    Hey Dan, just had a question on how you like the Maxquatro braid. I’ve been trying to pick between that and cortland masterbraid. Just wanted to get your preference on it.

  • @DanEvan
    @DanEvanАй бұрын

    I think for an all around canal setup maxcuatro 50lb (40lb diameter) is awesome if you want to pay the money. It’s 0.32mm in diameter. That or Daiwa Samurai 55lb (0.36mm) are both awesome. The Daiwa is round and maintains its roundness so it doesn’t bite into the spool. Couldn’t go wrong either way.

    @@JCB517 it’s nice for no other reason than the diameter to lb test ratio. It’s only a 4 carrier braid so it’s a bit louder but 50lb seems like it’s 30 in your hand and you will see the results casting and how easily your jig gets to the bottom

    @@JCB517 yeah man I started building plugs about 12 years ago for no other reason than I was tired of inferior lures getting ripped to pieces by canal fish. Even through wired plugs having their cheap swivels torn out, or the tail wrap ripped through the side of the plug. Let me tell you it’s a futile fucking enterprise that very few people make money off of unless it’s your full time gig and without the right mentor it can drive you nuts haha. I’m terrified to even think about how much money I’ve spent testing so many different things from epoxy to paint to terminal tackle but the stuff I’m producing now I’d have no problem throwing at 400lb bluefin tuna. I’ve made lures for guys fishing for giant trevally in Australia and used 2.4mm 316 marine grade stainless wire, 5/0 1180lb Spro swivels, 400lb split rings, and a top coat of about 20 coats of automotive clear and 5-6 coats of epoxy and they’ve held up against the meanest fish on the planet no problem.

    Nice catches but not the best fights with that ultra heavy setup

  • @DanEvan
    @DanEvan11 ай бұрын

    It was the fact that the tide was at a transition point and the current had not yet picked up. Those same fish with 4-5 knots of current at their backs, and they’re hyper oxygenated are a completely different animal than slack tide and the heavy setup is not only to stop them from ultimately taking you to the bottom which is a graveyard of crap that will bust you off, but it’s also to make sure I’m not stopping guys downtide from casting for 20 minutes because I’m using an inappropriate setup for the canal. I also don’t want to over exhaust the fish, and because after fishing there for 20 years, and getting my fair share of ass kickings on lighter setups, I decided nobody cares about the fish you almost caught. When I’m in the open surf I use a 10’ ODM evolution rated 3/4-5 oz, moderate action rod, a VS150 with 30lb braid and 40lb leader. The video posted before this one on my channel shows what a 40lb striper with the current at is back can do and that’s an even heavier setup.

Sure he's old & not able to keep up W/demand due to exceptional quality/craftsmanship but unless the lure comes with a 60lb bass attached, it's price dont hold up in weight. Others have set the market and thus he followed suit.. Sure I understand but there's no justifiable reason from a consumer's perspective that I can see. Unless it's just art! The demand went up and the price has gradually gone up with it, and it still doesn’t stop the guy (who is 71) from making his best work to date, and it hasn’t stopped people from cleaning out the store in 2 minutes flat. Just don’t buy them lol. It’s rare I get one these days but I’m happy for Mike getting the credit he deserves. And people don’t realize Mike puts a ton of money back into fishing and conservation.

    Yeah it was stock bottom end for this….never experienced a failure because the truck was probably only making a legitimate 550hp, 1100lb ft of torque…..but the difference between a stock trans/converter vs the limitless diesel built trans with tcm tuning in terms of getting the power to the ground with no loss felt like the truck had another 100hp to the wheels….I eventually did a mild build with carillo rods, mahle pistons, socal beehive valve train, 10mm pump, 60% overs, and a Danville 68 and some other odds and ends. I built this truck from the ground up though. The front end would be good for a full blown 2.6 pull truck, grizzly locker rear (massively regretted that)

  • @DanEvan
    @DanEvan Жыл бұрын

    I think that would make for a great all around setup. I’d personally go for the 14k as it’s the same size as the 10k with a bigger spool and I think it would match better with the 11’ 1328. I had the 1328 before they introduced graphene into the rod blanks and the difference is night and day. The new one with graphene is such a better rod. The rod is kind of a Jack of all trades, master of none. It’s going to throw pencils 3-4 oz, 9” magic swimmers, stick shadds, and if you’re using paddle tail jigs it’s going to be fine with everything up to a 5 oz savage. The SS1329 is more of a dedicated jig stick. Same with the Paiva Century rod. But yeah for a single all around setup the 1328 with either a 14k or 10k saltiga, a high quality 50lb braid and 60lb fluoro leader will be an awesome setup.

    @@l_ogi_l2039 So I would fish those jigs two ways if I were you. One would be like drifting a trout fly and just swinging it just off the bottom in the current. Just know that once it gets past you in the tide that paddle tail is going to make the bait rise so slow your retrieve down. Also don’t always try to make the longest cast. Try a fan pattern of long, medium and short casts. As far as yanking it off the bottom I just don’t think it’s necessary with a paddletail. You can lift the rod or snap it off the bottom quickly but anything more exaggerated than that is just yanking the jig out of the strike zone imo

    Your videos are awesome! Haven’t seen any new videos from you in awhile. Are you still fishing the ditch?

    I’ll always be fishing the ditch brother. And I probably have enough content filmed to make 10 great videos, but once my channel started getting over 100k, I couldn’t help but think I was part of the problem on those days where the place was shoulder. But the canal will always be so special to me. Caught my first keeper there 28 years ago, caught my first fish over 30lbs on a plug I made, got my first landbased 50 there etc.
