Prof. Dr. Florian Leitner-Fischer

Prof. Dr. Florian Leitner-Fischer

My name is Florian Leitner-Fischer and I'm a computer science professor and software engineer based in Germany. I have experience both in academia as well as in industry managing a globally distributed software engineering team. In my videos I talk about programming, software development, software engineering and computer science as well as the occasional tech / gadget review.

My mission is to help you to take the step from programmer to software engineer and to help you being a better software engineering leader.

I'm someone who wants to transition from a rapid-prototype style to a more formal environment.. perhaps not for FAA/FDA/DOE approval, but to develop high quality/safe products containing embedded software.. for any industry.. aerospace (like Lockhead's SEAL Level X, Boeing , DDPMAS etc) , Medical, or Nuclear industries. I'd love to see a trivial example that shows all the steps and outputs. For example, assuming I document the process on how the code is generated, what constitutes proof that it's safe? Static Analysis, Code Coverage - Statement (Level C), Decision (Level B), MCDC (Level A)? Who defines the unit tests? I imagine there are differences between the industries.. FAA : DO-178X , DO 331 , ARP4754A , ED-12C FDA : 13485 , ISO14971 , IEC 62304 , SaMD and DOE : 414.1x, but what are the typical tools/software needed, and the typical document/artifacts in the various stages of the software life cycle? I saw a good video by CEMILAC Education Program "Airborne Software Development & Certification Process" and it's a bit overwhelming: Requirement Management - (IBM Ration) DOORS, JAMA, Xebrio, rmtoo florath , doorstop-dev / doorstop , reqview Static Source Code Analysis - Parasoft, PolySpace, CodeSonar, horusec , sonar cloud, veracode PREFast Dynamic Analysis / Modified Condition/Decision Coverage (MC/DC) - VectorCAST, RapiTest Configuration Management / Storage and Version Control System - Git, SourceSafe, Mercurial, MS TFS QA - Helix ALM (I)V&V / Test Automation - VectorCAST, LDRA Testbed , Mathworks Simulink DO Qualification Kit Continuous Integration / CD - Continuous Delivery/Deployment And what is the general attitude towards open source software (ex. FreeRTOS) and code-generation tools (ex. ST's Cube MX)? Also, how do CPLD and FPGAs fit in to the picture.. since not exactly software, but they are programmable devices written in an programming language like VHDL , (system) verilog , Amaranth HDL ?

Many automotive software components rely on "GoogleTest" in their unit testings. What is the best approach to qualify/certify "GoogleTest" as an acceptable component for use in testing of safety critical software?

Hey professor, I have some questions about embedded systems. I've always liked low level development. Can embedded systems work be done remotely online, or do you have to physically go to the lab? Because I want to live in a rural area and grow my own vegetables, not being tied to any particular urban area. So if I can do an embedded systems job remotely and live in a rural area that would be great. Also I want to know is embedded systems development less susceptible to AI automation comparing to higher level development? I have been looking at how web development is predicted to getting automated away by autocoder tools, that you have these business people creating web apps using ChatGPT, just slapping together some code and deploying a full site. I wonder if embedded systems are a more stable career choice, since the engineer must know much more low level details? Actually I like these low level details. I've worked in C/C++ programmers, and Assembly code, and Compiler Development before. Please answer me. Thank you in advance.

The best thing is that you have to go to sleep between 9 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. and get up at 5 a.m. Review your completed work daily and evaluate your progress. Always seek feedback from your manager and the same colleagues. Remember that consistency, dedication and of course patience will take you forward.

Would the following software be considered safety critical? Software that managed the launching of nuclear weapons, which are inherently hazardous. Couldn't any number of elements in the software, including even input data that is incorrectly altered somehow, have to be treated as safety critical?

Fisrt of all to be embedded systems software engineer, you should learn comupter architercture memory structures and then C as well as assembly, because Assembly is low level programming language and during developing for instance CPU there are many issue that you should solve it with assembly language after that data structure and algorithms linux and so on

Software engineer here. I am having a very very hard time... Even with things such as basic device drivers. I feel like it would have been a lot easier to be an electronics cracked and slowly learn how to program. I swear hardware is not something enjoyable to learn by yourself... I might just go back to uni but hell I m 26 🥲

Whatever you do make sure you start investing in your first job. They dont want your old ass in these tech jobs once you hit 50. So , if you get a degree in CS and you turn 50 and you dont have enough invested to where you could stop working that day, YOU FAILED. If you dont have a million at least invested by 40 you FAILED. Take this into account when considering your phd. Because thats years doing the phd where you wont be earning enough to invest a lot and TIME IS PRECIOUS. And you dont learn anything in there that cant be found on youtube so you can still do badass work in tech without the phd. Look at elon musk the guy only has a BSc.

Firstly, why would anyone call themselves Prof.Dr? That makes no sense. Secondly, this guy only has 240 citations. I had more during my time as a PhD Candidate. I think it is best not to listen to people working at very low level universities. Thanks.

Michael, Prof. Dr. is an official academic title in Germany. As I discussed in the video doing a PhD is a personal development step, I don’t think the number of publications and or citations is mattering here a lot. What is your opinion was your PhD worth doing it?
