I saw Jerry with Stan sometime in the early-mid 70s, possibly in South Bend but for sure somewhere in northern IN. My dad was a massive Kenton fan so I saw Kenton with drummers including Jerry, John Von Ohlen, and Erskine. I was a fledgling drummer in the 70s and Jerry was kind enough to give me his sticks after the performance, which I'm pretty sure I still have kicking around the house. He really left an impression on me and I pretty much learned to drum playing along with albums by Kenton, Maynard, Buddy, etc. No doubt I was drumming along with Jerry on some Kenton albums without knowing it. What a great guy and this was so interesting to hear him rehash his musical career 50 years later! 🙂

Dave Bennett is an energetic performer, entertainer and musician. His shows are uplifting and have a way of transporting the audience to a time where they may feel as if they are in the same room or club with Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Roy Orbison,Jerry Lee Lewis, or Chuck Berry. Dave is Always fun, Always a gentlemen, kind, humble and sweet too. I'm proud to call him my friend. 29:09 And he inspires me to be a better musician.

Jerry McKenzie taught me so much about playing I a big band and how to set up the kicks. No, I never had a lesson with him; rather, I listened to “Kenton at the Tropicana” album over and over. He understood how to not overplay, but by the right timing and precision kick the s-t out of it! Many thanks. Remember “You and I and George?” Cheers!

@@sinnott4 Thank you for a great interview. My father played in the Kenton band with Jerry on the West Side Story album and several others in the early `60s, including Adventures in Jazz and Sophisticated Approach. Curiously, two Jerry McKenzies played drums for Kenton, the first one leaving in 1959 and the second one succeeding him the same year. Could you ask Jerry about that? It seems to be a source of confusion.
