DIY with Dave

I'm Dave. I have a home and a family and tons of DIY projects. Sometimes I am fixing something that is broken, other times I am building something new, but one thing is for sure, I am always busy. I love to share what I do and share what I learn.

My dad worked for Lennar Homes and I can confirm that this is 100% accurate. He goes on a weekly basis to get lumber. He once got about $1,000 worth of lumber for free. Another time he said they were throwing out an entire staircase of lumber because they needed a temporary staircase to get to the second floor

I'm a framer and nothing sucks more than trying to make your limited supply stretch, big sites with multiple builds might have extra wood.. small builds probably not, extra boards we have account for the inevitable lumber that gets warped and twisted and even still makes use through to backout blocks and useful for trades after the framers finish the main build. Stick to what gets tossed in dumpsters, this advice sucks I hope people don't start to take from our jobsites, my job has enough to worry about and I just want to build people decent houses with decent wood supply..

worst over ordering by 20k on lumber and 10k in cement, then taking the lumber and cement to use on their own projects, I demanded they leave all scrap and unused wood cement other materials as I could use it since I paid for it. This was for my house which they told the bank was 100% completed took the money and ran leaving my house about 73% leaks walls not plumb siding falling off plumbing leaking needed to be redone and electric caught fire 3 times leading me to have to redo the electrical too. 3 years later I'm about 89% complete doing it myself with a friend that is a contractor doing the exterior. House fire brought this about and insurance even screwed us making us paid most of the cost out of pocket with a mortgage even though it should have been fully covered.

This is true. I have worked construction for 25 years. I have seen so much money thrown in a dumpster. Countless projects worth of good material! Bricks wood metal. Flooring everything! Just a while back I was given brand new 46 2×6×8's and 27 2×6×16's and 8 sheets of 3/4 marine grade plywood for free just to haul it off. Its insane how much is wasted every day no matter the current cost of the material. It really shows the mark up of building

Harbor freight is mostly cheap junk. Bought a set of punches figuring what could go wrong with a small piece of steel? Well, used the set once, broke 3 of the 6 punches. Purchased a legit set of punches from Wheeler, no problems since.

Stop by the Model Home with the garage office where the BUILDER BRAND is staffing. Find that guy who is their construction supervisor and tell him your plan, chaos/trash is the target. Sheet god, boxes of supplies, pallets, all off limits. Do the same, as you did with each crew. As you leave offer the crew and then the super you spoke with earlier an inspection. If they want something back, sure thing. Personally, I would do this on video, and email them the thanks for permission, and the video. This way, no setups. I know no one thinks another person is evil, but some guys may be tired of issues and choose you as an example, and call the cops and suddenly not know you, never seen you, never said that.

If its in the bin its free game. Its not worth it storing plywood and lumber or delivering it to the next job. We are constantly tossing full sheets of ply and lumber in the bin, some guys take it home. Completely normal and nobody cares if you take if from the bin

I would not expect single family home building to increase appreciably moving forward. What I see happening is more multifamily construction with alternate building materials. Expect denser communities moving forward with cookie cutter construction using manufactured construction materials versus the basic 2x4 stick builds. As I drive around (and between) the Triangle and Charlotte in NC, I see Texas block construction in the middle of nowhere, away from employment centers in anticipation. Why? It's the future. No new land within beltlines with commute costs and traffic worsening. If you get a startup single family community built, they will be much smaller, likely single level, and on slabs.

while it is a good method. You need to clear it with a foreman or someone in charge, as many construction sites are fenced for security due to our crazy world today from vandals and insurance reasons. but I've done this and its good, just make sure you clear it with the site. the same method works for landscaping material.

I guarantee someone will eventually call the cops If they see you loading wood into a pickup truck from a construction site. You better have a time-stamped body cam video proof when asking permission or you're going to jail because the guy you asked already went home for the day.

There are very few houses being built in a 100-mile radius of my town because the price of lumber is too damn high. I imagine the contractors are very careful about scrapping boards, and the local lumber yards and big box stores take returns for refund or credit.

If you follow this guy's advice you're going to get arrested. Best thing I can say is find a dumpster near construction sites many times the dumpsters have construction material in them. Storage facilities Etc. Many times construction worker illegally dump and the dumpster owners welcome you clearing it..... however you should still get permission

Cabinet shops often lean left over pieces of sheet goods against their dumpster. It is their way of saying: 'Free, put me to use, give me a new home.'
