We travelled 300km one way to visit the Park, bringing a visitor from America along. That was in 1998. As soon as our braai fire was lit, a minibus with youths stopped and twenty-odd guys spilled out, very noisily, and emptied two large bins fklled with cans of beer. They were rowdy, rude and our day was spoiled. We never visited our regular old haunt again.

I grew up in Brakpan in the 60's. We lived in Dalview and later in Brenthurst. When I was 11 we moved to the Eastern Transvaal. Since then I have only been back to Brakpan twice; once for a day visit with a relative and much later for a funeral. After school and college, I settled in Roodepoort on the West Rand where I am living still. The East Rand had such a bad reputation and the West Rand was supposed to be so much better and up class compared to the East. After stumbling on a video about Brakpan e few weeks ago, I really started missing my old home town where I spend my childhood. Since then I have watched two more video about people driving through the streets of Brakpan. And man, was I surprised. It looks so much better than what I became used to here on the West Rand. Compared to Roodepoort, it looks like paradise to me. The CBD of Roodepoort is a now go zone. The streets are cramped, congested and the sidewalks are crowded and filthy. People are walking everywhere, even in the middle of the streets. Cars are double parked. There is trash everywhere. The sidewalks are full of street vendors, pick pockets and drug pushers. Posters are glued to the walls, dead rats lying in the streets and the smell of urine is everywhere. I was surprised to see how clean the street s of Brakpan looks compared to what I'm used to in Roodepoort. Brakpan's CBD is still relatively open and accessible. It is open and traffic flows freely. There is no congestion and people still move about with ease by foot or by car. Nobody hanging around at traffic lights to solicit or harass you. It makes me wish that I was living in Brakpan rather than Roodepoort. Trust me, the main roads of Brakpan is so much better than even Johannesburg central or anything e have on the West Rand. I think what gave people the wrong impression about Brakpan in this video is the drive trough "Plastic City". That is the first impression people got of the place and it just stuck through out. Brakpan is not bad at all. I miss the place very much lately. I will make a point of visiting it in the near future and remember my my happy childhood memories. Love Brakpan ❤Thumbs up from me👍

Coming from Johannesburg, my first job was in Dundee at the school called Empathe, I was teaching Standard 4 and the year was 1989. There was a local Zulu hymn that they sang about Cain and Abel that went like this, Girls: "UKhayin' akazuzanga, ngokubulalu' mfowabo lutho!" Boys: "Lutho lutho lutho lutho x5"! Both sexes, "UJesu uyakubiza uthi buyela kuye yebo!" "O yebo yebo yebo O yebo yebo yebo!" ×3. Wow although I was homesick that song used to soothes my mind, loneliness and my emotional well being. I went from Dundee to Emabovini between Dundee and ENquthu then went to a farm school between Dundee and Vryheid on the junction of Bloodriver and Utrecht. I had an accident with my first vehicle an Audi 80 GLS that was powdered blue in colour. I was moved to a place called Normandien also farm school between Newcastle and Chemsford dam mind you in a space of one year due to redeployment. I resign in December because I couldn't stand to be in a rural area. Memories never fade it seems like yesterday.

People can say what they want to about Brakpan, it is still the cleanest town on the East Rand, compared to Springs, Boksburg, Benoni, Kempton, and Germiston. You don't have to travel through Plastic City to get to Brakpan, you can travel to the Carnival Mall, and then into Brakpan. Brakpan has some really nice and expensive suburbs, like Sonneveld. Minnebron, Brenthurst, Larrendale, Dalpark, and Dalview are also nice areas. Like any other town, you have the bad and good areas, bad and good people.
