They did not experience the cultural construct of blackness there are many whites and blacks from the south that are alike the separation is the racism blks faced at the hands of whites and the system that was erected to keep blacks down and this system has become more sophisticated in that its after the blk nuclear family

This is an amazing story. I think you summarized the perspective of how you interpreted the feelings of your passing family members with care and respect. They are perfectly suited in their identity, why would they care to return to the fold. They benefit from the risk of their ancestors.

Wow.....all i experienced in watching this is self centeredness.....i respect woman who dont have children because they dont want them....i cant empathize or wrap my head or heart around it but i respect it However, having a child and not wanting it is utterly unnatural although im sure this detachment is due to some sort of neglect or trauma

My mother was placed in an orphanage by her father, and she was one of the people who shouldn’t have had children, but she did. I chose not to have children, and the fact that I was emotionally neglected as a child impacted my whole life. My only brother killed himself. Kudos to women who know themselves well enough to not have children.

A lot of woman get pressured to marry and have children from family members. Then, they just reach a day they can't fake happiness in their situation anymore. And they want out. I've known quite a few woman who have walked out on their families sad to say. Anyway, do what you want for the present. Try not to regret any decisions you've made in the past. We don't know in advance how we feel then! That goes for everything in life. "Woulda, shoulda, coulda" is a waste of energy.

I believe alot of people that have passed believe that there isn't a benefit to acknowledging the blackness. If there was something to gain, I'm sure they would be more willing and accepting of their blackness.

Unless one is a recent arrival in the US you are probably mixed to some degree. I have 0 Sub-Sharan African but I have Native American, Asian West, and South and 16 mixtures of European. People want to stick rigidly to the categories of Black and White but I don't think you can in many cases.

Hubiera preferido verla irse sola.

Very interesting family, i am sure there are many similar tales. We are a blended nation, like a stew... But, weirdly, the old racist rule was like one drop of black blood got you classified as black. Does that still apply? Maybe it takes time to assimilate a new cultural / family / racial information?

I stumbled upon this series and watched all the episodes. It is an amazing story. I am sorry, but these people were in complete denial. The do no look white. They are obviously black. Some look more black than their mother. Still sad they were robbed of their identity as black men and women.

As for her relatives they are white in their minds. "They don't think about race," please, that is not a real sentiment ever. I understand why people pass themselves off as something else in our society. It was and still is a coping mechanism a way of navigating through bias that exists in our world. It's funny to think that some of these people while fooling others have managed to fool themselves. It is also telling that these people being perceived as white have more acceptance than blacks. It just exsposes how petty and biased the human race can be. We have so far to go in our development, unfortunately I fear our own nature will hinder that growth.

25:06 Teens do "stupid" stuff, yes, but most are not committing felony crimes. A few years in an adult prison would be a life changing experience, and teach them that illegal actions have consequences. As it is, they got off easy.

I am Puerto Rican and my Parents are as well they both look white as do all my siblings, but me I don't look black or white they say I look like I'm Indian because of my long black straight hair . in the black community I was not accepted nor in the white Community . My Parents fought for me to be Admitted into our club pool , that they had bought a membership too. My Parents and siblings could go but I could not . Sign said NO Blacks or Negroes Allowed . We came to Va in 1968 from Puerto Rico , my dad was in the Army he was an Engineer . He served in WW2 and 3 tours in Vietnam and wanted to Retire in Va after serving 32 yrs in the Military . At Fort Belvoir Va . When he did Retire he got a job as 1 of head Engineers working on the Bay Bridge . GREAT PAY for our large family . He Sued and won our case against the Club . I always ADMIRED my dad and always said don't ever get that man MAD .

I remember this time the - 70’s and the decline. The marginalized population struggled with a declining school district, steel production, jobs, housing and politics. Watching the apathy of accepting the crumbs left behind because of greed, corruption, neglect and abandonment still bothers me today. The community was left behind like a parent leaves a child abandoned; the families were left to figure it out by themselves. I love Braddock, it’s a testament to resiliency and strength. The generational families who have persevered demonstrate that they are enough. They are the real stakeholders and what matters. I worked for this community for decades. Damn near killed me. Nonetheless I have enormous respect for Braddock.

This is triggering and interesting. Their entire identity is a lie just to survive in America. Long ago I read the book of the white man who lived as a black man to have the black experience, I don’t have to tell you that wasn’t pleasant.
