    Very nice video. A little digression, but I drive a 987 Boxster S and would like to know your gearing technique on turn 11 at Thunderhill.

    Thunderhill East? Haven't driven that in a while, but as far as I remember you downshift to 2nd for turn 10 yiu stay in 2nd and then you (almost) hit the limiter before 11, you take 11 in 2nd gear and then you try to take 12 as flat as possible while upshifting

    Lines literally the easiest and most over rated part of driving. Going fast has little to do with the racing line. It is all about being able to take the tires to the limit consistently without going over. Stop worrying about the lines...and worry about going faster around the corners. If your lines are wrong...you will figure it out in about 2 laps.

    Track day drivers sometimes want to play race car driver. HPDE is all about how to drive safely at speed in close proximity to others. The best attitude to have is if someone is faster than you, just back-off a bit on the straight and let them by. You might learn something by trying to keep up. Pretending to be a racer just gets people pissed and causes accidents. If you want to race, get good enough to be part of a race group and learn the proper way to race. This was a good pass in a race, but a mistake in HPDE (in my opinion).

    The other driver was trying to stay on the line. You need to wait until you can pass safely. The basic rule is the passee needs to stay on line. It's HPDE so you have to expect these things..

  • @yeedle79
    @yeedle793 жыл бұрын

    I'd say both are a**holes. It's HPDE and open passing means open passing when safe. You could have waited until you got onto the straight where you would have easily passed him.

  • @EdgarLauRacing
    @EdgarLauRacing3 жыл бұрын

    Always set up for the inside to pass. Jinking left and right isn't the best practice especially in HPDE. It would be an ok move in racing but the poor guy is trying his best to drive the line. Cut him some slack.

  • @influxd5117

    It's an open track day. If and when someone comes up behind you, you let them pass (and preferably point them by). Guy in front could have easily let him by during turn 8a or 9.

    You’re not in the wrong. He technically stole your line the turn before you made the pass.

    What you did what fine. I would have done the same. Have video of something not dissimilar between 9 and 10, but that driver was a racer and a grown up so there was no complaining.

    Thank You very much for your kind comments. I have to admit that - 11 years - later I am a bit embarrassed about my slow laptimes in the video, but I am super happy that the video is still helpful. The greatest thing is for me when I meet people at the track who tell me "hey I learned Laguna-Seca with your video" (find me, I now drive a meteor-grey 997 but still with number 179) - that always makes my day. Haven't been to track at all this year due to COVID, but hopefully I'll be back next year.

    is it 987? How do you check oil temp?

  • @ChrisZang
    @ChrisZang4 жыл бұрын

    No it is a 997.2, meaning that I have an oil temp gauge in my dashboard HOWEVER: IT is very inaccurate (reads too high), because of that I am reading oil temp by using an AIM Solo-DL. In order to get the oil temp you need to connect it to the CAN bus. Here is an article on 986forum in which I describe how I installed an oil temp sensor and gauge in a 986: 986forum.com/forums/boxster-racing-forum/33994-oil-temp-sensor.html maybe that also works on a 987

    Christopher: Thanks so much for such a thorough and thoughtful intro to MLSR. Last Sunday (3/27) was my first time at the track and I was a little apprehensive about my skill level, having only driven ThunderHill in the past. Your video clips were very helpful in familiarizing me with the turns so that i was able to drive the course with a much higher level of control and confidence. Your clips played a big part in my enjoyment of the track.

    Hello Christopher, and thanks for posting these videos. I have never lapped at Laguna Seca, so my question is somewhat academic. I hope you will indulge me. Regarding turn 2, you drive very deep in and take a late single apex. I have seen other videos that show drivers treating T2 as a double apex; notably Marc Gene's 1:05:78 in a Ferrari F1 car. OK so maybe higher downforce car can do this better, but I also notice low downforce cars taking double apex. Have you compared the two approaches in your car, and what do you find? Thank you again.
