another thing to save you time. install flatpak. after doing that type in yay -S bauh. this will install the bauh package manager. reboot the system and open bauh and just type in what you want and it will find it for you and install it without terminal. google, steam, obs what ever you want and with flatpak in there you can get it easy with no hastle

I think the choice comes down to what you're familiar and comfortable with, I began my professional IT career on OpenVMS, wrote some complex software and maintained their pool of Vaxes and later a combination of those and Alphas for many years, but back then you couldn't take OpenVMS home with you, it only ran on expensive DEC hardware. Then 25 years ago I moved to a Unix house, developing on HP-UX and supporting customers on Solaris, Sequent and later AIX and absolutely hated it initially, especially the vi editor, but over time you get used to and appreciate it, plus you could run Linux at home and since then it's all I use, absolutely love it. Then I heard that OpenVMS had been ported to Intel, got myself a free community license, spun it up on a VM and absolutely hated it, completely lost, like, why did I ever like this? I think most Windows users don't think much about the OS but there are those who understand and know their way around it and for those users they'll be as content and happy as most Linux / Unix users, no need to consider anything else. They all help you to do what you bought your computer for, develop and run programs, choose the one you like and learn how to get the best out of it but above all, be happy !!

Did you also run "grub-mkconfig -o <path to grub.cfg on UEFI partition>" after making changes to the default grub configuration? That could've have fixed it but I don't use Hyper-V so I'm not sure if that would've worked in the first place. Also in KVM (a Linux Hypervisor) sshing into a Linux or FreeBSD vm via NAT works out of the box.

Those are all VM display issues. Change the virtual display adapter in your Hypervisor, not from within the virtual machine itself. In VirtualBox set it to "VMSVGA" (and increase the allocated vram), though I'm not sure on your specific case. None of this would be an issue on a real bare metal install. Also note the Kdenlive, OBS, Discord, complaints that people make lately, usually boil down to Flatpaks. Install real system packages (.deb, etc.) when possible.

Hyper-V. I don’t think you’re going to be able to fix hyper-v from within the VM.

The most unexpected thing is that you are using Hyper-V. I have never been able to obtain satisfactory results. Of course, I don't even expect it to perform as well as KVM, but anything acceptable like VirtualBox.

Well, watching this closely for some time, all of the unwanted hits on my SSH port are worms, botnets...automated attacks. These drop to zero when I move ssh to a non-standard port. Security through obscurity by itself is a bad idea -- if someone does it have it out for your server, they'll just nmap you and find the port. But the reality is, most people do not have it out for you specifically. Most things are searching for any vulnerable servers they can find. If you get a lot of unwanted hits on a non-standard port, you can be almost certain there's an actual human being up to no good, so it's much easier to separate noise from signal in this sense: there's not much benefit to scripting automated attacks on non-standard ports. Too little payoff. Thus, anyone hammering you on non-standard ports is almost certainly a human. One thing I've done with *telnet*, is to set up netcat (the older version which can pass off incoming connections to a script), and then pass to a Perl script which prints a login and password prompt, then simulates a # or $ prompt depending on the provided username. From there I can write what the "logged in" (not really) user does. And it's all the same thing -- it's all automated connections followed by an attempt to access a compromised busybox binary; likely some botnet. The same is likely true for ssh connections.

This wasn't a quick look, let alone a review. You were actually "using" the installed system for five minutes out of a nine-minute video. And I use the term "using" loosely--you barely did more than look at the desktop, click around a few times, attempt to install Chrome, and check KDE's system information. You really set the entire tone for this "review" at only about two minutes and 40 seconds in when you said, "Wonder how long this will take. Hopefully it won't be too long, I want to go to bed." My response to that: Just go to bed. Unsubscribed.

Hi Gary, I've tried it all: Windows, macOS, countless Linux distros, and now I'm starting to explore FreeBSD. I use Arch with Xfce, and thanks to the pacman package manager and the AUR community repositories, I don't need to use flatpak or snap. I have all the software I want and more than I could ever use. I haven't tried ports yet, but I imagine it must be somewhat similar to the AUR. Thanks to your tutorials, I was able to install FreeBSD with Plasma, something I wouldn't have managed otherwise. All the best!

MacOS is the brother of Linux, both were born from Unix. And since Android is a distro of Linux, that means iPhones’ and Samsung phones’ softwares are distantly related. Interesting.

Helly, Gary. I hope you and your viewers will forgive, perhaps even enjoy, a small foray into epistemology. When you say that as a system administrator, what you are good at is knowing how to look things up, rather than "having knowledge", you remind me of something the great astronomer Carl Sagan said in one of his "billions and billions" of books. He suggested that even more important to the human evolutionary development than the opposable thumb was our capacity for extrasomatic knowledge, or outside the body knowledge. By this he meant we almost uniquely have the ability to transmit knowledge not only directly, person to younger (or any age) person, but to record this knowledge so it reposes outside our own bodies, and thus, is future accessible to anyone. Therefore, each generation need not reinvent or rediscover the knowledge, data, and lore of the previous. Rather, they may access it via these extrasomatic means, be they libraries, universities, books, and now, databases and digital knowledge and search engines. Therefore, while you modestly say you only know how to access data, in fact, Professor Sagan would tell you that this means you are at the apex of human evolutionary powers, and it is that very ability which makes you an advanced thinker, and valuable contributor to our society's knowledge and lore.

I don’t understand why people can’t grasp that Linux is just a kernel and the BSD decedents are just their own operating systems. It’s literally the reason why we have hundreds of distros today! People took the Linux kernel and built their own OS around it. BSDs don’t really do that (sure you have somethings like GhostBSD being based off of FreeBSD).
