Which ones get sold and which ones don't? Why? And when they do get sold, is it so they can breed again or for human consumption? How much do they sell for? I saw a video of some guy selling his cow for $500,000 at an auction.

PhD zoologist here; You're confused! However, you are CORRECT in calling them cows; - 'cow' is an accepted noun referring to ALL cattle, REGARDLESS of age, sex etc. It can be used as a synonym for cattle. Another valid usage is obviously an adult female cattle* - note also the above sentence* "Another valid usage is obviously an adult female cattle*" cattle is singular and plural, so 'an adult female cattle' is grammatically correct ------ - bovine is indeed the taxonomic grouping for cattle and all wild counterparts (buffalo, gaur, bison etc.) as well as antelopes - The species name (common name) IS cattle. Cattle is plural and singular, so not only a group. - the species name (scientific name) is Bos taurus; cattle - then within cattle there are many breeds, these are Hereford cattle - note that breeds only occur in domesticated animals

Thank you so much for the info. I love animals and I remember playing with a Heather as a child at my great grandmothers farm. However I never knew the difference between a cow and a heifer. Can you tell me, when your heifer communicates and does she do so loudly and does she sound like an adult cow or more like a calf? Please post A video of her mowing. I wish I could come to your place and pet Cory.

You can also train a steer to become a draft animal, and when graduated from that training he becomes an ox. Not often used in Europe and North America anymore, but worldwide oxen are the number one source of agricultural pulling power.

Bull and Steer Beef is what we all eat, very seldom do they use Cow beef unless she does not calve or produce milk and then they are usually sold for beef.
