This teaching of 1st fruit has no relationship with how Christians should give according to New Testament principles. When we draw lessons from the OT, basic training as a biblical Christian requires that you sieve it through the NT so as to reflect what is required of us as Christians. In the first place there’s no place in the Christian church where we are required to surrender all our monthly earnings to the church. The requirement has always been that we should decide at the beginning of the week what to give, AS WE HAVE EARNED. Each Christian believer is required to give based on his or her capacity and cheerfully and not out of compassion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (1Cor 16) It amounts to absolute callousness for the preacher to postulate that one should not bother about what happens next after surrendering your January salary because they would definitely survive like how those who are unemployed and without income do. He should have told them how the unemployed survive. Is it by borrowing? Is it by begging? Is it by compulsive dependence on others or by lying and stealing or perhaps manna falling from heaven? Remember our God is not a task master, he would never give us snake in place of meat, neither would he give us stone in place of bread, but your sermon this money has portrayed God as a task master who is out to punish all and make them less prosperous in 2024 for not giving their 1st fruit, moreover, you have made God a transactional God by insisting that 2024 blessings is based on 1st fruit. (Too bad😢!). You made mention of Abraham. Some of us do not understand that the New Testament interpretation of Abraham’s intended sacrifice of Isaac as his 1st fruit was not basically to test Abraham. God does not tempt us! God was trying to graphically illustrate to Abraham the horror of child sacrifice which was a cultural practice involving mostly the first male fruit of the womb. God was making it clear to Abraham that He is not like the gods of the Canaanites and that instead he is willing to make provisions for them and that he did by providing the ram for the sacrifice. In other words, God was saying instead of killing your offsprings, kill this ram in place! Today we have been freed from all forms of sacrifices through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross! Therefore, there remains no more sacrifice except that of Christ! There remains no more 1st fruit to sacrifice! Finally you said through your sermon that your listeners should not inquire about how money given to the church is spent. This is very unethical as well as unAnglican! Our church practice requires accountability. That is what makes us different from the others. We should encourage our parishioners to demand accountability from the priest because it is an attribute of ethics and responsible governance. Saying that the priests’ income is very low is no longer tenable. It is an emotional half truth. By the time you calculate total take home of some priests, especially in urban and high brow areas ALONG with that of their wives who work and also get some benefits from the women’s ministries, you may discover that an Anglican priest in Lagos who asking his parishioners to give him all their January salary is doing nothing but corporate begging and does not have compassion for the people he has been called to shepherd, especially in this hard time of Nigeria. In case you think me of lowly lettered and lack proper theological fulcrum, I am Rev Canon Chinemerem Uche.
