    I find that the angle guide produces an uneven apex on the blade. I’ve upgraded to a TSProf Kadet and now my results are phenomenal. I’ll keep the DMT plates for freehand touch ups in the field.

  • @Gator-357

    If you take care of your stones properly, all you need is some water and a toothbrush to keep it clean. If you have to take a wire brush to it, you need to question your technique or do regular cleaning. There is no reason it should get caked up to that point. Unless you just have money to throw away. I can't believe a company rep actually suggested using a paper towel to clean with. That is a horrible idea and only serves to further clog the stone. If plain water doesn't work, a toothbrush or similar is all you need. The eraser is also a bad idea unless you are cleaning a ceramic stone or stick.

    Seems if you push and pull the gouge the perfect radius will be in the middle and you will be rubbing the edge back and forth between too flat a radius and too tight. Can you put the gouge on the exact right radius and twist it clockwise and ccw? For compound curve hook tools what sharpening product/s do you recommend?

    I have a 95 MICRON Dia-Flat Lapping Plate. After flattening 3 stones ( Norton India stone, Norton soft Arkansa stone, and Makita 1200 water stone) on both sides, under running water, I notice that the Dia-Flat Lapping Plate is rougher on the ends compared to the middle section. I guess I did not run the stones right off the ends of the Dia-Flat Lapping Plate. The instructions said that roughness would decline with usage, so I am not concerned about that, but when I place a straight edge across the Dia-Flat Lapping Plate, I can see light in the middle because the rough ends are higher, having not yet been worn down. So my concern is that the when flattening another stone, I do not have a flat Dia-Flat Lapping Plate and therefore will not get a flat stone. I am thinking of placing a piece of wet/dry 320 grit paper on a precision granite block and rubbing the Dia-Flat Lapping Plate on the grit paper, with water, to bring the Dia-Flat Lapping Plate high rough points down even with the middle area. What do you think of that ? Is there a better way ?

    Did you find a solution for flattening the diasharp?

  • @steven.woodward
    @steven.woodward8 ай бұрын

    @@vincentjames1995 I gave up on the DMT Dia-Flat Lapping Plate. Found I could get stones flatter with wet-dry sandpaper ( 180 to 220 grit ) on granite block ( HHIP 4401-0011 ) than with a DMT Dia-Flat Lapping Plate. I had considered the paper on granite method to be inferior to a diamond plate with certified flattens spec of 0.0005" . Then I got a straight edge and discovered I could do much better with sandpaper. Maybe my technique on diamond plate was not good. The nice thing with sandpaper is the the stone never has to go off the edge of sandpaper so perhaps this makes technique is not so important with sandpaper. Spray water on both sides of wet-dry sandpaper The wet dry paper can be rinsed off and hung to dry for another use. Picked up an economical straight edge, Kinex 1061-05-300. Hardened stainless steel with a knife edge. It is a quick way to check stone flatness by viewing with a light behind. Previously I was using the standard method of pencil lines on stone and flattening until they disappear. Benefit of checking with a straight edge is that it is more accurate and I can see when stones need flattening, so am not flattening them as often.

DO NOT buy this worthless junk. what’s the statistical probability of THREE of them being defective? you wasted my time, my money, and i WILL NEVER stop telling people that this stuff is junk. for the record, these worthless stones caused me untold hours of frustration when i started woodworking, i thought i was doing something wrong, i kept at it because i knew no better. it felt like i’d never accomplish anything, i gave up for years. someone gave me a natural stone and it worked perfectly. it wasn’t me, it was your garbage product. i hate you and hope your business fails and you starve to death.

    Truly lousy instructions. You need to go step by step. The Adjustable Guide Rods have notches for the different angles but where do the notches index? You start with the Rods already in place for 20 degrees. You should start with them loose and carefully show them installed and what lines up with what. The written instructions that come with the kit about tightening and backing off pressure really are maddening.

  • @RealFunFuneral976

    No the red is a 600 grit. You need to hit the 1200 green and then at least a 3000 to 8000 grit, plus a strop. In essence the 600 would be 5 to 10 x's less the sharpening power a cut throat blade would need for a proper edge.
