the song. Thanks.
Yep! At the beginning up to speed and slow at the very end.
Sorry, but I don't recall this tune. Did you play the song during this video ? If you did I missed it. I did enjoy your explanation of each chord, but without any context... I left somewhat wanting.
I learnt this from Woody Mann's "Blues Anthology" and he slides into the A from the first fret. I think your way is more like the record and sounds better. Wizz Jones does a nice version, check it out, in his percussive style. He showed me once how he does the turn around as I was having trouble with it
Heck yeah, tons of ways to do it! Fun to mix and match everyone’s versions too!
Thank you and I truly enjoy the way you put yourself out there to learn the song as you show us. Just great
Thanks Roger. Glad showing the process was helpful for ya!!
Vegeta, what's the scouter say about how many tenor banjos they manufactured?
Ok Ok I've been putting off trying them but if I don't like em I'm gonna stick with EB.
So far I’m loving them and absolutely no shedding. I haven’t played EB’s in forever, they still shedding like a snake on a summer day?
@@kostringworks Ok I'm gonna try them against the EB aluminum bronze strings.
Thanks 👍
My god dang pleasure!! 😊
Being a guitarist and too lazy to learn the banjo I bought a guitar banjo 2 years ago in eager anticipation. However, I just can't get it to sound like a genuine banjo at all and all I can think of is its because of the way a 5 string is tuned? Mine wasn't particularly cheap at £600 but it just sounds dull.
Yeah for sure, all the banjo families have a unique tuning so def hard to achieve what one does without having the actual instrument. That said, guitar-banjos can sound fantastic had their own thing!
Amazing! Love Mississippi John Hurt. He’s a treasure. Thanks so much for this.
Absolutely!
Where do I find the tab for this?
full tab is up on the patreon! www.patreon.com/posts/full-tab-for-68528626
Dad john hurts museum has been burnt down..❤🙏
So tragic.
Yes g7, ..lol typo
Gotcha! Yeah those are great.
You will always get new people wanting to learn, so no worries.
True! So the process continues!
Excellent Video ! Great tab and demo,, Billie would laugh out loud , if he saw this video. He is not that far from his Traverse City roots ,, Loves and appreciates his fans , everyday.
Ha! Thanks dude! I hope he’d get a kick out of it, but I’m sure glad you did too!
what guitar are you playing?
@@MrCubannn it’s a Fraulini! The model is the Erma. Great little ladder braced guitar.
Nice one Kyle. Am a big fan of the thumb for the bass notes, but my hands don’t always agree 👍🏻
@@billallen1594 Ha! Yeah we don’t have all Dakota Dave Hull hands.
THANK YOU!!!! sooooo much for this!!! LOVE Blind Boy Fuller!!!! and BY EAR!!! Thanx again!!!
Absolutely! It’s such a bad ass tune! It loops in my head at all hours since this transcription. 😂 have fun with it!
Put on the 6 octive strings for a 12 string guitar remove the back cover and stuff a piece cloth between the steel adjustable rod and the head to mute the sound a little and see it you don't like the results when you play. I did that to my Gretch and I do like how it sounds
Def the first time anyone has suggested that to me! I just might!
