    42:03 Definitely worth waiting to see your new project finished and think it looks absolutely great. Also totally agree about looking at our gardens at different times of the day as the sun and shading makes such a difference. An example of this is seeing the shadows to the right of your rocks in this morning filming. I guess the shadows will vary during the day and wonder if this might be lost should other materials be placed around or close to the stand alone rocks?

    I absolutely love your little birch in the birch border. I bought the trinity college birch last year as its supposed to be a smaller variety. It came to me at about 7ft and is already 9/10 ft tall. Although it's staked at the base I still panic in high storms as it bends backwards and forwards and Although I'd love it at a decent size, it frightens me as its less than 20ft away from the house and about 5ft from next doors fence. I wish I knew how to shape mine so it looks like yours. Yours is amazing and If I knew how to get a birch to look that brilliant, I'd def buy more

  • @upatgrassybottom9859
    @upatgrassybottom985913 күн бұрын

    Betula Trinity College is small to medium. Early pruning will greatly help, and don't be afraid to remove larger branches at a young age. If you're in the uk, it's better to do this once the leaves are on so late spring. Look up pictures of your preferred shape and use it as a rough guide. Make sure it's anchored in until its roots settle, they are shallow rooted so shouldn't cause a problem to your property, make sure it is well watered in its first couple of years , don't overwater it either. If you check out some of my videos, I explain how to prune without compromising the overall shape. Hope this helps...

    @upatgrassybottom9859 thanks so much I've been too busy enjoying your garden tours but will def find the pruning videos now that I know they are there. I was always on the understanding not to prune a birch in spring and winter because of bleeding? And only to late summer prune. I now dream of a birch the same as yours. Can I take out that main leader? Or will another branch grow twice as quick to take over? I really appreciate yoir time thank you. I've found you on Instagram now too so will have a good look at your account later. You've worked so hard on your garden. It's amazing. I'm after more of a cottage garden myself, but some plants that you have will definitely look interesting in my garden too. Thanks for putting the names of plants on the screen. I can pause and Google them. Best wishes davena in the Midlands in the uk

  • @upatgrassybottom9859
    @upatgrassybottom985913 күн бұрын

    Hello Davena, the sap will have stopped rising once the leaves are fully formed, you can remove the leader, your tree will use another main branch as a leader but you can cut this down by a third, keep checking it every month or so and keep trimming in any that may become the next leader. Hope that helps.

    I planted a bunch last summer and they looked great so this year is the first year to watch them grow and it’s not looking good. I have like 20 and none of the blooms are turning brown they’re still green and all the green grass is turning brown and splintering, they look terrible and I don’t know what’s going on

  • @upatgrassybottom9859
    @upatgrassybottom985916 күн бұрын

    Hi , there are lots of things to affect the grass, and wind will damage some of them. The grass goes through different looks as the year turns. They are prone to rust on the leaves in damp environments. The seed heads go through different phases but eventually turn to a straw colour, at which point the leaves will fall away, leaving a stiffly upright look to the clump, any breaks should be removed, there should be plenty of stalks so it should look better, each season gives a different look, this is what gives this superb grass a long season of interest, my calamagrostis is tidied up when needed, please don't be put off by its look as it sounds like your planting is relatively new, it needs time to mature, I'll do a filmed explanation in my next video to help you out.

    I've seen Chionochloa rubra in many of your videos, it's beautiful and decided that I have to have it! But here in Italy it's not available so I ordered some seeds, and just now I hear you say it's difficult to grow from seeds. Sometimes I read they need cold stratification and sometimes I read they germinate readily if sown in summer. What's the truth? I don't have many seeds and don't want to waste them so was researching the best method to get at least one of them growing. I also really like Miscanthus 'Memory' and fortunately this one is available here so I'm getting it to plant in fall. How long do the plumes stay up in winter? Your garden seems often quite windy so I was wondering how long do they show their seedheads before winter and rain thake them down. Thank you

  • @upatgrassybottom9859
    @upatgrassybottom985928 күн бұрын

    I think that it's best to sow in summer as that would be the time they shed seed, I'm happy to collect some seed from mine to post to you as a backup should yours fail. As for the plumes, each year is different as the weather can affect when they start , but you should get a good couple of months before they shed the seed, but they should be left as they are for winter interest and cut down in February, that's the miscanthus, leave the chionachloa as they are evergreen. Hope that helps.

    I have the Sambuca, too, only mine seems to have arrived all on it's own. I was told it was a type of Elder. I don't think it is. I have another Sambuca, with much finer leaves, that I DID plant. I don't know where it's bruiser of a cousin came from. Very prolific in my garden! I had no idea what they were, for a long time, and they just seemed to start popping up in various spots (so - now they're in pots). I also thought they were different to each other because they seem to have different leaf colours if depending on where they are growing.

  • @upatgrassybottom9859
    @upatgrassybottom9859Ай бұрын

    All sambucus are variable from seed, location will affect leaf colour, yours is likely to have arrived from a local shrub and possibly via a bird, if you like them I suggest you select one you consider a good one.

    I love the silver birches. When you cut that wayward branch off - if you're not going to use it yourself then please give it to somebody else to stick in their garden. :) If I could - I'd have one end of my garden all silver birch. For the moonlight, you see. People tend to plant for viewing in the daytime - but I absolutely love how different pale plants glow in the moonlight. Too late for it this year but, next year, I'm definitely going to get myself a packet of white Nicotiana seeds and just have little pots of them dotted throughout the other things (currently - Alpine poppies, columbine and foxgloves are filling the niche of things that just grow where they like in amongst the other things - but I want some white Nicotiana to do the same thing).

  • @upatgrassybottom9859
    @upatgrassybottom9859Ай бұрын

    The branch has now gone. It's unlikely to root at that size it was. It would require a dedicated person to try to get it to root. It's better to grow from seed , I've done that in the past and got a seed to 10 feet before leaving the property. Have you tried brunnera for a moonlight walk? They look nice in the moonlight, I've recently found a great seedling that shows promise. If it remains good, I'm naming it blue moon as it reminds me of one.

    I think this will be my favourite border, apart from the polo pergola. One thing that screams Japan is cherry blossom. If it's trained "loosely" as bonsai would be stunning. The barrel though for me is like an elephant in the room. 😅 I'm so glad you're moving it. Proportion to the area I feel is too big . So maybe once the planting around it will soften it? Just my opinion and I am open to being persuaded 😊 don't come at me. 😅

    You can plant roses in the same place. If you fill a decent sized cardboard box with new compost/soil and add micro Rizal, by the time the box has disintegrated, all should be well. It has something to do with the micellium that's already made a connection to the old rose that doesn't allow the new rose to flourish.

    Your garden is absolutely stunning. Beautiful roses. How did you design your garden? I love all the trellises and pathways.

    Hi Garden Hardy, I've been doing my own garden designs for as long as I've been gardening, I guess I just have a natural ability and find it easy to do, I love to create and gardening is a deep passion, I mainly re use materials and always aim for a rustic feel, I've been at Grassy Bottom 4 years now, it was almost all grass, I'm going to try put together a japanese style border later this year. Thanks for your kind comments.
