It would be more correct to say Prokofiev was Soviet, not Russian. He was born in the Ukraine. I don't know how he identified himself.

Frankly, tired of institutions blackwashing classical music and opera. I thought for sure an ensemble led by Yannick would be more diverse than Philly Orchestra is. On my first, and to be only, recent attendance, I didn't see a single black musician on stage. Philly Orchestra can TALK all it wants about how it embraces the community that Philly is, but what are you DOING to ensure equal access to music for Philadelphia's children. You can rename all the halls you want and give away all the dress rehearsal tickets that you want. Until Philly Orchestra begins to back programs such as the one in Los Angeles that provides EVERY PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENT A FREE INSTRUMENT AND LESSONS, you're not doing anything in Philadelphia except highlighting the disparities between the haves and the have nots. Access to music education is why orchestras like the LA Philharmonic and St. Louis are more successfully diverse. I have stopped subscribing to the Philly Orchestra and, despite being a Philadelphian, I send my money to LA for this reason. Suggest others do the same.

I am trying to learn piano again. I play by ear but I have not been able to get my left hand to play independently yet and it has been a hard challenge. I have set a goal for myself to be able to play the hallelujah chorus by my 50th birthday. I have a little more than 10 years to get it.🤓

Seemed a bit slow (about 136 bpm), At UM, whether MMB or SB, it was 164 under Revelli. Still, always nice to hear "The Song", as once described by Sports Ilustrated, in Hill Audoitorium.

Thank you for sharing that with us. I can’t believe you have the piano of Wolfgang Sawallisch ! Wow!! do you know I saw him conduct the Philadelphia Orchestra I think it was back in the 1990s. What a great man! Thank you for bringing so much energy and joy to the Philadelphia Orchestra! Thank you, Yannick!

Sawallisch was something else. The Phillips recording of Tanhausser featuring Bumbry Silja and Wingassen is one of the most exciting performances I have ever heard. I haven't experienced Yannich yet, but I've heard friends compare him to Sawallisch. So, I guess it's time to get on board.

I'm always curious how conductors will interpret those last two chords: all the players have regular quarter notes, but the timpani's notes are preceded by graces - so, I've heard some recordings where the timps anticipate the last two strikes by a split second, which can be very cool.
