    2:00 min to understand Tyson you need to see "20. Richard Dawkins - Beyond Belief 2006" Dawkin's comments were biting and they were beautifully eloquent, summoned up as: "“Roughgarden, the science doesn’t care about your feelings". Dawkins closing comment here nails it again! It is precisely what needs to be said. In hindsight, Tyson is heading down the road of intellectual appeasement. He comes out of this looking bad - really bad, given his desire for compromise and falling prey to "sensitivity" and "being nice", In 2006, this is preciously the weakness the likes of Roughgarden seek to exploit - intellectual appeasement. This is what is responsible for the deplorable state of the sciences in 2024. Roughgarden has succeeded in undermining biological realities - manipulated people and the mutilation of children has become the result. With that, Roughgarden is very happy.

  • @markrussell3428
    @markrussell34282 ай бұрын

    So awesome to look back at Roughgarden from 2024. This person just wants everyone to be nice and ignore reality so a distorted biological perspective can take hold and the actual science is explained away. The real sadistic motives of 2006 have become all the more clear today, notice how Roughgarden even slips in "power" as the central tenants to the thesis. Another "mystical" dimension that goes along with using theology to explain things away. There is no social conflict here - its a confused scientist that is establishing a world view that grooms and confuses children. Dawkins in his own poetic manner is essentially saying "I don't care about your feelings or moral imperatives". IF more scientists actually put facts and the best scientific truth forward the world would be in a better place and the U.S. sex reassignment surgery market size wouldn't have ballooned to an estimated USD 2.1 billion in 2022.

  • @markrussell3428
    @markrussell34282 ай бұрын

    This is a pathetic attempt by Roughgarden to feel validated and will go so far as to use faith as an instrument. Roughgarden wants to make nice and in so doing doesn't give a crap about the collateral damage being done to children.

    Why does Richard Dawkins insist the priest who reported seeing nothing when wearing the Persinger helmet was lying when he himself says he saw nothing? Did you miss that slight of hand? Another slight of hand is when Dawkins goes on to say that he himself saw nothing to force the conclusion of the hypothesis of Persinger, as he wants the conclusion to be true, when both subjects reported the same thing. Then Richard Dawkins smuggled an anti-scientific idea in his monologue in arguing the Persinger helmet produces religious experiences to those who want to believe. This why Dawkins said the priest was lying. What a agoistic man to presume the conclusion and insist another subject isn't telling the truth because it doesn't fit his conclusion. Isn't Richard Dawkins acting like those religious people who insist the other guy is sinful? And the fact V.S Ramachandran doesn't spot Dawkins absurdities is because he also wants to believe his own model of the universe. I think Americans think Brits are sophisticated, like James Bond, and this must be why Richard Dawkins is sean as a heavyweight mind😅 I'm baffled as the near adulation and worship surrounding Richard Dawkins. The man is a narcissist. And the above one upmanship from Richard Dawkins peppers most of his KZread clips. He isnt a fair player in he arena of truth but, like a cult leader, his adoring devotees hang on his every word. Richard Dawkins is wined and dined by a dumbed down world.

    Craziest, most insane thing ever, is that peter popoff has been BACK on television selling his miracle water for several years now 🙄 Mr Randi spent many years doing a great service to his fellow man, by calling out these frauds. I hope he found peace with God and Christ. I firmly believe in the God of the Bible, i understand Mr Randi had doubts about that. Unfortunately, he was brought into a group, like many, that have spent centuries misinterpreting that old book for their own gain. I've had the privilege and blessings of being born and surrounded by many who simply and himbly take the Bible for what it is, and continually seek Gods guidance and blessing in interpreting and applying it to our lives not for gain, but for His Glory.

    @@youtubezcy the only 'holy book' worth mentioning is the Bible. There are thousands of things and ideas through the ages that humans have worshipped, and I understand that the Bible isn't 'easy' to believe, but there's no question there's no other book in history quite as unique as the Bible. And just on a personal note, I feel there is power in that old book. No other spiritual idea has been copied, questioned, misrepresented, or emulated, or plagiarized as much as God of the Bible.

    Atran presents science, empirical data, which goes against Harris’s claims and, tellingly, Harris rolls on past, refusing to engage with the evidence. This is a good example of Harris’s zealotry and preference for scientism over actual science. This is where his commitment to logical argumentation breaks down. Ironically, for Harris, the cause trumps the evidence. All these years later and it’s a paradox h’s never brought himself to confront.

    I have two premises which if you accept then I believe that a certain outcome arises. The first premise is that we believe other minds exist; i.e. we are not solipsists. The second premise is that we can never have direct access to another’s subjective experience (consciousness for brevity) independently of our own in such a way as to verify that they do in fact have consciousness independent of our own. If you accept both premises it follows that we have some criteria for judging if an entity is having subjective experience and that that criteria must involve some comprehension regarding the behavior of the subject. Note that our criteria for judging whether an entity has consciousness normatively is an anthropomorphic procedure. We acknowledge our own subjective experience, and that which behaves similarly - most notably other humans - we conclude must have it too. Insofar as we try to determine if a thing has subjective experience at all, we cannot put the cart before the horse so to speak and say that the ostensibly 'conscious' entity must have any determinate physical makeup. The reason for this has to do with that we cannot understand the mechanism that generates 'consciousness' before we determine what has it. 'Consciousness'/subjective experience is a behavioral indication that is reflective. Complex reflective behavior should be expected of complex entities like humans but one ought to ask what the smallest increment of a 'reflective behavior' might be and what that tends to include and or exclude from our assignation of 'having a subjective experience'.

  • @notlock
    @notlock9 ай бұрын

    And in my first premise when I refer to mind I'm referring to 'a subjective experience' to be clear.

The harm is that he exploited psychic frauds in an attempt to debunk the entire spirit realm. When actually he did no such thing. Also, since Randi has not been convinced yet that the spirit realm exists, and that sometimes spirits communicate with us, it proves his closed mindedness. The self is an illusion, andalong with it all it's most cherished beliefs, the belief in space, time, causality, subject and object, that the universe and all it's object are substantial and real, the belief that life has meaning and purpose, or that we humans at least feel compelled to create them (which is true, but they are only apparently real and sensical pursuits for a self). No self, no reason to try to create meaning and purpose. And when there is seen to be no self the idea of a creator or intelligence or any source behind the universe becomes absurd. Science is still caught in the illusion of the reality of a self even as they show experimentally that it is just an illusion. Feeling the apparent reality of a self compels the self to give significance to itself. But there is no self and nothing to give significance to.

  • @jesusbermudez6775
    @jesusbermudez67758 ай бұрын

    Yes, I do. I've been writing what I observe; however, one such story of the subconscious is this one An encounter with the perfect man I'm sitting outside a coffee shop opposite the university where I work when a lecturer colleague, Fred, as he's going past says to me, 'What's this irresponsible Venezuelan doing in the UK?' Ignoring his remark I ask, 'Have you noticed how students seem to be quite late to classes nowadays?' He checks his stride to say, 'Well, I've noticed how people no longer seem to queue at bus stops.' I continue by telling him about the ring scam where the perpetrator bends just in front of one pretending he's picking up a ring he's just found; he then tries to fit it on one of his fingers, but as it doesn't, he's willing to exchange it for any cash one wishes to volunteer. Remembering how silent I used to be Fred is stunned by my chattiness, and comes to a halt. He gives me a perplexed look as if I were an extra-terrestrial. Rather than continue walking, he backtracks, enters the coffee shop, comes out with a salad and sits beside me. I quiz him on Bill Gates. He replies, belittling this famous person, 'Who's that? Who's that?' So I give him my thoughts on Gates through my interpretation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 'There are two main characters - the Witch and Snow White. The witch represents the person who, although not superior, demands superiority at whatever activity. She is the person who is fuming for not having been born superior. Whereas, Snow White is the person who is superior.' Giving me an inquisitive look he drawls, 'How do you think of that?' I was truly enjoying this. I was finally getting even with Fred after many years of being on the losing side. I go for the killer blow and tell him my thoughts on the perfect man - 'The perfect man goes to Trafalgar Square and stands there like a statue for the rest of his life.' After a silence, he exclaims, 'That's Nelson!' Again he goes silent, whilst I wait to see if the blow has done the trick. Yes it has! He can't take it any more. Suddenly he stands up; with terror filled eyes he asserts, 'It's a question of security.' I lower my head and acknowledge, 'Yes that's the word, security' Staring at me suspiciously he picks the empty plate. 'I'm going to pay the man his security,' he says, and goes into the coffee shop. He comes out, and walking close to me, giving me a distasteful, suspicious, angry and frightened look, and nearly head-butting me he exclaims, 'The birds will shit on him!' Lowering my head, I reply, 'No, he's too strong.' He then distances himself from me. Well, it's now time to introduce the perfect man to others and as there are two colleagues in my office, I ask them, 'Do you know who the perfect man is?' both in tandem reply, 'me!' By now, I can hardly contain my laughter, but I do manage to keep a straight face and tell them, 'No, the perfect man goes to Trafalgar Square and stands there like a statue for the rest of his life.' Both immediately reply, 'The birds will shit on him!' My fourth introduction of the perfect man is to a Kenyan friend. The others had been from Scotland, England and Wales. It just goes to show all human beings are the same because as soon as I mention that the perfect man walks to Trafalgar Square and stands there like a statue, my Kenyan friend tightens his fingers and moving his hand as if he were about to lay something says, 'The birds will shit on him!' Again I laugh, and he remarks, “what are you some kind of psychologist?” Poor perfect man - he is not welcomed anywhere! Questions: why do the people want to attack the statue? What has the statue done to them? If they want to destroy the statue is because they fear the statue, why should they fear an inanimate object? Copyright JA Bermúdez Silva All Rights reserved February 2008 Just a few observations as to why this is of the subconscious. When the people in the office say, "the birds will shit on him!" they are not conscious of saying it. It is their subconscious that is saying it. Similarly when the Kenyan moves his hand, he is not conscious he is doing this, but it is his subconscious that is doing it. I wish Randy were alive so that I could explain to him what I can see. @@sea-pin
