Australian Institute of Marine Science

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is a world leader in tropical marine research.

We provide:
• unique insight into Australia’s tropical waters; and
• knowledge to develop globally relevant and innovative research solutions.

From Ningaloo in the west, across the Top End to the Great Barrier Reef, AIMS’ researchers understand large-scale, complex and emerging challenges in iconic marine habitats in Australia’s vast and remote tropical waters.

As a trusted name in marine science we look to Australia’s future needs and build upon our existing capabilities and knowledge to:
• improve ocean health; and
• protect coral reefs from climate change.

This creates economic, social and environmental benefit for all Australians.

Through our half century of pioneering research as Australia’s tropical marine science agency, AIMS is uniquely placed to provide the expert advice and solutions required to help preserve our marine estate and ensure its sustainable use.

just returned from Heron Island Research Station working on a field trip in Early june 2024. The reefs are devastated from mass bleaching, and considerable mortality, reef collapse was observed. Reefs I have worked on for years are destroyed and unrecognizable. These reefs no longer look viable long term, especially if another mass bleaching occurs.

I've done some surveying of coral reefs & seen how the CoT starfish decimate the corals, massively destructive. Strangely, the disappear into the depths during daylight, & only come out at night, about 2 hours after sunset, from what I saw.

Hi! Crown-of-thorns starfish are native to the Great Barrier Reef, and not an introduced species. They occur naturally throughout the Indo-Pacific region, on coral reefs from the Red Sea to the west coast of the Americas.

My mother’s graduate research was based on something similar. She exposed Betta fish to water from other Betta fish, of both the same and the opposite sex, and recorded their behavior. She also recorded their reactions to the sight of another Betta, again, same and opposite sex (and even a mirror). Needless to say, the male Bettas do NOT like other male Bettas.
