The Screaming hits different when you realize not only is Montressor mocking Fortunado, he's letting him know no one can hear him, and reavealing that he's not mentally stable all at the same time, so creepy, an amazing example of horror without words, jump scare, CGI etc.

I first knew of John Heard for his role as Peter McCallister. Seeing this version of The Cask of Amontillado in a Literature into Film course helped me see just how great of an actor he was.

Where exactly did you get this version, because in the American Masters Poe episode (Terror of the Soul), this short is included, but it's edited. There's talking interviews in between the scenes, the credits are slightly different, some of Heard's narration is missing, and in some cases, parts of scenes are missing (such as when Montressor and Fortunato arrive at the house before entering the catacombs; that whole bit isn't in the documentary). Your version seems to be a complete unedited version that existed outside of the documentary, and I can't find any information about it's release.

Montresor was a psychopath who wanted to take his insicurities and rage out about not being a mason like Furtunado. Furtunado was an rich alcoholic nobleman who Montresor could only tolerate, he hated him. He thought hanging out with Furtunado would help improve his status among nobleman and get his family name back to prominance. It was more about jealousy and ego. He enjoyed the fact of not telling Furtunado why hes being entombed.

I have read the story and seen this short film before and have really enjoyed them. I have just realised that they are going down into a catacombs type of thing. For some reason I always thought they were walking up, like the top of a high castle or something. Anyway, I would not think too harshly of Montressor, as I feel he was wronged very, very badly by Fortunado. He did not carry this out lightly. By the way, the actor who plays Fortunado is Rene Auberjonois who is related to Napoleon.

This is a master class in revenge. Montresor knows that fortunato is an egocentric weak man inherently and instead of just killing him on the street he bids his time. Revenge is a dish best served cold. He gets the absolute best revenge on him. Even deprives him of the right to hear his own screams towards the end...it is merciless. Cold. Long and painful.

I absolutely love the short film! Definitely my favorite short film ever made! I know some people make fun of the screaming at the very end however I actually think that there’s a lot of depth there. The real horror of this film is the psychological torture that both characters are going through. And there’s so many ways to read the story. Love the music and both the actors did an amazing job!
