Welcome!
I’m a multiple award-winning indie documentary filmmaker and television producer, and an East L.A. native, with countless credits in journalism spanning a 30-year career.
I’m here to provide you with alternative, underreported and misunderstood narratives that deserve broader attention and analysis - stories that focus on communities of color in the U.S., particularly American Latinos in the West.
As owner of Moxie Media Productions, a company whose mission is to increase public awareness of these critical stories, I believe representation in media matters because it sends a message to people being represented that their existence is both acknowledged and valued. It shapes how minorities and marginalized groups are viewed and how they view themselves.
We need a more inclusive industry so every person of color is seen, heard, and represented equally, fairly, and authentically.
It's my hope you subscribe and see storytelling told from a Latina perspective. Thank you.

They didn't care about us in school teachers. They would just pass us through to get rid of us not caring if we learned something or not. But look at us now. We are everywhere hospitals, fast food, police departments, government workers, Siri workers. We are everywhere, and we are in control.
I met Sal Castro in 2009 or 2010 at UCR. Great day.
Settler colonialism offers no encouragement for its adherent's use of their imagination. They aren't supposed to concern themselves about what happens in segregated schools, and might think that it's merely a separation of their own precious students from a community stereotyped in advance, defaced, debased, criminalized and rendered toxic as role model, gerrymandered of the vote, and of psyche, neutered of politics, red-lined of myths and legends, and Victimised as culture. The Casa Blanca Elementary School was quick to recognize my reading abilities they would have preferred I wasn't taught, used me in their racist Thanksgiving play as narrator, and in gratitude attempted to stab me in the back to my grandparents. The principal, who spied on my Raza to squash any union organizing and therefore stealing our very lives, attempted to convince them that I might be a thief. My grandmother, who raised me knew better, and sent Mr. Mabra Madden of the Riverside County Educational system packing. The Raza laborers had been winning too many strikes, and the powerful Citrus interests began flunking the darker skinned boys as "uneducable" to have an unemployed labor pool to use against their own community as strike breakers.
Alyson. Bienvenida. Your participation in my successful network of some years back is much appreciated, I derived much from the experience, My work was attempting to be broadly inclusive of race, culture, social class, political views, origins, religion, color of skin, and however brief it seems, gave me much to think about. The indigenous US and Alaska tribal communities will always be welcome here, and the First Nations peoples in Canada, as well as Europeans, Africans and Asians. I made sure to include our raza's and other cultures historical figures. I attached a foto-blog giving a visual idea of who and how varied of race, color class, etc. we seemed to represent, and I strove to avoid too much personal input, but allow, hands off, the network "union," or relationship in any way with each other to be what it wished to be. Which leaves me more focus as simply a functionary at the gate. There's more, of course. But I simply want us to know each other better. Do bring your family and your friends.
Sal Castro is a great educator, leader, chicano, mentor.👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
All of these comments are from 7-8 years ago when this isn’t something that should be forgotten about this still needs to be discussed more people need to know about this

There's NEVER been justice en los estados unidos, NEVER!
HOW COME I NEVER HEARD ABOUT THIS
I'm Chicano and don't identify with this movement. I never felt I was ignored at school or that I couldn't become good at something here in the US back in the 1970's. I had many friends both white and brown. I don't think it's a good idea to think in a herd mentality. That I can only do what Chicanos are expected to do. No thanks, that's not me. I reserve the right to be independent. I always have.
That's fine as long as you realize that there's a system in place to keep people of your skin color down. Even if you follow all the society rules correctly you will never be fully accepted
@@ibrake4rappers You're imagining things. There are many successful Hispanics throughout the world.
I teach this in my Ethnic Studies class and today I am specifically focusing on Sal Castro for our Ancestor Recognition. He is a hero and such an inspiration and being a Chicana and Social Studies teacher, I thank him and all his dedication to the Chicano community. I also want to mention that my parents were those students that walked out in 1968. My mother Olga Martinez and father William Ortiz went to Roosevelt and Wilson High! Viva La Raza!!!!
VIVA LA CESAR CHAVEZ VIVA LA MAS VIVA LA UFW VIVA LA DELORES HUERTA
Houston, TX, that’s what’s needed! All through SW US!!!
Yet they suppress and deny us the right to learn about "our" history
I WANT TO THANK YOU ALL, MY BROWN ELDERS, THE ONES I NEVER KNEW ABOUT, IF U CAN ,CAN U SPREAD CHICANO STUDIES HERE IN THE EAST COAST, BECAUSE NOBODY HERE EVEN KNOW ABOUT BROWN HISTORY AND ITS SAD AND SICKNING TO KNOW UR RACE IS BEING SET FOR SERVENTUDE, I ASK THE LORD TO TAKE THE YOKE OFF OF ME AND MY NATIVE AMERICANS NATIONS AND TO FILL US WILL GRAND WISDOM, IN JESUS CRISTO NAME AMEN
Viva la Raza still stands today
I am a 43 year old alumi of LAUSD and I am just now learning about Mr. Castro. This need to be taught at ours schools.
Different options??? You dj and sing? Or you have band? What charge per hour to dj and sing some songs??
I see a lot of comments saying this should be taught in school. I hope the person who posted this sees this comment because this is part of the curriculum in one of my social studies classes.
Thank you so much for teaching this important part of our community’s history. This should be taught in our schools. It’s time.
Well, I too am a Chicano. I was there in East LA saw this and participated in much more. As a veteran my advice to this generation now is this: It's far from over and things haven't changed much except for what is and has been allowed socially, politically, economically, and more. Maybe Chicanos need to look at themselves in the world mirror before God in Heaven. And ask: to what end is so-called education versus learning how to use their minds, brains, their will to live. Otherwise they are at the mercy of other nations. That's my experience from seeing other lands.
This information teaches us Mexican Americans the struggle our ancestors had to push through to get us where we are at today.... Still much to fight for to change our public schools....
I’m so so proud of all of these brave Mexican-American students who fought for what they knew they deserve!!! They paved a path for the future we don’t ever hear about again. THANK ALL OF YOU!!
im the only mexican in my family dont have much contact with my mexican side but my grandfather was white and raised me also hated when id speak spanish and i wasnt allowed to now that im an adult and have a daughter more mexican than me i wish i could help teach her but were gonna learn together shes giving me a second chance to learn something so important culturally that my white grandfather tried to erase and "white wash"{sorry if that offends i cant think of a better way to put what dude was trying to do}
He would always be edged in my heart...............Mexica by proxy, Salvadorean strong ..I loved this man............
Everything was good until Carlos Santana shows up 🤮
Try growing up in Texas where schools taught Texas History and Mexicans were spoken as the trouble makers in Texas history. Take for instance the History of the Alamo,,they only spoke of all of the men that fought for the independence of Texas when they didn’t even talk about how Mexican land was being taken away from Mexican land owners and given to Caucasian cowboys of that era.

This man is the man thanks you for being you
And still happening in 2022 this is America?!
Great actor, great human being, horrendous skin.
The tenacity of a few can become the purpose of many. School boards in the inner city of Los Angeles needed a good kick in the pants that year. Despite tremendous opposition and years of passivity. I was 14 then. The gears of educational development and opportunity began to move , albeit slowly, because of those like Sal Castro. Brave and persistent. High school students in communities like Boyle Heights, ELA and others of mostly Chicano families soon realized their dream of attending colleges and universities. Ten years after the walkouts, it culminated in 1978 with a degree from a California State university in Journalism and Communication.... my degree. All i needed to put me over the edge in the beginning was that grant. Money that my parents didn't have. Just to be able to put me in the process. And after 44 years in the business, i can retire from something i loved to do. Not many can say that. But it is possible. Thank you, Mr. Castro and the other mentors who told me it wouldn't be easy but they would make sure i had that shot. Noe, i had no idea you worked on this. great job with the editing.
i went to Roosevelt high , ran around those stairs that football field and never knew about the injustice that had happened there . The school never thought us about it .
It was terribly hard to convince our Mexican parents of that time, that this student cause was a good cause. Most of our parents were more afraid than us about the consequences of our protest but later as they saw the helmeted cops beating us on TV, some of them joined us. Mr. Sal Castro RIP.
I’m so glad and grateful my school taught the students about this beautiful movement and even write about it
I never was thought this and I grew up in LA
Mr. Castro was my history teacher in 1985 at Belmont West Wing building
Came to this after watching the movie, Walkout.
AND THAT'S WHY I DON'T VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS💩🐀 THEY LOVE 💲💲💲 MAKING MONEY OUT OF THE HISPANICS AND THE BLACKS WITH THE RACE CARD, THEY WANT TO KEEP US AS SLAVES PRETENDING THEY ARE FOR US, WHEN IN REALITY THEY ARE USING US. THEY DEMOCRATS ARE THE FOUNDERS OF THE KKK, THEY HAVEN'T CHANGED❗
Who doesn't love making money? The Democrats did not found the KKK, it was former Confederate Army officers that founded the organization.

Yes, he really was and still is an inspiration. Sal Castro... ¡Presente!
Viva El Señor Castro!!!
Greasy tacos? Mexican tacos are not greasy, American style tacos are
I never said Mexican tacos are greasy, the tortillas are mostly freshly made and fluffy not greasy except ones that are fried, but most street tacos are not fried, and the don't use ground meat the nor cheese on there Tacos, use stake, depending which tacos its all meat
The La Raza organization is not Mexican, its American, Mexicans nor Americans don't deserve to be treated that way
It's Mexican american just don't call it Hispanic or latino
They should build a school to be named after this Chicano heroe
Yes, they should and they did. The Sal Castro Middle School was founded in 2009 in honor of Sal Castro and was originally named Belmont Middle School, located in Los Angeles: www.salcastroms.com/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=444664&type=d !Sal Castro Presente!
they should identify all the cops that beat up mexicans.. those cops should send money to the families that they beat up.. #reperations
It is evident he deeply immerses himself in his characters. In my opinion his best scene was in Zoot Suit where he is stripped, stands in a loin cloth of sorts and gives an emotional and tearful speech to no one, but everyone.........
Sal Castro was a true leader who was able to discern the wrongs perpetrated on the Mexican community in Los Angeles long before the spotlight was cast in his direction. He fought hard and he fought the good fight for many to follow years after his termination and subsequent reinstatement. His teachings and guidance should be part of secondary school curriculums throughout the United States, not as activism, but of education for those, no matter what color of one's skin to learn about and embrace human rights. One of the things not mentioned in this video was of the outcome of Castro's arrest where he was exposed to a 66 year incarceration. He was represented in court by another young Mexican human rights advocate attorney named Herman Sillas, also from the heart of Los Angeles. There are many unsung hero's in this story, but unfortunately this many years later there is still much work to be done to close the book on these uncivil actions. May Sal Castro rest in peace....
He was a good man, but goals are only short-term successes. That is why I can't be too enthusiastic about him.
