    Why does the water freeze around the docks-ice and not offshore?

    Why do you communicate with your crew over radio in English? I really like your explanation in this video. Keep on adding the radio communication to your videos. Then you really stick out.

  • @joep001

    We always work with multiple nationalities on board so English is the official working language. But even when i speak to my Dutch colleagues over the radio i speak in English, so the rest of the crew hears what's going on, so they can follow along and anticipate on the next step. Same when i request information about distances or bollards from the crew; if i have the pilot next to me he will directly understand the English question and the English reply without losing time on translating for him. When we need a tugboat the communication to the tugboat is always handled by the pilots and usually in the local language. A lot of the time pilots will not translate or explain the communication or actions by the tugboats... and sometimes i have the feeling that's intentional ;-) I also think to include the radio communications in the videos are good value... but to edit them in takes sooo much time i can't do it for every video :(

    Mostly it looks like the crew (you?) are steering the boat, but sometimes the pilot is doing "things". Is he also steering the boat or just giving advice? This was not the case in this video, but I saw it on other videos.

  • @joep001
    @joep0014 ай бұрын

    Yes, technically and legally the captain & crew are always in charge of the navigation & maneuvering; the pilot only gives advice... even though some pilots seem to forget that sometimes. On the other hand: you should really know what you are doing if you want to ignore the advise of the local expert. Usually the pilot can adjust the heading, or in consultation with the crew make some hand steering. But he never bears any responsibility: that's all on the captain & crew. There should always be a good cooperation between the pilot and the bridge team: the pilot knows the area, the currents and handles the tugboats. The captain & crew know their ship and the limitations it has, so they should know what their ship can/can not do. So we should all work together and use all available knowledge and skill available. In reality -i think- it is a sliding scale. There are moments where the local knowledge of the pilot will be more important when navigating the breakwaters or the rivers, sailing in the current and tides, sometimes passing shallow waters that are not presented in the charts. In other moments, it might be the captain who knows best how quickly the ship will slow down, or turn, and how much engine/rudder/bowthruster input he needs to manoeuvre the ship.

    Fun to watch your journey to Uddevalla. Adding the VHF Radio gave the movie an extra "touch" and was educational. The Swedish West Coast (Gothenburg to Norway) have been my home waters for around 50 years, so it's extra fun to watch this episode.

    Luckely the bridge wings are closed on Kwintebank, so manoeuvring is warm for me... but I sure do my best to manoeuver as quick as possible so the crew don't get cold either ☃️

    I did slow down the timelapses in the newer videos but ships manoeuvre just incredibly slow. The current makes this a simple and fast approach, but still this video captured about 15 minutes.

    Question sir , why do you require tug assistance ? In your previous video there is no tug assistance sir.

  • @joep001
    @joep001 Жыл бұрын

    Good question! In this case we were relatively large compared to the basin we were in. Also we were all the way in the end, so we needed a 90 degree turn to get out, but had little room to maneuvre ahead or astern (so little room for pitch ahead/astern, and without pitch the rudder is not effective). If we were a smaller vessel like Stroombank, or we had a different position i think the harbour master / pilot would have allowed us to depart without tug.
