A bit late getting to this but it's a wonderful video. I think it will mean a lot to your son. I think the handle on the Norlund was a replacement since it looked like it was made for an American boy's axe eye. The Norlund Canadiene is a Canadian pattern and they usually have a Canadian eye, which is bigger. If you're looking to replace that handle, one from Ochsenkopf for their Iltis Canada should fit and they are probably available in the US somewhere.

I'm sure he'll enjoy his axe one day. Funny story, last month I tried to introduce my 5 yo son to axes for the first time. Mainly just letting him watch me chop, but I did let him try and hold it. It was the CT boys axe. Of course I put the leather mask back on because the bit is unforgivingly sharp to just hand it to a small child. And eventhough I said DON'T SWING IT, the FIRST thing he did when I gave it to him was smack it on the stump on the bit. He wasn't strong enough for it to cut through the stitching in the welt fortunately. Moral of story, make sure the boy is old enough to use the axe before you give it to him!

Awesome axe. I have a pile of them. The pancake is a term they were given in recent years because they are so flat. That are mostly old Connecticut patterns with worn heal and toes. They have the tapered poll like most Connie’s and if you look into bevel designs it’s likely one of 2 bevel designs either the Henry C Reynolds bevel or the Underhill Bevel which are both from here in New Hampshire. Not to say they are all made here but the general design was patented here

That axe is awesome. I've seen them called "Pennsylvania pancakes" on line but the old settler axes in Ontario were pretty much the same. I have one from an old mill site near me that is sadly too far gone to hang. There's a book I have called Axe Making in Ontario in the Settlement Period by Gary French and most of the examples are hewing axes. The author explains that there were way more chopping axes made than hewing axes but hewing axes just lasted longer and were more likely to get resteeled when they wore out or repaired when they were damaged because they were more expensive. Chopping axes just got used until they were worn out and then ended their lives as splitting wedges before getting eventually being lost or recycled as scrap. Because of that, there are very few surviving examples.

That turned out great. I have a very similar axe although I think it started its life out as a Dayton pattern. Its supper pitted with a mushroomed pole and rounded toe. So much character. Cool comparison. I have had problems with CT hangs they had huge shelves and loosened immediately the wedges were also inadequate. That’s not a deal breaker we’re all capable of sanding the shelf off and re wedging. There is part of the difference. The fit and finish. You can buy comparable axes like some agdor and Husqvarna axes that are made with the same process but lack the attention to detail. They are priced accordingly closer to CT and make amazing work axes. The actual edge difference comes down to grind angle and profile. 20 degree is going to have issues if u hit aluminum where the Ct is probably 25 and will take more abuse. I love all axes but I do like my GBA Scandinavian forest axe as a user and it carries very nice in the woods

I would love to see a video about turning a bike saddle bag into an axe sheath.

I’d love to get a seven pines forge axe they aren’t cheap though. I’m sure they’re worth every penny I just can’t swing that right now

It's understandable they are pricy but compared to say a liam Hoffmann they are a budget friendly option it just takes some work to get the handle to your liking but the quality of steel and forging is great
