Hello fellow river and boating enthusiasts! I grew up on the upper Mississippi River in a family of commercial fisherman; to say that it’s in my blood is putting it lightly. I built a 20 foot houseboat from scratch (not a kit) and plan to sail it to the Gulf of Mexico in the fall of 2023. My channel is where I post informative videos about the workings of the river showing sights and sounds of what life is like on the water. I also fish a lot and plan to share this with you, whether I’m ice fishing in Wisconsin, chasing walleye in South Dakota or pulling in saltwater bruisers in Costa Rica. I hope you’ll come along with me.
Thanks for following my channel!

Great to see you fishing and teaching us how it’s done! Love the lure hanging off the mirror too :).
The boys say Hi grandpa!!!!!
how many lb is your line?
Hi Asian! I have 20lb. Sufix 832 braid with a 15lb flourocarbon leader
which beach were you at?
This was on Rainbow beach
@@DonnieGilliland you didnt bother to try to fish from that peninsula?
@@asianangler You mean the rocky one I'm standing on? Yes, that's what I was doing when my wife took that picture. It was difficult to fish, lots of large rocks (snags) out to about 50 feet.
Perch... It's whats for dinner.
That's right Mike! They were very tasty.
hey man I was wondering if you could give me the spot, I am going soon and would really like to be sucessful at catchin a few fish. thanks!
Rainbow Beach
Shanty boaters got it right ;)
I love that lake!!
Me too son! We've had lots of good times and good fishing up there!
Nice video Donnie. I'll see you on the water!
Thanks Mark!
I recognize those waters 😁
I thought you would! No big secrets about them. Lol.
lame. Why would you keep a barracuda?
Hi oaklandraider. I have always been a believer in catch and release. Especially large fish. In this case, I wanted to release it, but the guide kept it to help feed his family. Things are very expensive in the Bahamas. They utilize any means to help put food on the table. Have a good day.
do you like people tell you what to do ?
Nice video, beautiful spot. How relaxing!
Thanks for the compliment Furdog. Yes, it's beautiful there. My wife and I love it,
Beautiful spot and video... Watching from Mauritius.. I also practice this type of fishing here.. You can consider checking my channel if you are interested.. Fish on...
Very beautiful, and 10 days of it! Wow, those are some nasty looking teeth on that massive catch. The salty coconut is literally feet from the water too.
Thanks Jeff. Yes it is very beautiful in the Bahamas. You don't want to get your hands too close to a thrashing 'cuda. They've been known to remove fingers.
Hello from the quiet rainy Ozarks Donnie! Another video of value! Hope you both are well and enjoying your day! Do you have to turn your motor off in the lock? Looking forward to more river adventures. Tight lines and bent poles!
Hi Phillip! Thanks for the comments. I continue struggling to find the root cause of the engine shutting down. No, the new fuel pump did not fix the problem, but all of the troubleshooting and diagnosing I did, pointed to the fuel pump as the problem. The boat is now winterized and put away for the winter, so I'll get back on it in the spring. As far as turning the engine off in the locks... I believe some states (Minn.?) make it mandatory to turn them off, for fear of carbon monoxide poisoning. Most locks don't care one way or another. I think it's a good idea. Thanks for following along with us, it was quite the experience. Donnie
thanks for your quick reply and i hope you can solve your fuel problem. Looking forard to your return on the water!@@DonnieGilliland
Hello from the quiet Ozarks! Another video of value. Hope you both are well and enjoying your day. Did the new fuel pump solve your motor cutting out after pumping primer bulb fuel with fuel? Looking forward to your future adventures. tight lines and bent poles!
Can’t wait to get together for lunch when you’re back. It was a lot of fun following you guys on your journey, unfortunate it ended early. Look forward to future excursions and that book someday!
Will be fun to get together to hear all! Great experience 😊
Glad you two are safe and sound. It was great following along.
I’m glad you’re getting some help. People on the river are always helpful. I sure hope you have the Tow Boat US membership. We have one but thankfully we’ve never had to use it. So are you still going to go down the Ohio river? Good luck and enjoy your couple of nights in the hotel.
Hi Marvin, we are not traveling on the Ohio any further, we actually went UP the Ohio when being towed. Yes, we have a Boat US membership. Saved me a lot of money in charges. Paid for itself the first time out. Hopefully the engine will get fixed today. Donnie
Nice of them to lend you the mini van. Hope the outboard turns out to be a easy fix.
Thanks TR, me too!
Oh sh_t! I suppose it wouldn’t be a complete experience unless a curveball or two were thrown your way. Treat it as a nice break! See ya back on the water soon.
@@DonnieGillilandme too. At least the lower unit isn’t sitting on top of a wing dam That would be my luck 😂
Great video Donnie! It’s sad that the water is so low. That lock was crazy! 38 feet is a long drop. Marvin,
Thanks Marvin
Whoa, going down almost 40 ft in a lock, that’s insane!
I know, it was easier than I thought. But, there's a lock on the lower end of our journey that I've heard that is over 60 feet! We'll see!
Thank you for filming my old stretch that gave me weeks of smiles.
You're welcome! It's been a great trip so far, lots to see and wonderful people.
Just caught up on ep 3&4. Beautiful scenery and I like the river towns.
There is no way she’ll let you park a barge in the front yard…..but I like the idea, would be massive, of course you’d have a heli-pad too!!!
Yes, that would be the houseboat of all houseboats!
Spam and eggs. Breakfast of champions.
It's been many years since I ate Spam, but it kinda grows on you!
I'm having intermittent Wi-fi access and connectivity issues at times. Hope you like the videos.
😂 @ pelicans comment! The journey looks beautiful so far. I'm glad the weather has been decent, too.
Donnie, you are a great tour guide; we are learning alot! Best wishes for safe journey ahead. Looking forward to the next video.
Who knew buoy’s were cans and nuns, great to see you guys again, have fun and stay safe. Can’t wait until the next update, and to learn more too!
Thanks Jeff! As they say, "You can't make this stuff up!"
Thank you for taking us all along on your journey, we’re excited to be part of it and I’m already learning things I never knew before. Safe travels to you and your first mate.
What a tremendous accomplishment Donnie, the Sylvia C is a testament to your talent, may she keep you and your first mate safe.
Awesome job Donnie! So excited for you guys! I have been hearing you dream about this since we were young kids. I know how excited you must be to be doing this. Safe travels and I look forward to your next video.
Thanks Todd, yes, it's been a long time since I first wanted to do this.
@@DonnieGilliland pops just sent me this. Safe journey Donnie! 👍👍
