I always love to listen to Alex Riel, Stuff Smith , Kenny Drew, and Niels, the jam was great and there Alex showed his master class drumming abilities as a young man I think at age 25, 1965 at Jazzhus Montmartre Copenhagen. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4OWuamgn5zfeKg.htmlsi=UUiMb2jYH2yOTavA I hope Alex Riel can also tell us more about his encounter with Stuff Smith and Kenny Drew in a video. Keep on living , hoping him long life.

All three of the Detroit, Michigan (by way of Pontiac, Michigan) Elvin, That and Hank were brilliant and absolutely unique and original innovative stylists. That being said, That was a triple threat by being an amazing and fresh sounding jazz Trumpet master, he was a genius at composing and orchestrating. It's never more evident than with this masterpiece of his, 61st and Rich it" This is an incredible work and a true masterpiece of genius by Thad that is harmonically sophisticated and swings like a bitch!! Hats off to one of the finest composers and arrangers to me of all time. Thad was always at the very top for me, along with Tadd Dameron, Billy Strayhorn, Bill Lee, Oliver Nelson, Ernie Wilkins and a few others

This is a really intimate performance. I am a bass player so I am drawn to it. Your bassist was very economical, yet soulful. Loved his note selection and tone. Oh and that pianist is ok too... I guess.😉

I was there. I was in the MJF High School All-Star Band that played Sunday afternoon. What great jazz we heard that weekend. John Lewis, Bily Taylor, Buddy Rich, Pointer Sisters, Carmen McCrae, Modern Jazz Quartet, Clark Terry. An afternoon of blues with Big Bill Broonzy, Cleanhead Vinson and Bo Diddley. And Thad and Mel on Sunday night. Didn't know a recording of it had survived. Great to hear it again.
