TheGreatBritishRailwayman
A channel aimed at presenting classic railwaying programs from the UK long since lost to the VHS or archives, as a avid enthusiast as well expect a volume of heritage railway footage and mainline action as well. I also branch into video games from time to time if my mood dictates. So enjoy you're stay; grab a cup of tea (or coffee, strange person), lean back into your chair and relive some of the glory days of British Railways both past and present.

If you look carefully, Ian faked getting hit by a train. 0:51
Anyone recognise the guitar theme, or was this just some improv piece for British Rail?
For those wondering, this video was made in 1985
You can't step foot near the track these days without a line blockage granted where no trains will pass through the site of work...that is until a signaller has a lapse of concentration. We're all human, so it will happen at some point, with devastating consequences no doubt...I still think lookout protection is one of the safest most efficient methods of work, obviously not counting a T3 possession...maybe incorporated with modern technology early warning systems alongside the flag and horn.
A very interesting film, and worth contemplating the changes that happened. One question comes to mind, though - what happened to all those zoom lenses of the mid to late century?
Meanwhile in India...
Watching this stuff after almost dying earlier today tripping an RCD is very interesting lmao
Shouldn't he of said bravo yankee
Have*
Is that a young Ian Write ? 😂
No Safety helmet's
Good old navi in a suit
6mins 55secs..........They ALL stepped on the sleeper, ha ha.
Um where are Audible Warning Devices(Detonators)
Ian survived the accident but is now a cabbage living in Droitwich.
Is one of the actors in this billy from London's burning it looks like him
scary intro
One never seems to hear a demand for female equality in these kind of jobs.
This is the proper way to lift things
Great video. 9:35
Very educational
It still makes me slightly alarmed to see in cab ride videos on the Continent how trains will switch tracks with no signal indication at all, as long as the speed on the diverging route is no lower than on the main route. That doesn't look right to me at all
Dennis the distant look out looked lower than shark shit
God that looked bitterly cold and raw
oops
Always seems to come down to lack of concentration and awareness
The most obvious reason for these accidents is not looking for trains, walking in the 4ft on a running line is not wise, and even when the line is blocked, you still keep looking.
Wasn’t 37109 one the locos converted to a mirlees 6?
British Rail was and still is a good organisation which had all the rail maintenance in house Unlike Railtrack and now network rail which got rid of the in house maintenance of the tracks electrification and Signalling and Telecommunications to agencies who are better at safety critical work instead of Network Rail who’s safety records are shockingly bad Since 1994 60 Trackworkers have been killed
You never know when Pip and Emma could be coming down the track.
Shazam failed…
What a shame all that modernity is now also gone, last time I came past Glasgow Central, Motherwell, even the Kingsmoor signalboxes were all boarded up, very shortsighted because with the removal of station staff, the only people in an area of railway control is a driver of a train and a guard if you are lucky to still have one and every incident is at least half an hour away from attending where at least having signalmen strategically sited along a line meant very quick response times and taking control of a potential disaster. My late father a signalman was one of the first railmen to arrive at the Lewisham disaster and he RAN all the way down the line from North Kent East Junction signalbox and it was said he as did the other first responders saved lives.
9:28 man He stepped on the fourth rail because the electricity didn't work.
Nice video footage of the RHTT.
Been there, done that, many times, but long time ago now, lol 🤣🤣. Great recording 👍👍👍👍
Super video and a great noisy departure shot. 🙂
That acceleration will out do any nasty shed... Such a shame they are near all gone 😭
Good video of the loco convoy..
Level crossings in the States, for those that have flashing lights and/or gates, were fully automated by 1950.
I was born in 1964 in the States. Here, all single-track signaled railways were fully automatic for decades before that. The Reading and Pennsylvania railways were fully automatic before 1900.
Waring. Look. Both ways
Saw this train in the sidings at Darlington without the 97
Iff the 47 didn’t have a pathetic horn, maybe he wouldn’t have died Also TAWS sounds strangely disturbing
Do government departments still make films like these?
Government departments don't do work like this any more. All off the shelf components and contractors.
@@GavinR824 thank you.
Railway signalling is amongst the most logic oriented fields. Good to see this knowledge coming in public domain.
Sounds like him of bulls eye
Must not let terrorists know about Track Ciruits, they can be false fed.
Track Ciruits are not something that want terrorists to know about.
I don’t take this lightly, I have an interest in trains and railways which is why I’ve watched videos like this. I’ve also watched rail safety videos dating back to pre-war and it seems to me that bad practice and time saving are the route cause. Specifically walking in the 4 foot rather than the cess and also being distracted whilst in dangerous areas instead of getting set up first and deploying lookouts. Obviously being in the wrong location also does not help. R.I.P all those who have lost their lives.
Nice clip of class 37 and Saloon car.
Thank you!
