  If you notice, Zero is mainly taking damage early on after he starts aiming. I imagine that is because he had to use his thrusters to speed up to get ahead of the station. So early on before he could fire the thrusters in the opposite direction to begin slowing down he was moving through the atmosphere much faster than he would for re-entry. In order to line up the shot, he is likely also moving through re-entry at a steeper angle than he normally would.

  I think the manga version of this scene is cooler where the other four Gundams grabbed onto the Wing Zero as it was falling in order to stabilise Heero's aim.

  When I watch this as a dumb youngin, I wondered why Heero waited so long to fire. Rewatching it made me realize he HAD to destory the nuclear engine to actually make sure the Small-Country-sized piece fully disintegrated, and he only had one shot to make count.

  Any of those dub critics who think Heero's English VA was too monotone compared to the Japanese version of Gundam Wing should really view this moment. I certainly buy it the way he says "I will survive!" From what I've read anyway, the English dub's voice director kept telling Mark Hildreth to be monotone all the time so he was just following orders (just like Heero always does, "Mission Accepted").

  He had to Aim for the Nuclear Engine inside to Completely Destroy it so he needed it To be Stabilized for the Nuclear Engine to be in the Firing Range.

  It’s the zero system on board. Basically the lock on going haywire was because the zero system was trying to find the best shot and couldn’t. When heero proclaimed he was going to survive his will basically overrides the zero system telling him there was no chance. That’s why the shot stabilized after his declaration

  @@LithKast a busted tech system is practically a staple all all major Gundam series, where the main protag has some kind of system/super computer/engine that can connect their thoughts to the machine and then boom, human mind and willpower can overcome science and logic

  This was a significant event in Heero's character for another reason besides the fate of the Earth. During the entire series, Heero did not care whether he lived or died; he only cared about the mission at hand. However, while he was descending into the atmosphere with Wing Zero's buster rifle pointed at the Libra, he proclaimed that "he will survive". This shows that his time with Relena had given him a will to live and something to protect.

  One of the major points in this scene is that the Zero system was telling Heero that he was going to die and his actions were going to fail, but he skipped right past zero percent probability and managed to not only survive but also destroy the station fragment. That is the real significance to his statement "I will survive".

  Recently did a and enitre rewatch (last time was when I was a kid, If I remember correctly) To build up to this moment was pretty intense. Wufei killed Trieze, Dorthory almost killed Quatra, Zechs and Heero fight all over Libra and then it falls, they blow up most of it, then more falls, the gundams run inside and try to peice it apart and still an engine falls, then this shot. Knowing how much of crack shot Heero is, him not being able to steady aim and the music, it gets to you.

  I always figured that, in addition to the sheer fusion-style heat damage, most of the destruction a Beam rifle causes is from EMP. Like, they're shooting stations and ships and other things filled with stuff like generators, fuel cells, motors of all types, computers, etc. And a really big EMP shock sent through it all could cause all kinds of internal explosions that would rip things apart even faster than repeatedly punching holes with the rifle. Explains why shit tends to explode and not JUST vaporize when hit with a beam, or in proximity to a beam. It just... destabilized everything it touches and everything the effect can be transferred through. Also explains why EM shields like the Mercurius could deflect or negate beamshot, if the shield was strong enough: it breaks the EM bottle that keeps the particle beam contained, and disperses the energy away from whatever it is protecting. Bigger shield generator means more power to deflect.
