CapnClever

I speedrun Commander Keen alongside a bunch of stuff from the DOS/Win9x era. Also been working on a video series for Doom called Evolution of the WAD.

Videos that go here tend to be "good runs", but I almost always live-stream my runs: my twitch.tv username is "CapnClever", same as here.

    Yeah, we definitely didn't know about the floor clipping or the 5th slot thing back in the days of the SDA speedrun (which I had some influence on). Was wondering how you'd survive the pyramid without abusing Shrapmetal - easily the game's strongest attack spell. EDIT: And it still looks like Shrapmetal played a hand anyways.

    My childhood finished in 17 minutes, great run 🙃 Ps: In retroperspective, this is actually a really weird game for kids. Rooms full of scary spiders, weird dudes hiding in stones only sneeking up on you from behind, mushrooms that are more terryfing than Batmans Joker, angry balls chasing you, snails shit*ing everywhere and a seemingly "nice" fish 16:32

    I don't have the patience to do this myself, but a skilled speedrunner such as you could do an episode in just a couple of minutes with a peculiarity I discovered. It's possible to suicide (F6) on the same frame as the next-level transition -- easiest on the interstitial "levels" where you fall straight down from top to bottom. When you do, it copies the interstitial level to the next level number. This change is sticky until you quit to DOS. If you do it repeatedly and time it correctly, you can fall all the way to the end of the game. I haven't seen anyone else mention this trick, but if you use it, tell 'em I sent ya!

    Is this all just recorded in one run? Is there a way to to the special air jump at 4:16 consistently? Is it possible to learn this power?

    It's all in one take, yes: that's one of the purposes behind these speedruns, to perform everything in an unbroken series. Were this segmented, I'd make it very clear that's the case (maybe add "segmented" in the title) as I wouldn't want people to get the wrong idea. As for the air jump: the timing depends on keen's speed on a given frame, which unfortunately oscillates every third frame by a pixel. The timing window for the trick itself is one frame, but even if we assume perfect user input you're guessing between two inputs separated by a single frame. With practice I was consistent with two-frame windows, like jumping at heights besides the full jump, so I'm realistically I aim between the two timings. All that said, I recall succeeding by the third or fourth try in most attempts, so it's consistent-ish. The setup is pretty simple: stand on the very last pixel of the ledge, walk off for 2-3 frames, then jump. I've even accidentally performed air jumps playing casually, so it's far from impossible by casual standards.

  • @lightlayagajoie5739
    @lightlayagajoie57393 ай бұрын

    @@CapnCleverDoing the air jump on one attempt is the only thing that made me ask if it was one run. the rest seems somewhat doable. In fact I have done a similar speed run one time. I can not get any consistency in my attempts in how many frames keen uses per taps and how quickly he moves forward. if you can make him use 3 frames without moving then the 4th frame sometimes seems to make the air jump more likely. the problem is sometimes he doesn't use a frame or falls off with fewer taps. Do you actually see the difference between the walking frames and go of that or do you count from he last time standing still? Like, where do you start counting? It seems that even as you are remaining on the same pixel the game seems to remember how far along you are on that pixel or something It does happen to me accidentally too but it seems kinda random. I wonder if this is a glitch or intentional. apparently the only way to do a non-kill run in keen 2 is to use that jump. the level below is the only part you can't get past a few grunts otherwise. that can't be a coincidence right?

  • @CapnClever
    @CapnClever3 ай бұрын

    According to TAS creator turska, the speed oscillation "can be manipulated by entering levels earlier or later" (see tasvideos.org/3585S ): from there, it's happening constantly over the course of the level, roughly twelve times per second. I don't attempt to keep track of it, I just aim for the approximate point between where the two timings could be and hope for the best. To be clear, plenty of runs would get there and fail the jump, at which point I would reset and start again: sometimes you grind out attempts until the pieces go your way, an expected inevitability of Keen runs. I highly doubt the air jump itself is intentional: it's possible when they created maps for Keen2 it was a known glitch and that shortcut was created with such awareness, and I wouldn't put it past the original iD team to be creative like that. I also doubt they were considering a pacifist route through the game, though that's just my experience with the series as a whole.

    Looking at the description, I never mentioned a really important improvement in this run: sofa inertia storage! The sofas in levels 7, 8, and 9 of this episode cause Johnny to have different midair inertia while bouncing on them. If you exit a level while doing this, the game ends up "storing" that sofa-based inertia into a newly-entered level that doesn't contain sofas (maybe the game never bothers to check because there are no objects that should require said check). For the purpose of this run, we store that inertia when starting the run, and it's carried through the first six levels: this creates small but meaningful improvements on each. At first I was hesitant to allow this glitch in the run, as it naively requires you to play through most of the game, store inertia once you hit level 7, and then start the run over again. However, one of the automatic demos that play from the main menu arrive at level 8 and end the demo on a sofa, thus stored inertia happens without ever playing. So I considered it a reasonable addition to the speedrun, but to avoid needing to wait something like five minutes in-between attempts I also stored it myself between runs (from a save on level 8). Not sure how anyone else feels about that, I figured it's enough to be technically possible even if runs don't use that exact setup. By the same standard, it wouldn't be allowed in other episodes as those lack any sofa-jumping in demos. Just thought I should explain this properly, and my sincere apologies that I never did way back when I posted the video.

    Capn what are your in game mouse settings and do you have a specific dpi setting? It looks to be high for the speed boost with the vmm but was curious. I am a big wolf3d player but never attempted speed running. I do know you have some tutorials though!

  • @CapnClever
    @CapnClever4 ай бұрын

    Checked the mouse sensitivity I had in-game and it was one below max, but I was also recently doing runs of a different Wolf3D game and left it on default (four below max), so it's possible to go with both. I recommend as much as possible until the vertical movement becomes too unwieldy. As for DPI, that's the tricky part: I use a trackball rather than a standard mouse, so there are times when I roll it very carefully (such as aiming) and times when I fling it in the direction I need (such as in movement-heavy sections). The keyboard and mouse speeds are still linked together, even if the mouse is what allows you to achieve higher speeds: this is to say that you can move forward with a KB run and "boost" it with a relatively light mouse roll to maximize your forward motion. With practice your keyboard and mouse movements can become synchronized, which is the easiest way to keep up optimal speed. The mouse COULD do all the work, but even with a trackball that's very messy (evident in runs like this). Also, if you're playing in DOS (e.g., DOSBox) and like using the mouse but want no vertical weirdness, there's a NOVERT.COM file that disables the vertical mouse axis. I used to run episodes with it before realizing the potential for mouse speed, and it's certainly a more palatable way to play when you're used to virtually every other FPS. The file should be available around Doom archives such as Doomworld, as Doom runners frequently made use of it (that game provides no such speed bonus to a vertically-moving mouse).

  • @CapnClever
    @CapnClever5 ай бұрын

    Death exits require some coincidences to work. First, taking a hit (or "dying") causes Keen to change in a few ways, but for this explanation he can't exit levels and ignores terrain collision. Second, saves don't track the can't-exit-levels part, which is why saving and immediately reloading is necessary. Finally, most levels have level-exiting tiles just outside the visual level boundary (could be a default in the level editor at the time) that function by touch, so crossing that boundary hits one of those tiles. Putting it all together: you take a hit, save/load, and wait for Keen to bounce through the level boundary, thereby touching a level exit. Sometimes reaching the boundary is impossible with a single bounce, so you chain saves/loads together, but the result is the same.

  • @CapnClever

    Combat's a weird thing in this game. Everything dies in one hit so it merely comes down to killing before being killed. Your attack, however, is one of five different swings that vary in speed, and swing choice is determined by the game clock: in a speedrun setting, this means your speed-optimal swing type is guaranteed and it may be very fast (2:26), very slow (2:49), or something in between. I didn't actually test every enemy, so there may be cases where attacking is faster than avoiding, but for practical purposes it amounts to the same thing. And yes, ladders are horrendously slow. That's why I spend the singular extra life falling down a pit instead of climbing!

    So good. I have such a fondness for the first 3 Keen games. I think the lowest time I ever got for Keen 1 was around 5 minutes. Would you ever consider doing a run that allows the F8 bug? Sometimes batteries, joysticks, vacuums, and Everclears appear really early on... if you're not just killed immediately. I bet it would be possible to beat the game really quickly if you knew the exact spots to hit F8.

    Took me a bit to find a v1.1 copy (only version to have the aforementioned bug) and it's pretty interesting, but I probably won't work on a run using it: it'd be more of a spectacle rather than a skill/knowledge showcase, the latter being more up my alley. For what it's worth, I found the first small level to contain three of the four key items, so there wouldn't be much hunting around anyway. Nifty little quirk in the game tho', thanks for sharing!
