Back in the day, I was taught to use a credit card since everyone was likely to have one on them, but only tape 3 sides so that air can escape. This more closely mimics the vented chest seal, is there a reason it is recommended to tape all sides?
@MyMedic23 күн бұрын
It's recommended to tape all sides because if you don't, you risk more air entering the wound. For air escaping the puncture, you should 'burp' the improvised chest seal so that the air doesn't go back in.

Again, sorry about the comments earlier. What I was trying to get at with this is that Chest Seals are going the way of the Dodo Bird. By using a chest seals you actually have more of a chance of causing a tension pneumothorax than preventing one. There are a lot of studies out there on chest seals and open chest wounds however very few studies actually look at the whether or not a seal is needed in the first place. The chances of dying from a sucking chest wound are very slim however when you apply a seal the chances increase. We are now finding that Chest Seals are an outdated medical practice that can actually cause more harm than good so it’s better to stay away from them.

How can a chest seal cause pneumothorax?
@Stitches-to8df23 күн бұрын
@@RokerSMisisipi latests studies are showing that sucking chest wounds vent themselves and my sealing them off we are now preventing that. Yes, vented chests seals mitigate that however they are overall pointless and increase the chances of a pneumothorax so it’s just better to leave them alone. The sound of sucking and blowing from an open chest wound is the sound of breathing so why mess with it? Some say that if the open wound is over half the diameter of the trachea then you should seal it but considering that a adults trachea is anywhere from 10-27mm it’s impossible to know what that would be (and that was a study done on just 818 people). Overall if the only wound someone has is a sucking chest wound that doesn’t get sealed they chance of mortality is extremely low (3%) however if a seal is placed and does not allow it to vent or the person forgets to “burp” we will induce a pneumothorax in which the chance of mortality jumps to 98% so why mess with it? Chest seals were a concept developed in the 40’s and we haven’t gotten away from them yet but I’m sure we will in due time since we are finding out we are doing more harm than good, like backboarding spinal injuries….
@Stitches-to8df2 ай бұрын
Eh, Chest seals are not a good idea.
@MyMedic2 ай бұрын
They're a great idea because they prevent air from entering the torso! If air gets inside the chest cavity, it can not only collapse your lungs but also put dangerous and potentially lethal pressure on your heart! A vented chest seal is even better than an unvented one because it can release any air that's already made its way into your body.
@Stitches-to8df2 ай бұрын
@@MyMedic Actually the Jury is out, we are finding that we could be doing more harm than good now. Sucking chest wounds are more of a distracting injury than anything since they are rarely fatal. By placing a Chest Seal we have the huge potential to create a Tension Pneumothorax due to the fact that we are covering a hole that is actually allowing it to vent. If you go over the studies there are many on what type of Chest Seal works best but very very little on if they are even needed in the first place. The debate now is on whether or not we use one on a sucking chest wound with a hole over a certain diameter but even then it is looking like it does not matter. Now when I am teaching students, I do go over them since the curriculum requires it however I let them know its an outdated practice that could cause more harm than good and focus more on Tension Pneumothorax's and needle decompression, leave sucking chest wounds alone. Emergency Medicine changes constantly so its important to stay up to date on all of the recent studies coming out and new practices. Chest Seals are actually going to go the way of the Dodo bird I believe and having this kind of content out there could get somebody killed. Appreciate your content though!

These blister strips are made of the same material as our SuperSkin bandages and will definitely stay attached so long as you apply them correctly (flattened down without any rolls or wrinkles). You can also take a look into our SuperSkin Mega Roll if you're going to be using them often. Same thing but a giant roll of SuperSkin that you can cut to the exact size and shape you need (just be sure to round out the edges so they don't catch and stick them down flat). I personally use this all the time for everything from hiking to heels. If you fall a lot during socker too, you can apply this to those areas as well to protect them from turf burn.

Use one hand to pinch the outside of the glove near the wrist and pull it off, then hook your thumb from your glove free hand inside the remaining glove and pull it off. Any small garbage is now balled up inside one inside out glove which is inside the other inside out glove. This keeps external glove contamination on the inside of the ball, and off of your hands.
