Great achievement getting so many fry, even if you had to remove the pipes. In the lake, calvus spawn in very narrow, tight crevices amongst piles of rocks and even in some of the larger snail shells. Once the fry leave the cave they literally just swim a few inches "around the corner " into the nearest crevices, thereby avoiding predation by any large fish, but mainly the parents who are the immediate threat. To prevent the male from cannibalising the fry, perhaps you might consider adding some additional cover to act as refugia into which the youngsters could retreat? Some small snail shells would do the job. Not 100% guarantee but such a measure would reduce your losses.

Fun, this is a blast from the past. I worked out that albinism was the dominant allele over wild type in kribs over 40 years ago as a young teen for a science fair project. This video brings me back to my youthful enjoyment of kribs.

I've had 7 females and 3 males (now only 1 male, I guess he killed the other two off?) in a 10 gallon planted tank with spawning mops and I've only gotten one baby to grow - do the adults and juveniles eat the eggs??? I assumed in a species only tank this wouldn't be an issue - plus I feed daphnia and live baby brine (or frozen) shrimp all the time

Very nice. I always keep my various Silver Dollars with larger cichlids. Great dither fish. They live very long life.. 17 y old and I had to pass to someone cause I was moving. All these 17 y still breeding constantly , no babies cause it was a community tank. My observation also, the male Silver dollar have something similar to little hook at the bottom of it anal fin and also the spots in Spotted Silver dollars mostly disappearing when fish reach 4 inch or so.. My largest female reached around 8" being older then 15 y old. Fish grew all its life

Congratulations on your success with these beautiful fish! I wonder at what age would the juveniles no longer predate on the fry and convert to a more herbivorous diet?

Definitely one of my favorite fish all time. Kept and bred them many times. Many different color morphs, some almost impossible to breed, others pretty easy. The adults don´t eat their own fry, but older fry eats the small ones. You get a 50/50 sex ratio at 24 degrees Celcius, over/under this gives more of one sex (I don´t remember which sex though). Great fish!

@@HappyOne2017 it takes about a week for the eggs to hatch. The frys are among the smallest I have seen for a freshwater fish, they are very difficult to spot. Good luck!
