Kernotex

This channel is an outlet for my experience with Linux (and other tech related subjects). I decided to do this to give back to the wider community. If you've found something useful here please comment as such. I'd love to hear how you found it helpful. Subscribe to my channel and get to hear about my latest videos when I publish them.

Producing new content takes a lot of my time and I try to answer as many queries as possible. Unfortunately I am unable to respond as quickly (if at all) to questions as I once was. Please don't feel offended if I am slow to reply or you get no reply at all. If you are stuck and in desperate need for assistance, it may be quicker to seek help from official help channels (that will certainly be more knowledgeable than me!), e.g LFS, Gentoo, Ubuntu, etc.

    The single biggest question I have right now is....are you talking about OpenZFS or Oracle ZFS and what are the actual differences?

  • @Kernotex

    As the title of the series suggests it's just about ZFS in general. I didn't want to commit to a particular implementation, though through necessity my demonstrations in later videos are based on OpenZFS in Gentoo.

    so it could be a version mismatch where if you work out the depends tree and emerge as a emptytree should fix its if it built in the first place it would be there especially being something rather up there like gwenview ive ***haaaad that happen but it's nothing that didn't work itself out but that's pretty amazing someone figured out how to do that just another measure of control over something elsewise we wouldn't see is it can be qts version llvms version qmakes version gccs version clangs version anything literally because they flip and flop switches each different releases they do i got one though its ha ha we get vulkan they don't

    why did you create a file system of type ext4 in the boot partition while they recommend ext2 for boot in the book ?

  • @Kernotex
    @KernotexАй бұрын

    Personal preference. My idea is that the boot files are critical to getting the system started so I try to mitigate any potential hazards: 1. I prefer to have a separate boot partition and not automount it ('noauto' in fstab) so those files are 'hidden' except when required by performing a manual mount. 2. ext3/4 are journalled file systems whereas ext2 is not. In the event of an unsafe dismount of the boot partition or something else unexpected happens, a file system check will replay the journal and more often than not it does a good job of putting the file system back to a sane state. ext2 has no such protection. The only downside is that the journal occupies what would otherwise be free space but given the usual boot partition size and the cheap cost of storage (for that size partition at least) it's not even worth worrying about.

    You could install to a USB storage device and mount that as the $LFS partition if you didn't want to make changes to your system disk. I covered building LFS on a bootable USB here: kzread.info/head/PLyc5xVO2uDsCCsisiiWrZJgnHmK18Mr7j Or use a live CD/USB to boot from and used GParted to shrink your /dev/sdb3 partition but make sure you have backups in case this goes wrong. Then create a new /dev/sdb4 with the space you have left.

    If you're still using Windows in 2024 there's something wrong with you. I'm not even spouting fan boy nonsense. I'm talking about things like Recall, and Microsofts persistent spyware. I had to swallow a melon, and ditch the software I relied on in Windows. People need to make a stand, and educate others on why they shouldn't be using Windows today (or any platform that abuses private data). Other than that, fantastic series. I'm following along with the documentation. Very helpful videos.

    Yeah I’m gonna have to disagree, I think what your saying is totally valid and I really love Linux and using Linux too but the all have pros and cons. Linux is super amazing (dare I say the best) but it can seem daunting to someone just coming into it, macOS is super high powered but it’s locked in a paywall, windows is super easy to use for some people but it’s bloatware and spyware. What I’m saying is that there’s nothing really wrong with someone who’s using windows (and I’m saying this as a Linux user) because in a lot of cases people get super scared of change or, in my experience, really just don’t know any alternative. Saying stuff like that really just pushes people away in my opinion because it makes them defensive about windows

    @@user-oc5qq8hd7zWell it’s logical for us to release some anger towards people (even tho it’s not right) mainly because they are the reason open-source and safe software, free of bloat is not existent, because they keep feeding the big corporations money and most software is not available to Linux because of that (Because it’s not profitable for the company). Emulation tools like Wine have advanced significantly and most of the apps that someone would want to use are available, but there’s always that one pesky app that isn’t available or isn’t working correctly and ect. I don’t know, I just feel like if people weren’t so scared of a little terminal that at this point they don’t even need to touch corporations wouldn’t have got that much advantage of off them
