I am very sad to hear of the passing of this pioneer in improving the perception of obesity. Deepest sympathies to her loved ones.

Look at the sectors of the economy which thrive as a result: all the food related sectors, most healthcare sectors, gyms and other weight loss equipment and support sectors, self help literature, self esteem and life coaches, clothing fabric manufacturers, mobility aids and medical lifting equipment, public health, even social media (indirectly)

Capitalism rewards whatever is profitable, not whatever is desirable. Over the long term, the rewards of capitalism trump all other considerations, and the only things we are left with the things that promote economic growth

PEOPLE WHO PLAYED VIDEO GAMES IMMEDIATELY BEFORE EATING CONSUMED ABOUT 163 MORE CALORIES ON AVERAGE, THAN THOSE WHO SAT QUIETLY BEFORE THE MEAL. I LEARNED ABOUT THIS FROM THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NUTRITION. EVEN GAMES YOU ENJOY CAN STRESS YOU OUT, SPURRING YOU TO SEEK COMFORT FOOD, SAYS STUDY AUTHOR JEAN-PHILIPPE CHAPUT, Ph.D.

Some notes and quotes: 3:35 Caution. This conversation can be triggering to those who have a history of trauma. 13:33 ***image of two brains “Extensive research on the biology of stress now shows that toxic stress can have damaging effects on learning and behavior. These are two PET scans showing changes to brain architecture and function.” ***18:10 Origins of Finding “The original landmark study came from a weight loss trial. Dr. Felitti noticed that following weight loss some individuals began to quickly gain back the weight they’d lost. One woman had lost 300 lbs but quickly regained 100. In interviewing her to try and understand what was going on he mistakenly asked what her weight was when she had first had sex instead of his standard question of how old she was at that time. She replied 40 lbs. He thought he must have made a mistake and repeated the question and she again said 40 lbs, started to cry and told him her father had sexually abused her from the age of 4. Felitti then asked all of his patients who had regained their lost weight or some portion of their lost weight and of the 286 patients over half had experienced sexual abuse as a child. Many of them reported feeling threatened by sexual attention as they lost weight so they regained weight to deflect that attention. Felitti then teamed up with Dr. Anda from CDC to then do that bigger ACEs study about those effects on health related to adverse trauma in childhood. (19:33) Mechanisms linking ACEs and obesity: -Food provided temporary relief from anxiety and depression -Weight was like armour - protection from sexual attention (19:58) ***Image ACEs and Obesity: Research Findings -There is a growing body of evidence linking ACEs to both childhood and adult obesity -Clinical and general population samples -Most consistent evidence for a history of sexual abuse but also see evidence for associations with additional ACEs such as emotional and physical abuse -Relationships are dose-response -The evidence suggests that adverse life experiences during childhood play a major role in obesity development…. Potentially linked through emotional health, maladaptive coping responses, stress, inflammation and metabolic disturbances. Childhood sex abuse20:00 Evidence 23:40 What can be done about ACEs? 24:20 ACEs are not Deterministic Mindfulness can help 27:35 Building Resilience Something has happened to you vs Something is wrong with you 30:10 Effects of ACES are not permanent

I WAS WONDERING WHY HEAVY WOMEN LIKE MY MOTHER SEEM TO HAVE EXTREME TROUBLES MANAGING THEIR EMOTIONS? IS IT DIABETES? I APOLOGIZE, I BECAME AUTISTIC DURING A CAR ACCIDENT. NOT THAT FAT WOMEN CARE. IT IS TRUE. AT MY UNCLE MIKE'S FUNERAL MY MOM BECAME SO IRRATE THAT HIS WIFE PAT HAD TO CALM HER DOWN. THE WOMAN JUST LOST HER HUSBAND. WHY DO FAT WOMEN ALWAYS HAVE TO BE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION & DRAMA?? I KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY IN SAYING THIS. BECAUSE IT IS THE TRUTH. I just took care of my mom for two years. I'll never help another heavy woman. They are their own problem. BY HEAVY I MEAN OVER 350. I'm gay and that was not MYSOGINISTIC. I'd rather not spend my time after college taking care of someone my family knew had emotional problems for YEARS. EVEN ROTHS IGA FINDS IT FUNNY.

The cause of my obesity is my small penis. My wife, feeling dissatisfied, distanced our sexual activity: instead of the normal 3 times a week, she took it to only 1 time a month. This produced that the remaining 29 days, my sexual desperation "triggers" an unstoppable anxiety, and I get out of bed at night, and "attack" the refrigerator eating "whatever" without being able to stop. And that's all: guilt of my damn small penis I carry an overweight of more than 20 kg. Do not dismiss this cause, it could happen to someone else.

Great talk by Dr. Michael Lyon on obesity and the private sector. Suggests *not* working n an adversarial way with industry but cooperatively, following an evolutionary process. Proposes that McDonalds and other food providers actually *do* have some healthful products, much more than before. What will determine industry's course is market demand. We need public education and leadership from professionals to spur this demand, to help them gradually make healthier choices, so that business sees the value in serving this need.

That is overly simplistic and judgmental. If it were so easy, we could cure the problem with wishes. We need to understand the mental aspect of eating. Lack of self love and society pressures to remain a victim.

Well, the fact remains that Canadians eat too much & drive too much. Why won't people just eat less, & walk from place to place more? We have to stop making excuses for so much obesity.
