    Ed, Mark, and John; I turned a Holly blank for a Slim-Line pen and it was so bland I decided to try to color the wood. I used a Neon Yellow highlighter and planned to coat it with CA. As soon as the CA touched the colored blank the bright yellow turned a Cherry Red color. It turned out awesome. A big surprise. I can't explain why this happened, I'm guessing some chemical reaction.

    I thought you were going to cut it the ring in the vise, that you didn't made me think about "why not?" Aside from simplicity, there is the advantage that snap-cracking the ring results in a glue joint that is unlikely to be a STRAIGHT line. Straight lines draw the eye more than irregular lines.

    Excellent tutorial! I've made a few custom finials, pretty much the same method. My favorite is with wood blanks, using the matching cutoff so the grain flows over the top of the pen. I look forward to the center band video. Take care!

    Hi John, any reason you used CA instead of UV resin? That final shot OMG is that stunning. Nice work thanks for the ideas.

    It’s just a personal preference. I’m better at not leaving small air bubbles in there with the fill and finish Gluboost. I’ve used some UV resins with mixed results. I wouldn’t recommend using just any CA. Many of them get too brittle and crack with time or use. The full and finish Gluboost line is made to be a finish and is flexible so it doesn’t crack.

    What’s the cost of each blank resin, powder, dye?

  • @exoticsshortvids5040
    @exoticsshortvids5040Ай бұрын

    That is a very difficult question to answer! Alumilite resin comes in 8 ounces to 5 gallon sizes--prices are very different based on the amount you purchase!! Buying 10 gallons is $800.00 or about 50 cents per ounce, (plus freight) 32 ounces is $44 (plus freight) or $1.40 per ounce. A normal square is about 3 ounces, so you can figure out your cost based on the amount you are willing to purchase. Dye and micah are about 25 cents. Then there is waste!!! Even John, who has been casting for over a decade, has some "pours" that don't turn out. Using the vertical casting system will reduce the amount per blank by about 25% Hope this gives you an idea of the answer to your question---Ed

    When you make the jig, the 31/64" hole has to be deeper than the height of the "finial piece" (cap). You may want to drill through if you are using wood, that way you can press it out from the open side, if it gets stuck in the hole. FWIW-Ed

    Looks more like a Sierra kit to me.

  • @exoticsshortvids5040
    @exoticsshortvids50405 ай бұрын

    The diamond knurl is made exclusively for Exotic Blanks and it is very similar to the sierra. Tubes are the same size. However, the finial resembles the elegant series, but the back end screws on so it can conveniently be replaced with a stylus version (which is also available). Additionally, the "nib" of the pen unscrews to allow the user to change the refill without exposing the transmission--a notable design improvement over the original. Finally, the "centerband" ornamentation is much deeper carved and the nose is gunmetal, so it is very durable--not likely to scratch and peel. Thanks for watching!! Try a Diamond Knurl Ballpoint, you will see the difference for yourself! Ed

    Hi Ed, Is that a real piece of rebar? How in the world did you drill that? Even drilled out, isn't it heavy to write with? I t certainly does look nice.

  • @exoticsshortvids5040
    @exoticsshortvids50405 ай бұрын

    Yes, it is real rebar. We tried dozens of times to drill pieces and NO, we did not succeed. One of our customers found a job shop that can drill the rebar--we are buying from him. I will weigh the pen, my impression is that it is not too heavy (the remaining steel is pretty thin). It is a cool looking pen!!

    Yes it is a cool looking pen. I figured it must be thin if you're suggesting to paint the brass tube. That's just amazing. Rebar. I may actually have to order 1 ea. of these and see how they sell. If nothing else, I'll have some pretty cool looking pens. @@exoticsshortvids5040

    Ed, that is a very nice turned blank. You explained how you didn’t true the ends before turning, instead waited until you were almost finished. That seems like a good idea now that I babe seen you do it. Easier to keep from chipping the ends beyond repair. Thanks for another great video.

    Nice olive wood ring. Been making rings for a while now. If you decide to make more, then the only immediate advice I have would be using a carbide tool that’s not curved. I use the square bits on mine, so I don’t have to worry about a CA glue gap between the wood n steel. Still a damn good job since it’s your third ring.

    I use a home-made three wheel buffing system, using tripoli, white diamond, then a wheel with nothing on it to remove any dust. As you can see, it results in a high shine--quickly!

    Dawn did stained glass, as you know. Any stained glass wholesaler also sells front surface mirror. You cut it to the size you want with a glass "cutter". Actually, you score the mirror and then break it, hopefully along the score line.

    For ease of viewing, the turning of the egg starts the video, sanding is at 6:33, the finish is GluBoost-that process starts at 8:17 and the assembly of the kaleidoscope begins at about 12:55.
