    Some people have bats that need pins to hold them on the wheel head. Adding the bat pins allows you to attach and remove these kinds of bats quickly and easily.

    3 pin power connector going into the board is a dumb idea. Water could easily get into the unit and short it out. Much better with the older model where the cord is sealed into the board.

  • @expertclay
    @expertclay20 күн бұрын

    Yeah, they probably should have at least made it connect underneath. I'm sure it was a cost saving idea. I wonder if there is a way to seal it or put some kind of shield around it to keep the water out.

  • @expertclay

    Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the rough surface. I tried a throwing cloth which I found on amazon but it didn't quite keep the clay in one place. I have another video that shows how to add bat pins so you can use a bat. You may be able to throw a slab of clay and stick a bat to that. Those are the only ideas I've come up with so far.

    Sorry, I missed this comment earlier. I use a good solid wood workbench that I have covered in cotton canvas and stapled down. Bought this same wheel last month because it had a lot of good reviews. Unfortunately, the wheel head is off-centered and wobbling. VEVOR's customer service is the worst I have ever encountered. Their website says 30-day no-hassle returns, but getting a new wheel has been the biggest hassle ever! Their first reply was for me to wait 3 weeks for a repair kit so that I could fix it myself. We've gone back and forth several times and each time they refuse to let me return the wheel - they keep upping the incentive to keep it. So far they're giving me $125 to keep it. Does anyone know how to fix it? I have no idea and now I'm stuck with an off-centered pottery wheel.

    Good review. Some operations require a really slow speed - I wonder if it can do this with usable torque? Presumably the metal parts and wheel head are earthed. Personally I would check earth continuity before using the wheel. I wonder what type of bearings they use. Is there much deflection if you put pressure on the outer edge of the wheel. However, as you say, you get what you pay for...

    I also got this wheel. The back shelf proportions are disappointing, so I will build an extension shelf for it. The speed is great, but does bog down like you showed, it recovers quickly when the friction reduces.. we threw about 6lbs, centered with 2 3lb chunks. I will use this primarily for smaller work and it’s great for trimming. Bat pins are an easy addition. For the price it can do a lot of work and lowers the barrier of entry into the craft.

    I have a slightly different version of this and the reverse is for right handed. I hadn't thrown in almost 10 years and at first I was so confused as to why I kept ending up with my finger jabbing through my pots 😅 Once I realized I was throwing in the wrong direction I had to laugh at myself. Mine is shorter so it's propped up on cinderblocks. My splash pan covers the entire top and is only as tall as the wheelhead but it leaks easily. However I've thrown on one of those $20 plastic tabletop toy wheels for kids before, so you use what you've got.

    So the creases left over where the “horns” of the rams head are, when you throw that down on a wheel, that doesn’t trap air?

  • @davezad
    @davezad11 ай бұрын

    This is possible if your technique is wrong. So long as both hands firmly grip the side of the lump, those ridges don't get large enough to trap air. If your ram shape splays out too wide the wedging will fail. When done correctly there is a point when you can tell the clay has been wedged enough, so at the end you adjust your folding - make smaller and smaller turns until the lump goes from a cylinder/ramshead to a ball shape. At that end it should be one smooth surface with no creases. I always rotate the side that was on my left hand to be the top, so the spiral that was wedged into the clay is in the proper orientation for right-handed (counterclockwise) throwing. Also, you never want to slam a lump of clay down on the wheelhead. I know a lot of potters do this, and it looks dramatic, but it's not a good idea because often you'll put it down way off-center and then have to fight it back to the middle. So the process is much easier the more on center it is when you start. Ramshead is a good option for people with large hands. My fingers always feel like they get in the way when I try spiral wedging. Never could get the knack of it.
