Hey man, good breakdown. But it seems to me you're forgetting something pretty important, you could just locate a charizard in the box, open that one pack and grade it. Then just sell the remaining 35 packs.

@JMMDD Yep, this is the most worrisome bit. At the same time, this is why people only buy loose packs from a trusted source. There's already price discrepancy between heavy and light packs, but the light packs still have value. It's an interesting thought experiment for sure

Its not about opening the box. People will scan the box to then sell the box as guaranteed hit to raise the value of the box. Then distrust in the market will hit because you wont be able to guarantee someone hasn't scanned the box and found no hits.

I think the market is going to tank because of the overall state of the economy and how in debt everyone is after all that covid "relief" spending by the government at the top of an economic cycle. There aren't anywhere near enough vintage packs out there to ever affect the market meaningfully by themselves since most cards in those packs would grade an 8 or 9 anyway. CT scanning will probably affect Evolving Skies and Team Up the most, and even those sets will be much more heavily affected by the crashing economy in general over the next year. Buying anything vintage now would just be a terrible decision going into what will likely be 70-95% price crashes, but again it'll be because we're in the largest housing and asset bubble of all time while unemployment is skyrocketing.

@@RayQ101except for the fact that booster boxes are a collector item by themselves, and almost always are more valuable sealed, even if you got the best hits in your boxes. Go look at the price of all the sun and moon boxes and then their top 10 cards. You are not making profit scanning them. And then there’s sword and shield. Pull rates are 1/700 pack for the very best hits. Let’s hypothetically say they get the price down to 5$ a pack. You’d have to scan 3500$ worth of packs to find one giratina or one moonbreon. This is a big nothing burger except for loose vintage packs.
