Chris and Charlie's Adventures

Chris and Charlie's Adventures

We're Chris and Charlie. At the start of the year we moved to Shetland, the UK's most remote islands, off the North East coast of Scotland. Join us for our first year in Shetland, as we take on a house in disrepair and try to tackle an exceptionally exposed garden that regularly experiences gale force winds. We'll also film our adventures across the islands as we explore the area we can now call home.

Saturdays - re-releasing videos from our Appalachian Trail thru-hike attempt.

    Interesting video. What a shame you had to introduce cats to the area. Once they have gained confidence in their surroundings they’ll range far and wide - and probably make short work of any nesting birds and chicks. Nice one.

    @@sallynolan5928 they're both rescue cats that we've had for 4-5 years and they've always been house cats. A big part of that decision for us was around the wildlife protection, so we have no intention to let them out.

    Well, if you were trimming a football pitch or croquet court that mower would be perfect. You’re in for nothing but frustration with your garden though. A mower with 4, 6” wheels would be much more suited for your field cutting. Best of luck!

    Enjoying from California your Shetland adventures. If you'd cut it short with a strimmer, then put in a pen around that garden area and kept chickens in it, you'd not have had any work left after a couple of weeks, and it would have been fertilized, to boot!

    Hello.. I just watched your April chanel and then watched Jan Feb & March... This is quite an undertaking in a windy, almost barrem, beautiful place. Not sure why you moved here, whether you are keeping sheep, or just looking for a quieter life in the Shetlands. I wish you well in your new adventure, and will keep watching for the progress to come.

    Good wishes of happiness & success to you - I'm A Brit from London, now that I'm 84 I do not go anywhere much, but watching other people's adventures is very satisfying. I've done a lot of similar projects to yours over my long life, love fixing up houses, and making gardens, so I will be enjoying this from the US where I've been for 35+ years now. Used to holiday in North Wales over many years when my kids were young, & always loved a streak of the raw, old-fashioned life to make one aware of how hard things were at one time. It's very good for the soul ! Remind yourself of that when it seems too hard on occasion - we can always get a shot of civilization to keep us in balance - in the old days they had to endure the cold & raw life thru all their years ! I remember 'chilblains' when I was a kid in London - damp, drafts & coal fires was quite normal & 'chilblains' was the result in winter. Look it up if you are too young to know what they are ! Best of luck in your endeavors !

    Sounds like you've had some difficult setbacks..and at the worst time of year! I hope things start improving for you now and that the warmer weather will help. It would be nice to know a little of your back story if you don't mind sharing? Why Shetland? I assume you had visited the island before you moved there? What made you choose Shetland? Where were you living before? What sort of work does your husband [?] do? Stuff like that..and you have a little one too. It'll be a lovely place for your family to grow up, there's a good community spirit on Shetland I think. We had one of the nicest holidays ever in Shetland, and if we were younger we may have made the same decision you did.😁

    Nice video. That mower is a beast. I wouldn't want to fight with it. We have had so much rain that my garden is still delayed until it is dry enough to rototill it and get a few trailer loads of horse manure composte from a neighbor. Please pull all of the nails out of the boards that you have laying down. When Iwas a kid, I fell onto a board with a nail sticking out. when I got up, the board was nailed to my hip. My Dad had to pull it off of me. I don't want that to happen to any of you. Good Luck, Rick

    Very good video. Unfortunately your microphone is crackling a tiny bit. That could be that it is voice activated instead of being on all of the time. You need some kind of heater that doesn't need electricity nor oil. I hope that you have a carbon monoxide detector. The first couple of years will be a lot of work getting things the way you want. Be patient. Good Luck, Rick

    Just looking at the shoulder straps. It seems there isn't much breathable padding used to allow more air on hot summer days. What's your experience with it? Also wondering if the hip pockets are waterproof?

  • @ChrisandCharliesAdventures
    @ChrisandCharliesAdventures Жыл бұрын

    It's not as breathable as the Osprey packs, but we haven't taken it out on particularly hot days. We've mostly been out with it on mild, drizzly Welsh days. The hip pockets are fine in drizzle, but you'd probably want more waterproofing if the rain is particularly heavy and you were using them for your phone etc.

    @@ChrisandCharliesAdventures Thanks for the reply! My current climbing pack (BD speed 22) has straps outside between the two ice tools for crampons, a feature I really like. They often get too much ice/snow formed on them so putting them inside can be a bit messy. I was planning on buying a bigger pack. Trion Spine looks awesome, except for this lack! Great review though!

    Soumen Deb yeh we have little bags for our crampons, which are ok but a bit of a tight squeeze to get them back in.
