International Law MOOC

International Law MOOC

This channel is linked to the massive open online course (MOOC) 'International Law' on edX.org. It's a course provided by Pr. Pierre d'Argent, from Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium. It's free to enroll for anybody. Information and enrollment: www.edx.org/course/international-law

International law is one of the fastest growing legal fields. This course explores how International law is made, applied and enforced.

At the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Explain how and by whom international law is made, by whom it must be respected and how it is applied.
- Discuss what happens when binding rules are breached and how is it possible to seek justice in this world.

So, if you want to understand what is international law, what role it plays in the world of today, how it can be used or if you want to be able to discern legal arguments within the flow of international news and reports, this course is for you!

Here, in summary, I would like to request an analysis of the Brazilian case that occurred on January 8, 2023 in the invasions of public buildings in Brasília. Patriotic citizens demonstrated for 70 days in an orderly and peaceful manner in front of the Army barracks, believing that the military was their only chance of salvation against the communists and also because they wanted the results of the elections to be verified by asking for the source codes of the ballot boxes. electronics. Exhausted by waiting for answers, they were driven to more extreme acts. According to reports, on this day, 01/08, soldiers from the Armed Forces carrying weapons threatened to remove them by force if they did not leave the front of the barracks peacefully. They lied and deceived them by saying that they had managed to get several buses that were close to the camp and that they were supposed to get on them, as they would be being taken to a better and safer place. However, they handed over approximately 1200 of these citizens to be arrested, taken to the Federal Police sports hall, where innocent elderly, women, children, sick and disabled people, who did not participate in the acts of invasion, without any attribution or distinction of crimes, remained without water, food and toilets. They were attacked, psychologically tortured, wounded by bullets and bombs. More than 700 are still imprisoned in male and female prisons without any contact with family members and without lawyers who can only act with prior authorization from the Minister of the Supreme Court Alexandre de Moraes. , women without tampons, open bathrooms, dirty and bad food, and those who have only been released in recent days, receive a certificate as terrorists and are placed under house arrest where they are forced to wear an electronic anklet, prohibited from communicating with others involved, from using internet and social networks. Images that prove all these authoritarian abuses are widely available on the main social networks.

Thanks for a great video! just a quick question, Do you think that Human Rights standards as we know them today should be used in the recognition of new States and Governments? Or can we afford not to apply these standards to a political question?
