Brings back memories to an extent. Lived in Hbg 1987-81 stationed there at then Headquarters U.S. Army Europe. It was so easy to bop down to the station on bicycle, park/lock it there for the day, and take a day trip to, say, Frankfurt, Mannheim, or even Stuttgart. Could even walk there from my barracks if I chose to. Easily bought a round-trip ticket at the window, no ID or name required. Late in my tour I discovered at the station restaurant they served a hot alcoholic drink called a 'Russian Chocolate', unfortunately I never bothered to ask what was in it, I surmise it might have been a hot chocolate with a shot of vodka. Also a drink called 'Karabik', but had no idea what was in that one. Both very good, though. Cannot find any reference to either online. A lot has apparently changed in/around the station since then. Automated ticket machines and many more vendor shops/kiosks. Also expansion of the tram network serving the station. But I cannot remember if there were even escalators between the overhead concourse and the train platforms, I just remember stairs. Funny, I did not notice here those big yellow train schedules that used to be posted on the concourse, with their red and black lettering. I would think there are schedules posted somewhere, just maybe not as prominent in display. Trains looked different then, too, no sleek-looking red ones, mainly the old DB first and second-class cream-colored carriages and blocky locomotives. They sure got up to speed fast, though. How I would so like to go back and see it all again for myself. Ditto for the rest of the city, too.

The Government of India says that Bhopal's Rani Kamalapati Railway Station is built on the lines of Germany's Heidelberg station, but it is completely different. I didn't like Hederberg station anything special. After 3 years from today, Rani Kamalapati will look much more beautiful than this and will be more organized than this. I support railway privatisation. jai hind
