Grain Free Homestead

Grain Free Homestead

We're just a regular family making it the best way we know how. We recently bought my ancestral farmhouse from the 1880's and have been doing our best to get it renovated. Our goal is to decrease our dependence on the supply chain more and more each year. Our diet is a little different than most homesteaders in that we can't have gluten or any grain for that matter due to severe allergies. We want to share homesteading, gardening and grainfree living with you guys. We love sharing ways to be more independent as well as getting ideas from you guys!

    I buy a calf every spring and let him cut my grass all summer, then I let him out in a pasture that is a mix of standing dry corn and grass. Then when its a cold day and he is fat and happy eating a sugar coated carrot he suddenly stops living. I am always humane and gentle with this part, I played with them as calves... I then hang and age it, cut it up and share it with my family. My cost is a calf ($300-+) about 50 pounds of seed corn, a couple hours of tractor time to plant corn and some time. Plus, I save on property taxes since the land is actively agricultural. You can have basically free food with as little as 5 acres in most places.

    I think you got your math a little off. You paid half of the cow..thats $1500. You kept 421 + pounds of meat. That works out to a bit less than $4/pound. I think you confused some folks since you said the WHOLE COW was $3000, but since you split the cost with another family your cost was half.

    If more people did this and skipped the processing plant it would help the farmer and also create competition which brings the big companies prices down. The big corporations have bought up the processing plants and collaborated to inflate prices. Look up what the farmer gets per pound for a steer at auction vs what the supermarket charges per pound. The mark up is insane even though it’s processed beef.

    Love your video! Thank you for sharing your process. I have a question: When you cook the fat overnight in your crock pot on low is there a temp you are aiming for? Mine was getting pretty hot on low so I turned it down to “keep warm”. It still came up to 180 degrees. Is this ok? Is this what you want to happen? I’m worried about burning it.

    What was the hanging weight price per pound on your 794lbs? I just split a half cow with my neighbor and the hanging weight price was $7.00/lb. After running the numbers, you pay for take home but also you pay for the waste. Out of 325lb hanging weight you take home about 195lbs of meat however 130lbs is waste. (58%/42%) total cost was $2275 and that comes to $1365 (for meat in freezer) and $910 (waste you pay for). So in reality we paid $11.66lb. for what we actually took home, Correct?

  • @GrainFreeHomestead
    @GrainFreeHomestead3 ай бұрын

    We did a part 2 to help with the breakdown. We took our bring home weight and divided by what we paid. Ours included processing and packaging

  • @dp6903
    @dp69032 ай бұрын

    @@GrainFreeHomestead Thanks for the reply. Your numbers come out to this - Hanging Weight at 794 lbs. for $3.78/lb. Your Take Home weight of 421 lbs. means you took home 53% of the Hanging Weight. You had a waste of 47% (373 lbs. that was paid for but unusable) The cost of your Take Home Packaged Meat comes to $7.12/lb. So out of the $3000 bill, you paid $1590. for the meat in your freezer and $1409.94 for whatever you didn't take home (waste). Pure numbers. Bottom line, you come out way ahead for cuts like rib-eye, filet, etc... but $7.12/lb. for ground meat, stew meat, briskets, etc.. is a bit over the norm and there is a lot of ground meat when you purchase like this. However, the benefits, on the whole do outweigh the overall pricing. Nicely Done.
