    @@danpreston564 so good, my wifey has just started going to a synth class recently and is wanting to get into modular, I’m thinking Barp 2600 is a great way to start, is it a steep learning curve?

  • @danpreston564
    @danpreston5642 жыл бұрын

    @@Jin-Hu I guess it depends on what you are used to. Many people find it really confusing because they are used to modern synths, whilst the 2600 comes from a time before all the standards were set. Lots of people can’t even get it to stop making a drone when they first get it! But it’s a great teaching synth, it was used to teach a lot in the 70s. Is it a good gateway into modular? I guess so, I stay away from Modular as I don’t have unlimited time, space and money. But it is the closest I have to a modular as that’s how it was designed. The curve can be pretty steep, but there are loads of great teaching videos out there, by Starsky Carr or Ralph Baumgartl especially, that will get you through the first, confusing hours. It’s a lot of synth for the money.

    One question, just curious, do you like more the behringer 2600 or the sub 37? I know they’re completely different synths, but I wanted to know how they are based purely on flavor, presence, ability to sound raw and aggressive.

  • @danpreston564
    @danpreston5642 жыл бұрын

    Hard to answer. To my ears the raw oscillators are very similar. Maybe a touch more presence in the Moog, but it’s sometimes hard to totally open the 2600 filter to get all the overtones to sound. From a sound design perspective I think I prefer the 2600. I like the opportunities the layout gives you. If the question comes down to which one spends more time switched on, it’s the 2600.

    You can’t save patches, you start from fresh every time. It’s part of the joy. I’m not sure about the other question. I’d need to know a bit more detail about the set up you want to use. You want to go keyboard > MPC > 2600?

    Convinced me! I am getting one. Is the duophonic mode like in the poly d? As 1 osc per voice?

  • @danpreston564
    @danpreston5643 жыл бұрын

    Kind of. You set the voice mode to duo and patch the 'upper voice' jack to the CV in of any one, or more, of the oscillators. So with 3 oscillators and a ring mod, each tuned how you like, you can mix it up a bit. The top note you play will trigger the oscillator(s) you have patched in.

    I did put captions on the video and then took them off again. It’s 3 oscillators, 1 tuned an octave down. The LFO is going both to filter mod and to a ring mod input. The other ring mod input is taken from the saw wave of VCO3. The sample and hold is clocked to the LFO and instead of sampling from the noise source it’s sampling the audio rate wave of VCO3. It’s set to Duophonic mode and single trigger, so the envelopes won’t retrigger as long as a key is pressed down. The sound is mostly just coming from the filter, being modulated by the LFO and the adsr, with the ring mod very quiet in the background and a rhythmic modulation coming from the sample and hold affecting the pulse width of VCO1. That’s about it.
