From a home workshop I have scratch built models over many years, using unique, simple and effective methods. For the past eight years I have been videoing everything, so the ideas don't get lost. I have videoed complete builds of three submarines, probably the most difficult boats to create, a delightful tug boat called Scuffy, and an N Gauge train set. I have poured many ideas into these builds and they are there for anyone to take.
I have also dabbled in arduino, and have programmed these fantastic and cheap boards to sit at the heart of my boats.
A half of what I have done is available on my U -Tube channel. It is all available for free on www.scratchbuildwithjohn.com.

nice layout
My late grandad was on hms jersey. Sunk outside maltas harbour . This has inspired me that I might be able to build approximate of it .
I have the hms javalin and reproduced all metal detail parts in cast resin. With destroyers anything above the water line has to be very light No metal parts

Sadly, John has passed away. 😢 He was a great modeller.
She is a beauty. thanks for the video.
Impressive 👍
Hello, what depth does it reach Thank you
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Amazing work ... thanks for sharing 👍
Good job 👍
That was very informative, thanks for sharing 👍
it's a nice model however should not the after gun have it's barrels facing aft not towards the bow? most photo's and museum destroyer's I have seen have the after gun mount facing the stern. so wondered if this ship should not had been the same way.
Exceptional build!. Brings many ideas for my scratchbuilt (in progress) 688, especially the acoustic tiling. I Really enjoy your videos😊
Where did you buy the new motor etc from please.
likely better than the "flat" etched brass sets
Nicely done.
Drawing up plans for a 46'' stern wheeler, looks like you've given me the power sys. Thank you Sir.
Ironic, I bought all the stuff to make an R/C stern wheeler myself last year around Christmas and as it does life cropped up. But I am dusting off the parts and starting work on it again. good luck!
Yes vary stunning.... great job ..
So, that's what it's like to be on a sub tender.
This USN veteran who spent a great amount of his youth working a needle gun aboard ships can tell you that it is the best looking rust I've ever seen on a scale model.
LMAOOOOO.....never knew rust could humble someone??
not a navy ship afloat that's not covered in rust - comes with the territory
I watched this video earlier this year and took your experience to power a 1970 cica Swedish lifeboat these brushless motors are so incredible I used a belt drive from Amazon 2.5:1 and it all went very well crazy sailing time and super seed control. Thanks for the push I needed.
Thanks for your video just a question please Do you use flat varnish after wheatering or may be you leave it like that with nothibg more Many thanks
awesome job warm regards from ATHENS
Hello, can you please advise the model names/partnos of the; esc, motor, battery and gearbox spec. Many thanks. Mike
Hi John I'm just starting in rc submarines and I have a 1/32 scale gato class hull so it's 9foot 9inchs but could you recommend a rc transmitter to maybe deal in ardino at some point please, thanks for any help and I'm in Nsw Australia.
great video heres a new subs
Great videos John. Thanks for your contrubitions to me as a newbie at this hobby. Greetings from Turkey
I watch this every now and then. I want to make one of these some day.
Great video, just viewed it in November 2021. I like the idea of using the LiPo battery and lighter motor to save weight... this should make it easier to trim heavier ballast if needed deeper in the hull and help get the Center of Gravity lower in the hull where it will do the most good!
I used to sell those electronize speed controllers here in Melbourne and these can be adjusted for slow speed or faster depending on the use needed. To be honest, it all depends on the motor used, I use printer motors on my model boats and they use stuff all power and I can have them just very slowly turning over and have full control. These motors you are using do not like 6v gel cell batteries and I use them for power and ballast. Each to their own I guess.
Any links on how to hook that up. I have a few dead printers
To hook what up ?? the printer motor or the speed controller ??
well both I guess, could be a popular video. many people have old printers.@@TimsBitsnPieces
I used to be a member of this club many years ago when there was just the red brick clubhouse, it seems a lot has changed since. Great footage.
using this for titanic
"When that dries, it will be quite subtle. I think it will be quite nice". You couldn't wait until it dried and then showed us???
Well done. This has given me ideas to improve my Airfix 1/600 models which have no handrails.
That pump can be used at Rc submarine
How to fiill out water from ballas tank
This pump two way or not
yep, you just need to invert the polarities of the motor
Just sub ed to your website... great resource
The Brit convoy of ducks managed to avoid the UBoat threat. This time. ;-)
Great clip! Can you please tell me what do you mean by plastic? It's polystyrene?
Very cool model. Thanks for the tip. I’ll keep that in mind.
Only two small seacoast based holes required . . . . Far less drag. Far less risk of sinking. Would also cost way less. Why are there not bow and stern thrusters available that use this principle???
Can I suggest you try real rust? I use steel wool soaked in vinegar for a week. Dry it out and it reduces into a rust powder. Use meths to apply and brush in with a hard bristle brush.... It gets that lovely shine of old rust and continues to change
you did a great job.. i am working on a 1/96 scale version.. what size is your ballast tank?
Thank you. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
hi here, how you make the end shut off of this piston?
Amazing! Well done old bean
hey John thanks for the video, i have some questions. the pump in/out pump is it for the ballast? So what is the work of piston?
