Teaching With Board Games
Teaching With Board Games
A channel about board games and games in general and how they can be used as educational tools in the classroom. I will be discussing not only how to select games, but what kinds of questions to ask to make a board game a more useful educational tool.

A HUGE shout-out has to go to my Grade 4/5 class this year (you guys know who you are!) It is only through our goal setting projects that we have done this year that this has become reality. I cannot thank you enough!
My intro theme song music is "Home's No Place To Be" by Jake Gordon.

There were a couple of important errors in the battle example. The unit of Lesser Warbeasts wasn’t battered, it only had to retreat in good order after tying with the elite humans. Also, assuming it was battered, on the next turn when it failed to rally but didn’t dissolve, it should have lost another strength point and retreated another full move.
Do you think there is the slightest chance, that someday you may get your hands on Doom of the Eldar boardgame? Its the only boardgame that can top your monumental playthrough of the Advanced Space Crusade ! Great work!
How do you upgrade hotels? Draw a card?
The mind slaves are essentially the direct link to the previously published Space Crusade by Milton Bradley. It enabled those who owned that game to incorporate the alien models into the “advanced” version of Space Crusade. But of course, it is also an incentive for players to buy more models 😊
I have watched your two reviews of Warhammer alliance and wondering if you have a recommendation for what version of the game could be good for students to play. Kill team? War cry? Or some mod of some version of the game? I’m trying to put together a After-school club for grades 5 to 8.
Very cool, simple game. Did the math and found the optimal strategy is to roll two dice, and if the sum is less than 7, roll one more time. It seems the odds of getting a double from the fourth roll is too high to be worth it.
Thank you for this great intro. How can I explain this to parents and administrators who are not so excited about the war aspect of the whole thing?
I appreciate what you are doing. I have gotten some really good ideas from your reviews.
I learned Rummikub in the Hospital a couple years ago and haven't stopped playing it's fun and very addictive...
HEY its me yarden I'm your 1# fan
lol immortalized
Looks fun
I was just having a discussion with my friend who has a boy looking to go to college. I played Candy Land with him once when he was five. He wasn't following the rules, and I jokingly said, "Hey, no cheating!" He burst into tears. Whoops. What is your opinion on how to impress the importance of rules?
Playing games is entering a social contract with the other players. So in a game with my granddaughter and myself I know she sometimes cheats, and sometimes I let her, as the focus is on having fun. But she has to understand too, that not everyone is going to be as forgiving as Papa and so she needs to know that cheating is (sometimes) not okay,
@@TheBoardGameTeacher I teach HS PE. Knowing the importance of rules is important. Related to this is honesty. Although it's not rampant, competitive kids sometimes cheat under pressure. I've successfully addressed it from time to time, but it's hard to correct at that age.
One, two, three, four. I need more!
I hope to see more from this channel. I ran a game club in my HS in the Bronx for several years. I always thought that it would enhance education, but I always had such a hard time getting the kids who needed it to come to the club.
Thank you for your support. More is coming, I have resolved now to truly get back to it. Great to hear that you are running the game club at your high school and while you are not reaching the ones you were hoping to, don't give up! We are not always going to be able to help those that we aim to, but sometimes we make the difference, without realizing. Trying to convince high school students to join a board game club can be a tough sell, particularly if they do not have a background of games. Not sure if your kids did or not, but just speaking from my own personal experiences. If you can find a way to incorporate games in the classroom, then this might be a way to change some of their opinions about boardgames, or at least make their learning more engaging!
@@TheBoardGameTeacher I had to give up the club due to low attendance. I'm about to retire anyway. I intend to do a YT channel on recreation in general, so I'll still dabble in the topic a little. I'm also going to look into volunteering at my library. I hope to introduce seniors and juniors to games of various kinds.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MR Tw just sub to ur KZread Chanel I still can't find my doubting keep up the work
It's me Aayan I can't find my doutang
Really enjoyed this series, will you do another one but with the imperial guard? I'd love to see how their Officers rule affects the game
I could definitely look into that. Where can I find the rules for the Imperial Guard?
@@TheBoardGameTeacher they were in White Dwarf #132 (UK) or #131 (US) though I found a pdf scan on Scribd.

In adding the score on Nab-It does a word that is only a single layer (has never been Nabed) count as a point for the player who played it?
Hi Craig, tell us how tests went :) I was wondering if you had any teaching materials to share on how to integrate games more into teaching (directed at teachers & facilitators) to get started more easily
Hello! Can you please clarify what you mean by the tests? As for your other question, I will give that some thought and prepare some ideas on how teachers can begin with game integration into their classrooms/learning environments.
@@TheBoardGameTeacher my bad - I meant how trying out all those games went that you showed in the video (Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle, etc). Likely tripped over auto-correct.
Would be a decent video without the dogs. They really spoil it
Sorry you think so. But if you want, you can send me the original plastic scouts and I will gladly replace the dogs!
What is whistling in the back ground?!?! So distracting. Cant even watch
$50 on amazon or $250 from local shop
This is a very engaging game for students. When I tried it with 7th graders, the kids got extremely into it.
Love this game in the classroom and as a party game. One of my favs!
Hello Craig, I’m perudo fanatic and you are in my latest vid. Sorry 😂. Btw you have credit don’t worry
Good tutorial! Can investigators retrace their steps during their move by passing through one or more spaces even more than once?
Yes. There is no limitation on the investigator movement.
Hello, Do you know any app similar to Quizlet ? My board has blocked Quizlet and I am looking for an easy app that allows me to import my quizlet sets. I am a language teacher. Thank you:)
When you play a Warp card and move an opponent's piece, is your turn over, or can you still also play one of your own pieces after that?
That is your turn. You play one card on your turn.
Wow! The superhero game environment has changed significantly, today: Marvel United, Marvel Champions, Marvel Zombicide, DCeased, ... ? Still a handy learning tool. I have used your video twice, now. Thank you.
Glad it is so useful to you! I do love this game so much.
Did you print the biolab objectives at 100% size, or did you need to reduce them to be the 'normal' size?
It's been a a while now, but believe I just did them at 100%. They were designed for this purpose, so honestly, would be surprised if adjustments were needed.
@@TheBoardGameTeacher I figured it out the hard way! There are two sizes it comes in (so no need to manually tinker with sizing). For other peoples benefit......print the smaller scale option that comes with the purchase ('scaled for spacehulk').
Great video. Is the rules for magic and do they work?
There are rules for magic, although I have never tried them.
I'm a PE teacher in NYC that hosts a game club in a high school. I think that almost any game has a lesson it. Something as simple as Zombie Dice is an introduction to probability. Codenames appears to touch only on language, but it easily branches out into so many other areas like geography, science, culture, music, and the list goes on. Just mastering a game builds confidence. I just made a post on The Discriminating Gamer's last video about combining his passion for history with games. He said that he tries with his students at the college level, but he doesn't cover it on KZread. To be honest with you, there isn't a ton of interest/money in education, but I do think it's a worthwhile effort. I'm glad that your channel exists.
Thank you. I appreciate your support. I totally agree that any game is going to have some kind of educational component to it. And while there may not be a lot of money or support for education, it is something that I am am passionate about, so this is why I do what I do. Glad that there are people like you who share a similar interest and appreciate my work.
hi ! i got a question : minute 25.40-ish..the Genestealer try to kill the Marine but got killed by reaction. My question is - I do remember that EVERY marine that SEE something or is close to 6 squares from a fight can do a reaction...am I right?
I believe you are correct, yes. If I made a mistake, then I attribute that to (a) my lack of experience with the game and (b) the difficulty in trying to play and film at the same time!
No apologies needed. Why not say, I'm going on holidays, there will be no videos for x# weeks.
Well good thing that I did not say how many weeks, as it has been longer than expected. :P
Its been 30 years since i played this. I vaguely remember a bunch of random events which can have negative effects on the marines, like parts of the living ship itself attacking random marines. When do they come into play?
There are events that happen based on the cards from the marine exploration.
Red Joker has the WORST rulesbooks to some of the best games out there. You think Guradians is bad (which it definitely is) wait till u see the OKKO rulebook! Horrendous
I cannot disagree. I tell people often that this is the worst rulebook I have ever read, but once you get past it it is a great game.
Thanks for this extensive playthrough. Recall, having enjoyed Space Crusade a lot back in the day. This seems to be a worthy next step and a new edition would be great!
Thanks for the feedback. I am glad you enjoyed the video.

GOD-BLESS this video! Rules🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Really enjoyed this video. A game I always wanted to play but never got the chance.
Awesome play through. Thanks for documenting it. Makes me want to reacquire a set as well.
The grabber slasher has a picture in the book somewhere. It's got a big claw on it's forehead, and a stabby knife on it's belly. They are infiltrator assassins. It's probably too slow to be a hormagaunt but it's been a real long time since I owned the rulebook. I suppose the niche may have been occupied by lictors over time. The names of the tyranids (termagants, carnivors, etc) change with the release of the 1st army book. I think it was 3rd edition. 2nd edition was the first appearance of tyranids (a white dwarf army list) and had mind slaves. Choose any unit that exists to add to your army. Too funny.
I've never seen this being played. Ggreat stuff!
Neither had I (on KZread). One of the reasons I wanted to do this!
Thank you for your analysis
oh m gee
Can't Stop is great for this as well.
Thanks for the advice, I will check that one out
