I read it AND I live 20 miles from the town where he grew up. 1. He had a neglected childhood with a drug addicted mother. His grandma and other relatives depended on social services to be able to give him some stability. Then in the last chapter he (as an unremarkable student) 2. mysteriously gets sent to Yale and flips to saying that no other child should get social services as he did because "government can't solve society's ills"

He never talks about real problems because he is kind of involved in keeping those problems going forward.

Hollywood directors: “we are gonna make a show highlighting major issues with teens” “Can teens watch the show?” Directors: “oh no, it’s an r rated show with graphic nudity, it’s a show for adults” “So you’re sexualizing teens?” Directors: “No, the actors are adults tho!” “Why would an adult want to watch a show about teens getting it on and doing drugs when you can just make a show about adults getting it on and doing drugs, and it can also be a social commentary” Directors: “BECAUSE I WANT IT- I mean… teens do stuff like this all the time” 😊

Why is no one questioning Vance's use of the phrase "corporate oligarchs"? What does he mean? Who is he signaling? I guess "childless cat ladies" took over the narrative, but he should be taken to task for all the bullshit he has said.

JD Vance's wife has a career based on her education. She didn't marry into a wealthy lifestyle, if that is what you imply.

  • @stutter_box

Not in the slightest. I’m genuinely confounded by people who choose partners who actively work against them in terms of policies. Trump’s wife is also included here, though she has even more things to be ok with given her husband’s prolific filterless speeches and behaviour

@@stutter_box Trump's wife comes from a service background in which most of the clientele have features in common as in aggressiveness, narcissism, and self-aggrandizing while at the same time seeking some relief for their insecurities. JD Vance's wife baffles me more, but then lots of women end in abusive relationships and learn to be in their place as an abused submissive partner. Creeps learn how to destroy self-worth and the ability to stand up for oneself, or even just walk away. Who knows what is going on behind closed doors.

I don't like JD Vance, but I don't think people who were abused by their parents as children owe their parents empathy or sympathy. Looking for the reason why your parents were abusive helps you avoid the same pitfalls, but it doesn't excuse them. It doesn't matter if these reasons were drugs or childhood trauma, from your perspective, they ruined your childhood, they hurt you, they were cruel to you, and you wont ever get that foundational time back. If someone else wants to tell the story of why their parents turned out to be monsters, they can. If someone in a similar situation wants to show why their own parents were the way they were with sympathy, they can. But if you're telling the story through the perspective of your childhood self, that self probably wasn't concerned with the social and economic reasons why your parents abused you. Additionally, giving someone empathy doesn't change the reality of who they are and what they're capable of when they're actively in addiction. Some people change and get better, and then you get to know the clean them, but the angry them, the addict them, the abusive them aren't less real. They the very real threat of who they might be if they relapse. And if you've never known your parent to be nice or sober, those are the only real versions of them you know. Some people use the anger from this to do great things before finding their own peace or forgiveness or whatever, and we call them great because they benefitted society. I think just as easily those people become hateful like JD Vance. However, I don't expect either of these unhealed people to humanize their abusers in their childhood retellings.

DGMW, I'm no fan of JD Vance, but from the perspective of a 13 year old, seems like a valid reaction to hate a mom like that. You seem to be requiring a lot of understanding and sympathy from a kid who's only ever known trauma and poverty. JD is a total d bag now, but obviously he's a product of his environment.

Conservatives marry foreign women because they think these women will be more traditional wives. There was a lawyer who wrote a book about how men could reclaim their children from their ex-wives, and his advice was to marry foreign women from traditional societies.

I really don’t understand how JD could’ve had those life experiences and come out of it blaming the people who struggled. The people that he was supposed to love, blaming them for their struggles and not wanting to help any other American in that. Seriously.

My dad took me to see assassination nation in theatres and it was a really uncomfortable experience. I hated it for most the run time but then the ending gave me this strong feeling of catharsis. Because of that I felt the experience was worth it. Like it built to something. I don’t know if I agree with that now. I think I could have gotten that same feeling without some of the worst parts of this movie

The sad story story of Appalachia is that those with talent or intelligence often leave the area ASAP. Leaving is a dream for almost everyone. My whole family did. Logan co. WV has houses priced like cars. That said. Those that are left aren't so talented or intelligent. No offence meant really, im related to a third of the state. I am speaking generally. The state is aware of this, WV has generous college financial aid and dental benefits. I also had a Papaw.

The guy I knew, if at a high class table would conduct himself with the best manners he knew. If someone pointed out he was using the wrong utensil, he would smile and say thank you, and mention where has was raised there was only a fork and a cutting knife, with a chuckle adding I'll catch on. That honesty and humility was greatly admired, and that person went on to a long and fruitful career. The only folks who had a problem with the mans simple roots were, in short, Fake.

Isn't this Vance guy as pathetic a sympathy seeker as the original fake Jesus. Poor me, but look how well I have done. There are millions of real poor people who will never have their story written except as a reference to their class. In JD Vance you have an opportunist and con man like his Leader, willing to say or do or say anything for attention and status. Funny how it really works. I know a person who suffered real poverty and abuse to raise up to the Officer Class. Rather than change his opinion, like the wind, he stood up for what had gotten him where he was, hard work and honesty.
