Welcome to my channel named IROCinZ! Here on the channel, I will be doing how-to's and mechanical repairs on just about anything. It was created for people that know the basics of auto care and maintenance but need a guide. The videos will be in-depth and detailed on most things. Of course, the main thing is my Camaros. I grew up with the IROC-Z and alot of my friends drove the 3rd gen F-Bodies and had a blast with them. The aftermarket is great for these cars and you can pick them up fairly cheap.
My background is automotive. I started at a young age with my Grandpa teaching me alot from him being a MAC mechanic. I knew at that point that I liked about anything mechanical, so I made a career of it. It has its ups and downs just like anything else. I decided its now time to share what I learned with the rest of the community.
I hope you enjoy the content, please share it with your friends. My only real goal is for someone to learn something from what I teach...

I know this is an old video but hopefully you will reply How crucial is that washer behind the boost valve? My sonnax .490 valve does not have it and I’m having some weird line pressure issues. I’m wondering if this is part of my problem.
You sure didn’t spend no time on this subject mine is a new cage but when it came apart the bearings tops and bottoms were ate up it was open tcc solenoid and I still ain’t figured out why but it smoked forward spray and bearings
Thank you for the video!!
@JCM111 Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi, good vid though i don't know why you make band adjustment with no pump in. You can see the drum/ shaft move when you apply air. Have you thought about checking after you set the servo shaft length with the tool and pump in, also fit the 4th cover and snap then use dial indicator to cover see how much the cover moves in away from snap ring at rest. This is how I set my transmissions. I have found too long I won't get the snap in and if it just rolls in without force its dam near right.. Plus backyard builders would benefit with such knowledge. more than 1 way to skin a cat.
I wonder what brand of coffee this man drinks
@@dreece2000 I don't...
1:32 thanks for the video and your 4L80e video it has helped me a lot lost my 3rd and 4th gear in my 99 suburban
@@aaronwilliams6562 I'm glad you got something out of the videos!
Thank you for these straight forward videos. I used them as a tutorial for when I installed a Merchant Auto pump rub kit in my transfer case. Very well recorded and explained. One thing I did was I got a dog tag embossed with: Merchant Auto pump rub kit installed, the miles and date. I JB welded it to the hub flat on the outside of the case so others would know it’s been done and when. There’s really no other way to know. I bought the tag from Amazon. The vendor embossed it. 7.50 shipped. Worth it I think.
@@knightandfog Glad you like the videos, and that's a fantastic idea!
That doesn't explain how to get in if you're locked out.?
Great video. I have a TH 400 and it has the same type of reverse servo. When I opened up my pan, the oil was low and two of the six bolts were out of their bores, on the magnet in the pan. Could this have happened due to improper torque? Or was someone in my transmission stealing parts. I bought this truck recently.
Could have been either...or someone attempted to repair it and only partiality put it back together. Glad you got something from the video
Hey Smitty take your #4 apply ring and cut the legs down 1/8" and you will have a #7. I have done it on 18-20 700's and Zero issues.
Thank you for this. Does the shaft that slides out/in for gate need to be lubricated as well?
Not sure, but I would use a light oil like Marvel Mystery Oil or white lithium grease
I like your glasses :)
Do you recommend ATF like the OEM or a different oil like a manual transmission syncromesh fluid?
I think Syncromesh is overkill. I recommend Dexron III but a synthetic. I like Amsoil products. Never had a problem with their oils...
Working on another 4l60e case but this time i can tell the case bushing has been changed which orientation do the notches go? Need to know asap last time i marked them eith paint pen.
Cheap gm design.
Love this, just a pity your not always on target with the focus of your camera
I'm a one man show. Would love to have a head cam, but can't afford it right now...
Whats those little spring you installed called that went on the outside of the 3-4 clutch pack. Im rebuilding a 4l60e and i didnt have those installed.
Those are called load springs. I've seen alot of builders and non builders leave those out. They're not expensive...
Hey buddy - I am trying to figure out my gate which is same model as yours. When I test the voltage on green and white I get 9 volts but when I test on white yellow or blue it is 0. Does that mean the circuit board is bad? Thanks for your help! Appreciate your video it has made me infinitely more knowledgeable.
A HD stock build up is always welcome with a list of "Should replace as long as we are in there". Corvette servo, HD sun shell, wide band, 3-4 pistons and HD clutch build to start. Maybe a little discussion on spacer plates and check balls. Anything to address the weak points. Thanks.
Man, then why do sonnax make those metal balls to completely close the hole. All the videos i seen everyone is doing it.
Its a matter of builder preference more than anything. I prefer to leave the circuit functional.
I busted my center support pressing the bushing in. Just wanted crawl in a hole
Been there, done that, learned from my mistake.
15:20 in when u take the cog gear out it's a one piece and pulls from the top. I have to pull the shift fork out then shaft flip it over then remove snap ring, syncronizer, then cog gear and it's a one piece but bigger that fit around the bigger part of the shaft
Were do you order your parts from ,im in houston ,iv been useing transtar or whatever it takes, who do you recommend?
It's really who you prefer. I like talking to a parts guy, so I use Justin at Total Transmissions in Chicago. They have lots of good used hard parts too
Amen Brother good for you ! Glad he put you on a different path. JESUS IS KING🙏
Yessir!
Love your content buddy, in collage taking heavy duty transport technician in Dawson creek British Columbia Canada, you have definitely picked up a wrench or 2👍 thnks buddy😊
Thanks brother! Good luck on your journey!
Thanks Buddy
Smitty, I have some parts that are different than to 263 HD that you rebuilt. When you pulled the spring for the shift forks, out of the bag there was a small clip inside of it. I also have that but do not remember where it came from, any ideas where it goes? Also should the chain gears line up or will they be at a slight angle?
Send me a pic of the clip to my email at [email protected]. I'm sure if I seen it, I'd recognize it. And yes the gears will not be inline with the case off. They will line up when you assemble the case and get your output bearing in the snap ring.
Hello, My lift master LA400 sometimes does not open or close all the way. Sometimes it would leave a 4 inch gap when closed, sometimes it would close all the way. Sometimes it would slam when closing. No matter how many times I’ve set the open and closing position. It’s like as if it forgets it’s opening and closing positions. Any ideas what the problem could be?
Either a bad board or the limit switches in the arm. They are part of the internal harness of the arm
yo-- in the process of purchasing and 87 Iroc-- TPI I watched the video on you testing the injectors- is there a follow up? Because the one I bought this may be something I run into. Thanks in advance and this is very informative.
I haven't made a follow up video as I ran out of time and money to complete it. I'll be back at it soon...
What a simple but interesting transmission I’m about to tear mine apart it’s really not a complicated transmission compared to newer transmission’s
When they added a 4th gear to a 400 turbo, it makes them more of a pain in the rear. On the other hand, they are made to work...
Dude if you twist the presure switch a little back and forth , dont pull it straight up off the valve body you wont pull the sensor out of the switch like you did. They woll break free from the valve body. And come off easy with no damage.
I usually replace them on my builds anyway, but you are correct.
Thanks for in info
I wanted you to know that I just rebuilt my LBZ t-case with a Merchant Automotive pump and new seals. I watched quite a lot of videos on the subject but yours was the best of them. The lighting, the relaxed methodical pace, the detailed explanation all made your tutorial the most useful. You’re the only builder who detailed the orientation of the rear output shaft seal! I followed your instructions carefully and the project turned out great. Glad I did it too. My tail piece had some pump rub that would eventually have worn through. Installed a t-case brace from PPE too. I’ll be subscribing to your channel. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
I'm glad it helped you in your project!
How do you clean your hard parts?
I usually take them to work and use their hot tank. U can use about anything as long as it doesn't leave a residue. Mineral spirits works good.
@@IrocinZ I usually use brake clean and mineral spirits but didn’t know for certain
Just a little toasty😂😂😂😂
I also have an LA 400 and I just replaced the batteries for the third time since I’ve had it. But this time I continue to have a problem with this gate opener and I was hoping you might be able to put your finger on what the problem is. Today, when I went out to open the gate, I heard three beeps, and the gate would not move. I hit the reset button and still nothing. It was only when I pulled out the 20 amp fuse and put it back in that the gate would operate. But even then, when I pressed it a second time, I heard the three beeps. I put a multimeter on the transformer and it goes up to 24 and then bounces around but 24 seems to be the full trickle charge.
I would try relearning the limits and see if that helps
Turns out I had a bad wiring harness from battery to the board, a bad battery and a transformer that wasn’t charging.
@crownmoldingbyspectaculart941 Sounds like you had a multitude of issues...glad you got it fixed
You’re the only video on KZread that I’ve seen that mentions lining up the manual valve. I didn’t even look at mine, so when I got it together, every gear is forward (R, N, D, 3, and 2) except for 1, because the shifter won’t go over that far. I’m commenting this because I appreciate you showing this part. I’ve got to go take it back apart and line that up. Hoping I can do it without dropping the valve body again.
How did it go doing the same thing. Just did that actually no gears like you said.
@@anthonysarizonacleaningser3629 it worked great, and I didn’t have to take the valve body back down. I loosened all the bolts and removed the ones on that side and it went back together. Works great now. I hauled a loaded bed and trailer full of oak logs and it did it perfect! It’ll spin tires too! 🤙🏻
@@thecodydyer hell yeah just loosed the bolts slid it in gonna start it now lol.
Glad I know where to air check the piston before the output carrier goes in or inwouldnt know being a first timer ..lol
I'm glad I was able to assist you in your venture!
I just. Did. My Trans. Took me. Little to understand but. I done it. Thanks. For the video. Really help me
I'm glad it helped!
Hello Smitty I been watching your videos doing my build. I appreciate your detailed information. I was changing reaction carrier bushing with the new bushing driver kit I bought. The smaller bushing came apart while I was tapping it in, it's in and locked together still but what should I do? Get another bushing and try again? Just curious what Smitty would do. A side of me wants to try again.
Thanks for your support and I'm glad the videos help. Yes, I would try again on the bushing and re-evaluate how I installed it the first time so I didn't get it stuck or split it twice. I can tell you from experience that the best way to install them is in a press. That way you're straight as possible upon installation and the chances of mushrooming the bushing is slim...
Website for parts, please
Merchant automotive or transmission parts distributors is where I recently ordered stuff.
Where did you buy or did you fabricate the Trans stand
That is a GM special tool that I bought
Congratulations on the new job! You will do well Smitty!
Thanks brother!
Are you done with KZread?
Nope...

I'm glad to know that you're doing good Smitty and I wish you and your wife the best for the future. The times are only going to get worse but we all have to deal with it.
Glad you're doing good, Smitty.
Awesome man!!
I’m doing 91 4x4 700r4 SS mega monster in a box kit from monster transmissions. I think it’ll go good!
Good Luck!
I'm brand new so pardon my question. I noticed your stack-up measured 1.16, spec you say is 1.15-1.18 my ATSG manual calls out for 1.20 to 1.24. Also can I refuse my oem steels or should I buy all new steels? Thanks you for your very detailed video it was great minus I couldn't see how the anti-clunk spring was put in.
I got my spec from Sonnax and its been spot on with my builds. Yes you can reuse your steels as long as there aren't any burn marks or warpage. You will need to "scuff" them up a little so they hold fluid. If they are mirrored, they won't "bed" into the new frictions.
I have a LA500 gate operator and it comes up with code 93. I've checked obstructions or if the gate is biding, which it is not. I even tried moving the gate arm without it connected to the gate and it only moves for a second or two before flagging code 93 again. The gears and rod gear look like they are in good condition and move with ease. I'm leaning towards the RPM sensor on the motor itself. What kind of voltage should I be seeing from the RPM sensor when the gate is moving? Would it be different than the LA400 or should it be the same (2.43V)? Also, what ranges of Voltages are acceptable for the rpm sensor? Would Chamberlain happen to have a voltage chart I could reference?
Chamberlin is extremely reluctant to give any information to any DIYer and you're not likely to change that. In the 400 system, the harness with the micro switches go bad causing the board to get false readings. The motor with the rpm sensor goes bad too. The voltage seems like it should be around 2.5 volts
