5:46 - That was a telephone booth. Also, its a shame you can't visit Harris' in San Bernardino, CA. It was on this level of design and was a bit bigger. Sadly, it's closed now :/

You should do a video on Pacific Ocean park. Feel like you would dig how that park looked before it was destroyed.

I want to stop by here. Grew up in Southern California. The style is interesting, a mix of Modernism and Googie/Space Age As someone who was born in California it’s easy for me to drop into the whole “everything old gets torn down,” but there are a LOT of gems in the state.

❤-Memories! -this is completely memorable for me because I was 22 and I was a waiter in the bullocks tea room on the third floor in my early and mid 20s from 1988 through the mid 1990s when it finally closed thank you for the memories. I remember walking around that whole area on my break or after I got off work and shop, and it was a wonderful tea room that served a lot of women & their tea sandwiches-I miss those days in the 80s and early 90s when we served delicious warm cheese strata on the menu and pop overs-and it was the only place/ Also Tuna Nicoise in the L.A area where you could have popovers with your tea or as the English would call Them-Yorkshire pudding with my server job at bullocks. I put myself through Pasadena city College those days in the 80s and 90s. And let’s not forget these ladies would enjoy an early midmorning fashion shows almost every day folks and the women would have their lunch as they peruse through the models latest apparel from Givenchy and Balenciaga-thank you for this and thank you for reminding me of good memories working at the Bullock Pasadena tearoom. It was like the 1950s/1960s in there and I was glad to have been part of it !

Thank you so much for this, Merch! Had NO idea this place was still in existence! You did some great work here per the overall history and tour of this lovely place! Both happy AND surprised (given the current tenant's more recent business history) they've kept most of detail intact - though they really should have kept the original signage on that wall! If i ever find myself out that way - i'm definitely going to have to make a visit to the Pasadena Bullock's/Macy's for sure!!! ^,,,,^

I get it but but they should restore the small 'Bullocks Pasadena' signage at the the door rather than leave the open holes... everyone knows its a Macy's but that stainless steel sign would really add to the nostalgia/ museum side of the building.

Pasadena, California Bullock was like Disneyland at Christmas back in the 60s when I as a child first got to shop with my Granda Mother. Back then it was a kinder & elegant time, where shoppers got dressed up to go there. Thanks for the Fond memories.

I appreciate the historical intent of this video and it’s interesting. However, there is continued misinformation every time I see a video referring to Pasadena as “the city of Roses”. If you lived in the area and know your history and neighborhood you’d know it was actually referred to as the “Crown City”. You can find the crown in the city seal and various business have Crown City in their title for this reason. The nickname “City of Roses” was used for the neighboring city of Rosemead. 😉

Great video! When I visited I was struck by the sign in the elevators which reads something like "Automatic Elevator: use buttons to operate." I assume that this is because some or all shoppers at the time it was opened were still new to elevators without elevator operators and needed to be nudged to click the buttons themselves (?). That's just a guess, but I'd like to think it's true. :)

Absolutely Gorgeous building. so glad that they preserved it. everything back in the 1940's was so well designed and thought out. from function to aesthetics . 😍 sad that some parts were Modernized, thus ruining the original design and glamor of it.... another beautiful historic building that has been preserved, is Bullocks Wiltshire, tho it isn't a department store any longer [ Now a Law Library ] it is still a beautiful building, and most of its original aesthetic has been restored and saved.😀

I was there for that fire. I never saw the theater when it was open, but even as a kid I was sad it was going to be lost. One small correction is the park that was also a flood control basin was always called the Pan Pacific Park, even before the theater burned down. The community center in the spot of the old theater was dedicated in 2002. I happened to see the theater burn because I was riding my bike around the park that day when the flames erupted. In the 70s and 80s LA wasn't much into preservation so many wonderful old buildings were lost to neglect.

It looks like it used to be like a 5-star hotel and how its been downgraded to a cluttered 3 star. But it's nice they kept this building and I will make a visit when I'm in LA next time. When Bullock's existed, their clothes where much better quality and designs than Macy's. Thanks for making the video..

I grew up on Lake St. one town over called Altadena. My cousin's and I would ride the RTA Bus here when we were 9 or 10 years old. No parents, no cell phones, no worries back in the late 80's. They even had a good toy section that was in a separate room from the main store. My best memory was when my father took me shopping and bought me a leather bomber jacket in 1988. I miss Old Pasadena

Sorry, but unless the city is willing to keep up the maintenance of a building it should NOT be declared a special building that cannot be demolished. This just leads to wrecks and the owners not being able to do anything with it! It is just a downward spiral to everyone’s detriment.

I lived up the street from the Pan Pacific when I was a kid. In fact, it burned down back when o was in High School. I remember taking my Go-Kart to the nearby Drive-In (closed down)when I was a kid- it was fun looking at the auditorium as I drove by it. But like everything else in Los Angeles, the city leaders allowed the whole facility to languish until it was destroyed by fire in the late-80s. From what I was told, the Grove shopping center was supposed to build on that lot, but was thwarted by the whole “historical monument” thing, which resulted in their using Farmer’s Market instead.

Wow, the kid's barbershop really brings back memories. When I was a small child in the early 70's, Mr. Saul cut my hair regularly in that brightly-colored space. It looks EXACTLY as it did 50 years ago! In the clip, you can see the walls are full mirrors on opposite sides of the room, which always fascinated me because when you sit in those chairs the mirrors make it look like that tiny space goes on forever....

Sadly, I was never able to visit in person (and I live in San Diego so that could have been possible before its demise. 😢), but I love knowing how widely treasured it was and still continues to be so many years after it burned down.

how beautiful and sad at the same time, I love the attention to detail the designers placed in making shopping a destination. The ladies could lunch and shop and enjoy all the amenities. I had worked for Macy's in Herald Square and they kept some of the original details, the wooden escalators are still there. I do hate that Macy's became the company that devoured all the regional department stores like Bullocks and they devoured Burdines in South Florida, they took all the beauty and the special products that were so unique to the regional department stores, filled them with Macy's generic product that is the reason why people have walked away from shopping at Macy's... the biggest mistake they made was to eliminate the special and unique to replace them with the common and predictable.
