This is ABC of chess. Of course Magnus KNEW he cannot win, he only wanted Kramnik to blunder somewhere with the black rook, and that is all. That was the whole purpose of 'fancy moves' with white king in the F and G files. In this position, though, it is difficult for black to blunder with the king because Kramnik already locked his king ahead of white pawns.

Magnus couldn't win. It's draw from the start. I check with stockfish (depth 99) and as surprising as it is, it's impossible for white to win. When I say impossible, I of course mean against grand masters. For most players, they would have lost with black.
