Years ago there was a plan to restore/display 2 of these at a small rail museum in Otsego County, NY. I believe they are rusting on an overgrown siding off of Route 7 in Cooperstown Junction, NY (just NorthEast of Colliersville, and Oneonta. If you look on Google Earth, 42degrees-29’41” N and 74degrees-57’55”W, you can just make out one of the hulks under the trees. There is some rolling stock there as well.
👍
Detroit And Mackinac/LAKE STATE had an ex L.I. C420, no. 976 which was scrapped due to fire damage.
Ridin' on the GG1 locomotive/Penn Central Monday mornin' rail/15 cars and 150 restless riders/3 conductors and 25 sacks of mail/All along the westbound odessey/The train pulls out of Grand Central and rolls along past NYC buildings and fields (OK, I'm no Steve Goodman)
The electrical components (in particular, the transformers) of the GG1 used PCB's, which are now banned, so the components would need a lot of design and construction to replace, more than museums could afford. They are not likely to ever ride the rails again.
Thank you for the video on the Allegheny (2-6-6-6) as it is my favorite locomotive and as you said, railfans of the Allegheny can dream of a restoration or possibly a brand new Allegheny if one of the remaining steam Loco builders would build it and if there was money to build it.
The First GP7 ever made is CNW 1518, Built in October 1949
Fairbanks Morse’s Erie Built & C-Liner locomotives look great, and if I ever do HO model trains, I will have Fairbanks Morse Cab Units.
I know Tyco had some C-liners, maybe Life Like as well. I’d do a little bit of research
PRR tested the E33's but the interfered with the Pennsy's Trainphone. They were sold to the New Haven instead. When PC was forced to take over the NH, they became part of their electric fleet. They used mercury Ignitron tubes ( not ignition ) to convet the AC to DC. Conrail investigated replacing their electric fleet, and tested 2 locomotives ( the GM6C and GM10B), but decided to shift as much traffic as possible off of Amtrak lines, as well as taking down the wire or abandoning the other electrified portions.
Wondeful locomotive ❤
The original experimental unit was designed to have 8 750HP 408 series engines. Each one was self contained with integral cooling system and main generator. The power pac ( my term) could be lifted out and replaced quickly in case of a problem( Way ahead of it's time). Due to restrictions, only 4 were installed. It was tested on the B&O between Philly and Elsmere Jct, De. The post-war version used 2 1500HP 608SC prime movers in place of the 408's. Intended as single units, PRR ordered theirs as Semi-permanently coupled pairs. PRR derated them to 2500HP each ( 5000HP per pair) after they moved them to freight then finally helper service. Pennsy did experience traction motors overheating problems in helper service out of Altoona on the Horseshoe Curve. In the early 1950's, NdeM sent theirs back to Eddystone, where they were upgraded with 608A prime movers, but keeping their 1500HP rating.
I love old locomotives❤❤❤ SD 7 is wondeful.
That locomotive so strange
Are there any locomotives that can run of patographs or Diesel powered electric? It would seem like a better solution than the battery electric locomotives you hear about.
Battery electric is fake technology. They simply cannot match overhead line electrification.
Awesome i wish some one would do one on the E-33 virginian,,,,
Already done my friend. Check out my video on the EL-C. Posted back in 2021 :)
Too bad the railroads of the Americas (it's not just the US and not even just North America) almost all de-electrify whenever they can. Unfortunately this was not one of the few exceptions. One nit: Early in the video you mention rectifier technology, but the EL-2C locomotives used motor-generators, as you correctly state a bit before 2 minutes.
Interesting observation. Thx for watching :)
Super. I love all six of the different C-Liners, four or five axle. 💙T.E.N.
Do the sd40-2
Better add that to the que my friend. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching.
They have one at the Henry ford museum!
You do realize there's only one M1 Mountain type left right only one was saved one of the tenders were also say that it's not being used for the T1 project
Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt both owned SD45T-2's alongside the SD40T-2's as mentioned. The 20-645E7's in the SD45T-2's versus the 16-645E3's in the SD40T-2's always broke crankshafts. The same problem existed on the SD45's,SD45-2's,FP45's/F45's,SDP45's,and SD45M's. This is why both railroads were rebuilding the units as SD45T-2R's just like the SD45's that became SD45R's with 16-645E3's. After the merge most of the rebuilt tunnel motors were redesignated as SD40T-2's on Union Pacific's roster. In 2008 during the economy crash Union Pacific sold large fleets of the SD45T-2R's among other units but certain SD40T-2's were also involved. The two largest aquires of tunnel motors post merge were KCS and DMIR. The tunnel motors actually remain in class one usage under Canadian National with DMIR reporting marks and most of the units have been rebuilt as SD40T-3's.
I have 2 Fairbanks-Morse models in HO scale. One is a FM 12-44 and the other is a FM 15-44 all in the Central of Georgia livery. Cheers from eastern TN
More engines of 🇦🇺
I’ll see what I can do
Iron Horse… love these! Keep ‘em coming❤👍🏻🚂😅
You forgot to mention FCA and ALL of Brasil, many were shipped with C30-7s.
All of BN, UP, SCL, and conrails as wells alot from mexico they were shipped to Brasil. There was only about 12 built for brasil ....to this day you can still see a BN C30-7 in Brasil.
Cewl Episode
A long time ago the H8 at the B&O museum was displayed outside. You could really get a good look at her. Now it's much harder to see the scale of the engine. The one in Dearborn is in really great shape - always stored indoors after it was retired.
I believe most, if not all of the SD45's still operating on regionals, have had their V-20's replaced with V-16's making them (internally) just another SD-40. Nothin wrong with that.
I plan to make an episode of the GE B40-8W for my series, Engines of Santa Fe
Cool! Do you have any other locomotives planned for this? You could cover their 2-10-10-2 steam engine.
@ironhorsehistorian9871 I might consider doing that, but we'll see
Ten thousand tons tractive effort ! I don't think so ? That would make these behemoths the most powerful locomotives ever built
You'd think No. 4403 would be preserved for pulling a presidential train. This will come from some personal preference as even though the later GS Classes are more appealing with the streamlining, I still like the look of the earlier classes.
It’s always sad when a steam locomotive class goes extinct, I’m just glad we have photos and models at least
Finally these great locomotives have some recognition!
Thanks for watching and I’ll be sure to talk about more members of the GS Class in future video essays. Have a good day my friend.
Nice video!
Thanks!
I would've loved to see a GS-1 in preservation
Nelson British Columbia there is one thereAa
I've Got A Book About The C&O 2-6-6-6 H8 Allegheny A Retrospective OF The Locomotive I Love The Rare Classic Black And White Pictures OF Them IN Action ON The C&O Untill Late 1956
Im going to be honest that the RF 16 could never be mistaken for anything else. There are no other sharknoses
I lived in northern California during the 70's and 80's a teen and twenty something. I first saw the tunnel motors crossing the causeway between Davis and Sacramento. The SD40T-2 has always been a favorite of mine.
The origional spec. was for 8 750HP V-8 diesel engines. Just imagine the maint. head-aches that would cause!
It would be 65 miles per hour for lacking AC
Great engines ,shame that they were a toxic nightmare.
I loved seeing some PAs coming into the local Rail Yard in the early 70s and seeing GG1s at another yard
In the field the 4935 was nicknamed "Black Jack" because the digits added together = 21. There was another motor prior to the AEM-7, it was GE's E60CP numbered in the 900 series which were a 6 axle electric freight motor (if I recall correctly, a power plant out in Colorado used them to move their coal cars). Amtrak engineers had said the E60CP "bounced them all over the place" inside the cab, it wasn't a very nice ride. It was determined they were not to exceed a maximum speed of 80mph. Later, the wheel trucks were changed allowing for a maximum speed of 90mph & were re-numbered in the 600's when the new style wheel trucks were installed.
Howdy! I'm Sam!
I just got a Fairbanks-Morse H12-44 brass diesel engine (HO scale) in the Central of Georgia livery. Am waiting on a F-M H15-44 Atlas in the same livery. Cheers from eastern TN
The PRIME MOVER IN THE SD45 IS A 645E3, 20CYCLINDER TWO CYCLE ENGINE EQUIPPED WITH AN AR10GENERATOR AND THEY WEIGHED IN AT 400,900LBS, A 4000 GALLON FUEL TANK AND A TOP SPEED OF 65MPH, THEY ARE CAPABLE OF SPEEDS OF 106 MPH! THEY HAVE A GEAR RATIO OF 62:15. THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A PRIME MOVER THAT HAD 4,500HP. AND THIUGH THEY HAD CRANKSHAFT ISSUES, THEY WERE NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO FIX. MANY OF THEM HAD REINFORCED CRANKSHAFTS THAT PROVED TO BE VERY RELIABLE. AND THEY WENT ON TO BECOME THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S LOCOMOTIVE OF CHIICE FOR MOUNTAINOUS TERRITORY. THEY HAD A DISTINCTIVE SOUND THAT WAS UNLIKE ANY OTHER LOCOMOTIVE OF THE DAY. THE THREE NEWER LOCOMOTIVES THAT ACTUALLY SOUND LIKE THE SD45,IS THE GP39-2,THE SD70ACE, AND THE SD80MAC,AN ADDITIONAL LOCOMOTIVE THAT ALSO SOUNDED LIKE THIS WAS THE SD90MAC. THE SD 45 WAS A LOCOMOTIVE THAT COULD DRAG LIKE A MULE, AND RUN LIKE THE WIND! SHE PROVED HERSELF TIME AFTER TIME. SOME OF THEM ARE STILL RUNNING ON SOME CLASS 2S AND MANY REGIONAL AND SHORTLINES . SOMEWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES,THE SD45IS STILL RUNNING AND HAULING TRAINS THE WAY THEY WERE DESIGNED TO DO.
Say what you want about thisthe sd45. She had her problems, but she seeved the railroads faithfully for many years! Her distinctive bidy style can still be seen TODAY, as many of her sisters wewe rebuilt into sd40ms and dash two's. She and her sisters may be gone, but her flared radiators carbidy is still with us to this day! In ho scale,i have a total of19 of them in my collection. I love them , im keeping them on my roster. LONG LIVE THE KING OF THE ROAD; THE SD45!
I really LOVED the 7’s and 9’s growing up. Especially on the Southern.
Southern railway own PA3 and Dl109
