vswitchzero

Hi everyone, I'm Mike, a KZreadr and blogger from Canada. I have a channel and blog called vswitchzero, which focuses on retro PC hardware and gaming from the 1990s. I love to showcase all sorts of interesting retro technology and repair/restore old and neglected hardware. In addition, I occasionally create content in other technology areas including VMware products, Linux and more!

Thanks for your comment! It’s not an overdrive socket with the extra row of pins required, unfortunately. The extra pins are just for power delivery if I’m not mistaken. That said it could be possible to create a socket adapter for it, which would be an interesting project 🙂

These things where quite expensive as well and i decided that it was cheaper to go to slot1 and then overclock the p2 from 400mhz to 533 by using 133mhz fsb and a petal cooler I had friends with genuine ss7 systems.

Specs of my Ultimate 1999 Gaming PC that I just recently got up and running of which most if not all of the parts are from 1999. I even have not just a LITE ON 52x CD-RW Drive installed but also a Creative PC-DVD ROM Dxr2 installed. I even have a HP CD Writer Plus 8200e External USB CD-RW Drive plugged into the system. Looks simillar to the HP CD Writter 9200 Plus that was on my dad’s AMD K6-2 build which was clocked at 450 Mhz with a ATI 3D Rage 128. Motherboard: Abit BE6-II Revision 1.0 Processor: Intel Pentium III clocked at 650 Mhz (Originally I wanted to either go with a Pentium 3 clocked at 550 Mhz in order to have something that was close to what I had with a Dell Optiplex GX1 or a Pentium 2 clocked at 266 Mhz so that I could slow the system down significantly) RAM: 256 MB Hard Drive (had): 60 GB QUANTUM FIREBALL PLUS AS (Extremely loud) Video Card: 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000 (AGP Varient) Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster AWE64 Value CT4520 (Used this in a Gateway Essential ESS 450 SE from 2015 to 2017 that I used to have and even though I have Yamaha OPL3-SA as well as ESS AudioDrive this card being the only Sound Blaster 16 compliant card around makes it a really good choice) Network Interface Card (NIC): Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card Version 2.0 (I use this primarily for playing online video games) Re-enabled the HighPoint (LowPoint) HPT 366 Ultra DMA 66 controller that is onboard and hooked up a 2 TB Western Digital hard drive as the replacement for the Quantum drive. I am using a StarTech IDE to SATA Hard Drive or Optical Drive Adapter Converter that was not playing nice with the Intel i440BX chipset. I recommend at least a minimum of Ultra66 in order for this adapter to work properly. I used the Highpoint drivers on the Abit BX-1.67M Motherboard CD. Instead of using the Highpoint UDMA66 controller instead best thing to do is install a UDMA100 IDE controller such as the Promise FastTrack TX2000 or even a SCSI controller card like this Adaptec AHA-2940UW. This particular SCSI card does 50-Pin as well as 68-Pin SCSI. Just remember to not use that fourth PCI slot.

I miss the days where you could swap a CPU and have a night and day difference in performance. I just went from an R5 3600 with 32GB of 3.2GHz DDR4 (4x8) to a 7600X with 32GB 6GHz DDR5 (2x16) and honestly there has been a slight improvement on paper but my overall experience is moot. :(

It's crazy just how far tech has come. You mentioned some of these being $300 or more at launch while I paid less than that for my Ryzen 7 3800X during black friday a few years ago. And even my original R5 1400 is leagues ahead of these old chips and isn't even worth $100 anymore. I always find it fascinating and interesting just how fast technology exploded in performance over such a short time. Only 30 years and now we got 16 core monstrosities with clock speeds pushing 6ghz at the top tier, like the i9-14900k or R9 7950X3D. (I also can't help but to find it funny that those old AMD chips have prefixes of "AM5" and now they've created socket AM5... Full circle hehe...)

I had an AMD "586" Dx4 133 that still went into a 486 socket, a rather rare chip in the uk but it was very quick with the right board compared to a normal 486 dx4 100, :) wish I still had it.

AMD used the slot based setup like the PII with the initial Athlon. It was basically a backward Slot 1. It didn't last, though. They went to Socket A pretty quickly though, because slots were a stupid idea.

Be interesting to put a k6-3(3+) 450 to see if the extra cache makes a difference. Could be the ultimate socket 5. Crystal swap could get a little extra speed too

I remember having a 286/16 and trying a 1:1 bus ratio. My CGA card burst into flame! But once I'd patched around the damage (which was oddly at the output, so it may have had nothing to do with the ISA bus) the whole thing worked fine and was quite a bit faster! I didn't have the nerve to leave it unattended like that though, after what had happened to the CGA card.

I worked at a company back in the day where we imported components for the company's computer brand from Taiwan. We used UMC Green for the low price range. I remember it had some small issue with a certain software but made a very good computer for the price. I even visited the factory in Taiwan once.
