    I got 6 of those double sided 32x32 for the price of one Lego single sided. If Lego is not careful they will lose a lot of custom, the competition is surpassing Lego in price massively and is catching up very quickly in terms of quality. Lego best wake up and realise it is not 2012 with the competitions bricks barely able to hold together or so hard to fit you need the pliers, they are now 98% but half the price. I used to be a "Lego Only" man after bad experiences with other makes...now I buy from anyone and rarely am I disappointed.

    Very helpful, thank you!! For my purposes, this helps solve a long -standing problem of building “subterranean” scenes. This makes for a consistently repeatable size, and makes it possible (although probably fairly difficult) to rearrange or replace the modules. Sewer systems, old burial crypts, mines, entrances to the center of the Earth…it’s really a great idea; thanks for bringing this to the table!

    Nice design! Very clever to leave the tops of the columns slightly higher than the top surface, so that the weight is directly on them. Though it occurs to me that you could alternatively make a built-in MILS plate for the top, instead of just a square frame, and then you could set buildings directly on it without needing to first reinforce the base of the building. In any case, I’d suggest 3 minor changes to make it even sturdier: • for each vertical column, instead of (4x) 1x16 Technic Brick, use (3x) 1x16 Technic Brick and (2x) 1x8 Technic Brick. Stagger the bricks so that they overlap and you can lock them together with friction pins in addition to the plates and tiles. • for the last step of enclosing the lower corners, don’t use a 2x4 plate on the top. Instead use a 2x6 plate, and shorten the plate on the topside of the outside of the lower corner to a 2x4 to make room. Right now, that inner brace on the corners is only connected to the outer square of technic bricks on one side, and it’s the side that’s under less force. This would make a solid rectangle all the way around the base of each column. • I would put a technic pin in the middle of each side of both the top and bottom frames when you bring the 4 corner assemblies together. Again, locking the technic bricks together so that it’s not only the plates and tiles holding them together. Again, very nice design, and a clear tutorial.

  • @HenriksBuildingLounge
    @HenriksBuildingLounge19 күн бұрын

    Thanks and thank you for the detailed feedback! 🍻 I agree with all three minor changes for even more strength. As far as the MILS on top goes - this is entirely possible via just copying the bottom layer. I feel like it sort of commits you to filling both the cube AND whatever goes on top in one go instead of keeping things modular. That said, if you take my design and merely swap the top and bottom, it can be used as a crown for a double height cube build with a hollow center, and you'd only build on top of it!

    So I watched it all wondering what use is this grey cube? What is its purpose? Is it so you can build a realistic mountain and not use half a million bricks? Is a train going to run through it? How does it work?...Now I sort of get it, but after measuring, the space inside the cube is not big enough to fit any of my modular buildings. Which is what I thought it was for. What goes inside the cube?

  • @brovideolol3488
    @brovideolol348821 күн бұрын

    This indeed also was my question, I do see the posibillity to make the connection stronger by adding the possibillity to add more technic pins but this also could've been done with two mills plates on top of each other, just as you mentioned, the possibility to add a cave system or subway network underneath the city is possible now with this technique, yet it would cost allot of more parts then raising it with some wood or something else. The reason why you should or can use this style of building seems to be lacking in the video. At least for me.

  • @HenriksBuildingLounge
    @HenriksBuildingLounge21 күн бұрын

    The purpose for this is to fill it with additional buildings - while the modular buildings won't fit, there are many smaller City, Friends, etc buildings that would in their entirety. In the end, I can create a sub-level city with these (though not entirely without modifying them), and possibly caves, tunnels, etc.

    This isn't a set I expect to get but I enjoyed your build/commentary. I know there's a venerated history to the Lego yellow delivery trucks (I think BrickTsar has all of them -- he posted recently). I like the side builds quite a bit. The truck is huge (biggest of its type?). In the Medieval Village set a beard is used as a bird nest -- maybe you can use the extra beard for a bird nest in your city. 😊

  • @HenriksBuildingLounge
    @HenriksBuildingLoungeАй бұрын

    Yeah the truck is long enough for two modular buildings (see the thumbnail), but I love it! I like the bird nest idea, gonna have to find a cozy spot for it sometime...

  • @OutpostMJ
    @OutpostMJАй бұрын

    I can relate. I have a small apartment -- still it is 2BR. Empty nester now but kids' old room I now keep as a guest room for when they visit (and half devoted to shelves for my eBay sales items). I cannot devote an entire room to a city -- a "Lego room" as some folks do -- not even a few tables as those immediately take up most of a room. So: "Shelves City" it is. I do feel overwhelmed and simply have not built much (I have approx 70% of the modulars + all four Ninjago cities + tons of other sets -- all unbuilt). I find it stressful -- as I do with the backlist of movies unwatched/books unread in my digital library. Idk -- I suppose a "good problem" to have? But still stressful. I think this is first of your videos I've ever seen. I just subscribed (lol, but also having trouble keeping up with my KZread subscriptions). Idk. Maybe some of your ideas/techniques will apply to my situation.

  • @HenriksBuildingLounge
    @HenriksBuildingLoungeАй бұрын

    Thanks for subscribing! Your Shelves City is going to be amazing as you build it and integrate the modular and Ninjago buildings into it. Real estate is expensive and like real life cities we have the option to build upward to save space. I like to build Lego to relax - take your time, listen to music, enjoy slowly putting a set or moc together, sometimes over days or weeks. It's not a cheap hobby, so rushing through it will only burn your wallet quicker while burning you out of what you actually want to enjoy. Hope my videos give you ideas or guidance, I have some exciting things coming soon 🍻

    That was so hurtful to watch... Probably the least efficient method to remove dust. Soap works against fat - but does nothing to remove dust. The lime in the water together with all the wet microparticles of dust that will be spilled in all the nooks and crannies of the model will leave a gunky mess. If it's really only just dust: Use a high quality goat hair brush to get rid of the big particles of dust and to agitate the very small, sticky ones. Then use a battery powered dust blower. Takes much much much less time and leaves you with a shiny brand new looking model without the disgusting problems of your method.

  • @HenriksBuildingLounge
    @HenriksBuildingLounge3 ай бұрын

    Wasn't just dust - my city is currently in a dining room... which is next to a kitchen. When the dust is on a very thin layer of food particles and oils that traveled from the stove/hot bowls/hot pot/etc, it takes a little soap to make it actually clean. Also keep in mind the modular building shown hadn't been cleaned or dusted in over 5 years while at that location. I agree with your approach if it's really just dust.

    Seems like it's still the plan - a lot of newer sets are built on regular plates where they would almost certainly have normally come with baseplates, including larger buildings like the Home Alone house, the Lion Knights' Castle, Rivendell, etc.

  • @aljazslemc9569
    @aljazslemc95692 ай бұрын

    Modulars have to keep to baseplates, if they're to stay compatible with older. Versions. I don't really see them phasing those out. And it seems like they should start by replacing their baseplate offerings with 32×32 plates, so people can seemingly adaptIf it stays roughly at the same price point, people can convertt, or continue buying used.

  • @Dave83138
    @Dave831382 ай бұрын

    @@HenriksBuildingLounge IMO sets that open up can't rely on a standard baseplate unless they put in a bunch of tiles to support it or they want more of a rounded / stylized / jagged edge. Just because a lot of larger newer sets aren't built on baseplates to me doesn't automatically mean they are getting rid of them. It may just be a design style now or the larger sets need the greater stability that stacked regular plates provide. I recently bought and built the Mos Eisley Cantina, there is zero chance that thing would stay together on baseplates given how it opens up along with it's size, plus the rounded / angled plates give it a much more interesting look. I would argue that for kids with a large container of random parts the baseplate is still essential.
