UrbanAge

UrbanAge

Since 2005, LSE Cities has run the Urban Age project, an international investigation of cities jointly organised with the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft. Through conferences, research and outreach, the Urban Age charts the diverse spatial, social, economic and political dynamics of global cities in different regions of the world, including; Addis Ababa, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro, London, Hong Kong, Istanbul, São Paulo, Mumbai, Mexico City, Johannesburg, Berlin, Shanghai and New York City.

The Urban Age is an authoritative source of comparative data and visual information on over 60 global cities and urban regions, and a repository of critical writings, reflections and presentations by urban leaders, practitioners and experts.

Building on this extensive knowledge base and interdisciplinary expertise, the Urban Age Task Force, launched in 2019, is working with city governments to help deliver sustainable urban change at the environmental, social and spatial level.

The greatness of a nation or City can be judged by how it’s society treats its weakest and poorest members. Mahatma Gandhi. Unfortunately In this aspect, Hong Kong has failed miserably.

Did he just say ‘Not in Cairo and then said in Africa’ 😄.. very simplistic and uninformed suggestion. Addis Ababa’s level of density in his so called slum is very high. It’s not as easy as he imagines.

Great talk. Writing about smart cities at the moment, but I've got a question: 6:20 - What does Sennett mean by Fordism in the context of Masdar City? I understand Fordism as a socio-economic arrangement whereby the citizen is conceived to have the dual role of a consumer of products (Ford motor cars for example) and as subject to marketing. What does Fordism mean in the context of urbanism? What is a Fordist city?

If one look past often grandiose declarations (particularly known) architects make about their profession, those most satisfied with their job tend to be dim witted science wise and university education is all amalgamation of art/history/english majors. I regret graduating with this pussy degree where architects office environment can be very petty & stifling. If you honor STEM, best to stay away. Cream does not necessarily rise to the top in this profession i.e. you have to be buffoonish and sell yourself. Also many so called known architects are not from best undergrad schools including this ding dong Foster fella. That should tell you something.
