    Sam Harris is very respectful individual who is mostly curious and take things subjectively. I disagree with his views about Islam's perspective on jihad. Individuals cannot take law in their own hands, otherwise there will be bloodshed of innocent people, thats exactly happening, used by extermists. There is more discussion needed, i hope Sam harris, research it bit more and look at it more holistically.

    I love Dr. Sam Harris, but I am kind of disappointed with this podcast. 😞 First, instead of focusing on the 2015 Chapel Hill shooting, he, in effect, uses the tragedy as a pretense to peddle his previously tried (and frankly old) arguments against the various faith traditions. 🤔 Second, Harris fails to recognize that even though atheism itself--at least as defined as the lack of belief in God--is undoubtedly incapable of causing an individual to murder people of faith, contempt for faith, if exacerbated by stress--such as the parking dispute presumably at issue of the tragedy--could conceivably factor into Hicks to murder the Muslim dental students. 👆Third, Harris fails to acknowledge any possibility that the Islamic terrorists' claims of allegiance to ISIS may well, in some cases, be spurious, i.e. they are acting out of a need for an unrealistic sense of superiority (grandiosity), perhaps more so than out of a need to adhere to the sacred texts of their faith.

    sometimes i wish there were (automatically created) transcripts of the videos, as there are parts which seem particularly useful for propagation in (digital) text form as an alternative. noting something said manually is quite tedious with the current slow input mechanisms. youtubes subtitles work quite well in principle but it does not insert any punctuation which makes it just be a long string of words which is very difficult to read. text still has the benefit of being all on the screen at once and having an exceptionally low data size and processing cost.

    Its your word (sam ) aginst these people words...here are some of the great non-muslims personals through history disagreeing with sam! M.K.Gandhi, YOUNG INDIA, 1924 "...I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and his own mission. These, and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every trouble." YOUNG INDIA, 1924 Annie Besant, The Life and Teachings of Muhammad, Madras 1932, p. 4: "It is impossible for anyone who studies the life and character of the great Prophet of Arabia, who knows how he taught and how he lived, to feel anything but reverence for that mighty Prophet, one of the great messengers of the Supreme. And although in what I put to you I shall say many things which may be familiar to many, yet I myself feel whenever I re-read them, a new way of admiration, a new sense of reverence for that mighty Arabian teacher." George Bernard Shaw - The Genuine Islam Vol.No.8, 1936. “I believe if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring much needed peace and happiness. I have studied him - the man and in my opinion is far from being an anti-Christ. He must be called the Savior of Humanity. I have prophesied about the faith of Mohammad that it would be acceptable the Europe of tomorrow as it is beginning to be acceptable to the Europe of today.” Lamartine - Histoire de la Turquie, Paris 1854, Vol II, pp. 276-77: "If greatness of purpose, smallness of means, and astounding results are the three criteria of human genius, who could dare to compare any great man in modern history with Muhammad? " Montgomery Watt, Mohammad at Mecca, Oxford 1953, p. 52: "His readiness to undergo persecutions for his beliefs, the high moral character of the men who believed in him and looked up to him as leader, and the greatness of his ultimate achievement - all argue his fundamental integrity. To suppose Muhammad an impostor raises more problems than it solves. Moreover, none of the great figures of history is so poorly appreciated in the West as Muhammad."

    The think is when it comes to the word of islam soo many people would suggest its a religion path for only muslims, no it isnt, the word islam means two thing peace and to summit to the will of God, if you believe in God or Allah in Arabic than you following the right path and it's for everyone, Muslim means the one who summits to the will of God that's it, forget about Isis and all those rubbish things..., mankind are always killers and even if ... Religion wasn't their ... They would still rage on wars against each other simply because everyone has emotions and some days it goes up way way up and sometimes down like really depression state and you can experience that by just reading a news paper or just watching the tv, what I am saying in here is the media controls our emotions and that's how it works..., not everyone is knowledgeable and intelligent some are some not, those who understand can sometimes control over their emotions ...

    "If martyrdom is seen as the highest religious calling, then a reasonable expectation would be that the people with the most knowledge about Islamic law (Shariah) would desire to carry out these operations with greater frequency,". However, despite the religious justification that IS uses for suicide missions, "Those with the most religious knowledge within the organization itself are the least likely to volunteer to be suicide bombers," the study found. Why then if religious 'belief' is the catalyst for violence does it not translate into action?. Why are the most ignorant the embodiment of what it means to be a 'true-believer' of Islam?. bigstory.ap.org/article/9f94ff7f1e294118956b049a51548b33/islamic-state-gets-know-nothing-recruits-and-rejoices

    The ideas of martyrdom and jihad within islam is not controversial, and its not a secret. Any honest person that looks at the religion will see these ideas, and the manifestation of them throughout the world, on every continent save Antartica. What I'm still grappling with is the "lefts" general refusal to understand this. How can people watch children being raped and murdered, then excuse the very ideology that drives it? Leftists arent stupid, and they arent ignorant, and they arent evil. So what gives? I understand radical islam, but I can not understand the left and their capitulation to islamic demands for sharia. I generally think that defeating islamic jihad is impossible without first defeating the leftists that defend islam. And the first act to defeating these leftists is to understand them. And I can not.

    You know, Islam would be the easiest religion to fix, since they run on the whole idea that a later revelation, a later text updates or overwrites an older one. We just need an islamic leader declaring that you don't go to heaven through martyrdom, that Jihad is not a thing and that women are people. Of course, that would probably lead to a schism and a conflict between other brands of Islam, but one step at a time.

    Muhammad was a brilliant conqueror. He learned quite early in life that the easy thing to conquer in men is their minds, not their bodies. 1,400 years after his death, he continues to conquer people who don't share his ideology. All the while, his god remains invisible. As combinations of qualities go, he was clearly the most brilliant, influential, _and_ evil man to ever exist.

    You were doing fine until you started to denigrate Christianity likley to make it appear you give all religions the same dismissal. Islam is itself a major, if not greatest problem to mankind, especially when you start to examine it and realize it is a mishmash of poorly and incorrectly plagerized religious text and therefore cannot be valid on any religious grounds. Then it must be treated for what it is: Nazism with a god made in the appearance of religion, and so cleverly crafted that it enslaves all who enter and believe, and poses eternal danger to all who never do. Giving it any special treatment as religion is doing mankind the greatest disservice because by lessening its threat you are emboldening it and giving it some holy credence rather than dealing with it as an outright lie and universal eternal danger that must be fully exposed, fought, and eliminated.

But respectfully, I feel you may be going overboard in your overall refusal to join forces with them. I would argue it is possible to ally with the religious folks here in the west in correctly identifying the threats of violent Islam as well as the cultural contradictions, while at the same time steering clear of the more extreme elements that do exist. And this comes from a self-described agnostic, libertarian-conservative such as myself.

    Harris may have changed his mind slightly on that point since the recording of this video. He has said more recently that he would vote for Ben Carson over Noam Chomsky, because at least Carson could be counted on to understand the threat of political Islam. At the same time, he described Carson as a dangerously deluded religious lunatic (or something similar to that), so it may have been more of a statement about how horribly confused Chomsky is when it comes to this issue.

    The problem with Sam's reasoning is: there is not a realistic way in the real world that we can build a massive public sentiment against Islam as being inherently negative but not allow that to convert into expressions of hatred against Muslims that are doing nothing wrong and don't share these negative ideas. And once we start oppressing and attacking the Muslims that aren't doing anything wrong it will be too easy to push them further right were they will start to agree with anti-western views and can become radicalized. America has a large plethora and an illustrious history of people that simply are racist bigots, these people do not need any poll data or negative doctrines to hate Muslims they will simply hate them because they are different, they view the difference as the threat not the doctrines. And this can be proven with how they have treated black people and Hispanics. Although Sam's evaluation is not flawed, the outcome is putting bullets in a gun and handing that gun to someone that so desperately wants to start shooting people.

  • @razzle_dazzle
    @razzle_dazzle8 жыл бұрын

    I think the answer lies in how we describe the problem of Islam. We need be consistently clear that we are criticizing specific ideas contained within Islam, and that when we do condemn individuals, we are condemning Jihadists and Islamists, not Muslims. If people find this confusing, we can only restate it until it becomes clear. I don't think we need to build public sentiment that Islam is "inherently negative". As true as that may be, there are pragmatic concerns which you accurately highlight. I think that our message needs to be more specific - that Islam needs a reformation and that the reformers within the Islamic world are the people we should be supporting the most. With our position stated in those terms, I don't think we need to worry about it overlapping with expressions of reactionary hatred. I think your view of how easily Muslims could be radicalized is an example of "the soft bigotry of low expectations" (a term which originated from the right). We cannot hold Muslims to a lower standard than everyone else. We must be clear that they need to embrace ideas like freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Nothing less is good enough; there can be no excuses or exceptions.

    aroseland1 Yeah, I wasn't denying that the phenomenon you described exists. But the question is: Was it caused by Sam Harris or the mainstream media? The depictions of Muslims in the media have hardly been flattering. I think Sam, more than anyone, has been especially careful about how he describes the problem. After all, he knows what it's like to be misrepresented. As I mentioned, he has consistently said that we need to support people who are trying to reform Islam from within. He has even co-published a book with a Muslim reformist. I don't think attitudes such as those of john vines can be blamed on Sam or his fans. I mean, I'm assuming John saw my comment echoing Sam's views, and didn't agree with (and/or understand) it. Maybe Sam's message is somehow lost on certain people. They might agree with the statement that Islam needs a reformation, but believe a reformation to be impossible, and so come to the conclusion that Islam must be eliminated. Although, I don't know how people could fail to see that an attempt to "eliminate" Islam would lead to World War III.

  • @aroseland1
    @aroseland18 жыл бұрын

    daz7887 I think it would be a great idea to send out a very specific and paramterized message about the negative pats of Islam, but to believe that the message wont, almost immediately be spun into a general justification for hatred, bigotry and racism (against middle eastern/arabs) is naive if the general population was as logical and reasonable and as fact-based as Sam that would work just fine. But the general populations is an emotionally driven mob, a pack animal, people are completely susceptible to being spun into intense fear and anxiety of a bogy man who wants to get you (a certain percent of the population at least). This is human nature, an annalistic instinct left over from the past of our evolution. If we feed that desire it will continue to devour.
