I put descriptions against my photos on Google Photos but when I search against them, they do not show up. Any advice? Thanks!
Thank you! This is amazing, indeed!
Can you delete a photo from photos, after adding it to an album? I think no because when I delete that photo from photos, it gets deleted from the album too. It’s weird as I can either keep all photos or delete all of them.
I mostly scan negatives and use the Epson V850. I prefer it over the V600 because it will scan negatives in an 8x10 area instead of a single strip down the center of the scanner bed. I put my negatives into polypropylene negative holders that come in 8-1/2 x 11 sheets from PrintFile for many different sizes of negatives - they eventually go into a 3-ring binder - and then I place the entire sheet on the scanner. I use VueScan to do a preview, then place cropping rectangles around each image I want to scan. (The folks at Hamrick are trying to automate this process, but they're not quite there yet.) I then batch-scan the images I've outlined at 16 bits per pixel for B/W negatives and 48 bits for color in order to preserve as much dynamic range as possible. The only adjustment I do during scanning is to crop the histogram, which results in a crude exposure adjustment, and I do the rest in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. One challenge I have scanning negatives is sorting them into chronological order prior to inserting them into the polypropylene sheets. Another challenge is cleaning the negatives adequately, I wish I had watched this video before I started, but you hadn't made it yet so there's that. One must be very careful not to scratch negatives, and static electricity can defeat even the best of intentions when cleaning negatives. I rely far too much on the spot healing tool in Photoshop to remove dust, which is very time-consuming, I should have paid more attention to cleaning. The bottom line is that your negatives may look clean, but they probably aren't. The challenge of naming files is very real when scanning lots of negatives. I kind of wish I had just used sequential numbers, because when you are doing many hundreds of negatives that are scrambled chronologically, other schemes can get out of control or paint you into a corner.
I've been working through boxes of old negatives (dating back to 1920) for the last few years, and I went with VueScan - probably the user interface on SilverFast pushed me away from it. Plus I bought VueScan when it had a lifetime price - buy it once and get free updates forever. Pretty good deal! They've since changed their pricing model, and I like it well enough that I've donated additional money to the cause even though I didn't have to 🙂. (My scanner is a V850 attached to a Mac, but I also have a V600 attached to a Windows computer.) I guess I would probably still choose VueScan over SilverFast even though the latter has more post processing features because I prefer to do editing and corrections in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. I archive raw scanned images as well as the final edited versions, with the hope that someday there will be AI filters to fix camera motion during exposure and maybe do something with film grain. Since I scan mostly negatives, I use 48-bit TIF for the archived raw scans (or 16-bit TIF for B/W negatives), which gives me some dynamic range for adjusting exposure. I assume SilverFast will also do 48-bit scans, but that would be a deal-breaker for me if it didn't.
I'm not a huge fan of using Lightroom Classic and never found an easy way to add Metadata to all my images in one go using the Lightroom version for mobile and computer. This video has saved me so many hours buy being able to add Metadata to all of my images in one go, thank you so much for a quick and easy video.
I have a love-hate relationship with Lightroom Classic so I totally understand. For quickly added and sorting Bridge is great! Happy I could help 😊
Tuneup does not remove Apple DRM!!!
I'm impressed with the technical knowledge you share. Thanks! One of my quandaries is how to date photos of indeterminate date of origin. I inherited boxes of negatives dating back to 1920, and I can't always come up with a precise date. Okay, honestly, I can never come up with a precise date. One wonders if there is some kind of system for specifying approximate dates, and then searching or sorting based on that notation. A wish I have is that we need a uniform system for identifying people in images in the metadata, such as a name, face location in the image, and maybe a radius so that a viewing program could easily pop up circles around faces along with names, for example. I have heard some say, "Just put their names in the filename!" Of course that breaks down with the 100th photo with Uncle Ron in it, and doesn't work at all with photos of large groups of relatives or classmates. Maybe you've addressed these issues, I haven't looked at all your content yet. 🤷♂
For dates, if you only know the rough year I use 1st of January of the decide or year, and if I know the month but not day again, do the 1st of the month. For adding all the details, metadat is your option. 😊
should have added MAC to the title. I don't own a MAC and your video quickly became non-relevant to what I thought it was going to be.
My apps data is taking up storage. But if I erase the data in my apps it erases everything and I have to start all over again. What is the solution ❓
Check if what you have downloaded on apps like Spotify and Netflixs. Then also go into each large app, under storage you can clear the cache to save some space.😊
@@amandalittlecott thanks for writing back but that's what I was trying to say, I've already erased all the cache on the apps I use the most. Plus I have two game apps that hog up a lot of data and I've already deleted the cache.
Would you like to marry me?
How do I load my photos?
Depends where they are, if they are on your phone download the app and set up auto backup. If they are on your computer use the desktop app. 😊
You noted at one point you can add keywords, but then didn't show anything about doing that? It seems it might be a key to creating a form of 'collections' if you use consistent keywords? Is there any way to use metadata as a basis for collections? I had glanced at Bridge, & saw it had TWO different levels of metadata. 1 was basic, as you showed, but one was more advanced, allowing more free use of words, which seems they could be a basis for collections? since you say bridge is like an explorer, which should mean you can search within it based on words??
Check out these I have done into a bit more detail into metadata and smart albums kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJWDudJmnJCWdc4.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/aqaFrq6CnsWyp5c.html 😊
Took you 2 mins to get the point smh
I subscribed to photomyne, but I'm finding it impossible to find a place, inside or outside, where there's no shadow, reflection, light reflection. Any suggestions?
If you get a couple of lights and put one on the left, one on the right that should help. Also if you use a stand for your phone. If that is not working and you are OK with doing one by one check out Google Photoscan, kzread.info/dash/bejne/hn-CyrSLk5y5eco.html it is pretty good at avoiding reflections and glare.😊
How simple. Thank you.
Yup simple and important 😊
has amazon removed the family vault function? i dont see it any more on the web or mobile app....
I am so confused. Can you please help? I had an accident with a very strong magnet and my EHD backup of my entire photo history got corrupted. Amazon Photos is now the only place my entire photo history exists, including the vast majority of photos from my son's first few years. I want to download all my photos from Amazon Photos onto a new EHD so I am not dependent on Amazon forever, and also so I can back that up to Backblaze and never be in this position again. BUT, when I used the Amazon Photos desktop app, and used the Download then "All" route to download everything to my EHD, it only downloaded what was already in my folders in Amazon. I don't know how anything even got into folders on Amazon. Is there a way to add photos from Amazon Photos into the Folders on Amazon Photos? Or is there a way to get my entire Amazon Photos library downloaded without having to do each individual picture or album? I had asked Amazon customer service first and they assured me when i used the "download" then "all" route from the desktop app, it would download my entire photo library, but it did not. It only downloaded what was in the folders, so much of 2016 and 2017 are missing. Do you have any advice, please?
Oh dear! First check when you are downloading that you are selection the all photos and not the albums. Then if the desktop doesn't work try some of thr photos through the browser option just to make sure that they will download there as that means they are on Amazon somewhere. You can select multiples from the Web browser, but you might need some patience. If I think of something else I'll let you know!😊
it is a good way to view, but would it be possible to capture the positive as a picture?
Not with a photo from your phone directly but there are some great apps out there, check out Filmbox by Photomyne 😊
You recommend 'A Better Finder Atributes' for changing dates. (Bulk scans therefore no original date.). Does Adobe Bridge not do this?
Yes it can, but with Better Finder Attributes you can do a ton in a batch and it is great for videos... it is just quicker. But yes if you have patience you can with Adobe bridge 😊
So helpful
Always happy to help 😊
Thanks, I purchased Photo Date Changer and it works perfectly. I can fix my scanned photos to show up in the correct year and date of my other photo apps. Not bad for $10 considering I have been looking for a while at something this easy.
Sound advise & works well. Can you build a 'tag library' so that you can import the tag or tags rather than typing them in each time?
Not without a proper programme but you might like to try Adobe Bridge for mass tagging... check it our here kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4drlcGSg5C5oKQ.html 😊
I was pretty stoked until I realize that was just 1 gb for $10. Maybe it makes sense to backup ONLY your favorite photos?
Yeah not cheap but if you do the calculation for how much you will pay for Apple Photos over the years it might be worth it!😊
Love your videos. I have an issue - Dates are correct in google photos taken July 2021. I downloaded to my laptop. In downloads folder date is correct date but after moving them to a folder date modified says 1899 12 29.
Couple of questions, by moving then are you copying and pasting, drag and drop... what are you doing? Also what date is in correct the creation date? And one more Mac or PC?😊
Hey, I was wondering- is there a way to manually select how many photos you want to be backed up to amazon photos on mobile? In my case, I have a shared amazon photo account with my family for photos we take on vacation, and I have a lot of good photos but, I also have a lotttt of junk photos that I don’t want to back up to our shared family account. Lmk if theres a manual select option for back up, it would help, and thx for great content as always 🙏
So it depends on what phone you have, on an iPhone sadly no, it is all or nothing. On an Android yes, you can pick what albums you want it to back up under the upload settings. So yes and no! 😊
amazing thank you
Alwayshappy to help 😊
Seems expensive though? 200gb would be 2000 quid?
Yeah not the cheapest but think of how much you could spend on Apple Photos over the years!😊
Does it store raw photos?
Technically yes, you can store any file type, but they have a list on their FAQ of files that work the beat for storage 😊
There is no i somewhere on the screen of my Android phone. Joann where the i is actually located in close up would have been so much more helpful
When you don't have space to download another app but need to download another app to make space😭
Oh I feel your pain there. Videos are a great thing to review as they can take up a ton of space. Happy cleaning😊
My pictures are in Photos and this will not read it
Are your Photos downloaded to your computer or optimised, so in the cloud, that might be the issue!😊
What is your go-to option to rename your photos?
Thanks for this. However, I want photos I take on WhatsApp not to be saved on my phone at all. I already don't have other peoples' images saving onto my phone, but it's the one's I take in WhatsApp. When I want to use my phone's camera to take a photo (not in WhatsApp just as a camera) obviously I want that to save. But when I take a photo or video in WhatsApp, once I've sent it I don't want it to clog up my phone's memory at all. If I want to see it I'll be able to look at that chat in WhatsApp, I don't want to have it in my phone's memory. Is that possible?
Google Photos and drive is more good to use as you ca use sync Google with both Ios and Andriod and it works on all platform so changing phones isnt a problem.
Yes very true, it does sync very nicely! 😊
Thanks you for video that explain thing that I need this video is very much video thank you
Always happy to help!😊
adobe for sure, unfortunately
Just watch out for their sneaky AI functionality that they have just added to the standard programmes. 😊
Sorry but it is not a good idea to use google take out to download your photos in google photos because it looses all metadata! This is a huge deal. Unfortunately there is no way to do it unless you do it manually... photo by photo, video by video. I have not found a simpler way, sorry.
Yes any metadata changes you do in Google will not come with it, which is such a pain!
I accidentally deleted all my songs/playlist off my iPod touch several months back. Any chance this program can recover them to the way I had them before?
Unfortunately, unless you have an offline copy, so on a hard drive that is not syncing to the cloud, which you could recover from, they will be gone. That is the reason why iCloud is not a backup, it is a syncing service so no recovery possible. Sorry 😊
Does Smugmug comply with zero-knowledge policy? Does it offer unlimited storage?
They do offer unlimited storage, although the length of videos are limited to 20 minutes. For your data, they have a comprehensive terms and conditions, as they need to look at your photos to see all the metadata, but they don't use AI (yet) so it is not about training just making sure the service works as you would want. 😊
Isn't it a shame that Windows and maybe the Apple systems are essentially defective , thus necessitating the utilities you describe?
Photos can just sometimes have a life of their own! 😊
amazing... thank you soooo much... figured there must be an easy way to convert over 250 pictures to a format other than PSD that Facebook and Google recognise... This video was a life saver. Thank you Amanda... the files are converting as I type. 🙂
Hi! I have a Macbook Pro 16" running Sonoma 14.5. I have a love/hate with Apple. How do I get my photos into SmugMug from my Macbook Pro? It used to be easy, but not way to access "Albums"! HELP!!!!!
Actually do you have an iPhone? Because the quickest way would be to install the Smugmug app on your phone and setup autobackup to you SmugMug account.
Hi Amanda, great information! I stumbled across your channel today and am amazed at all the helpful info you provide. New sub here! However, I have a bunch of slides & negatives that I'd like to scan and digitize and I couldn't find any videos from you on this topic. Did I miss it? I'm currently looking at the Kodak 7" Digital Film Scanner, but I didn't know if there's a better option out there. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to get those slides digitized! Many thanks!
Hi, I have a video about how to prepare your slides for scanning, kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKtkpKdspbSumtI.html but I will add one to the list to do one about specialist scanning options. Keep an eye out for it!😊
This saves me so much time. Thank you!
You are very welcome... I am all about saving time!😊
Oooo how exciting... I can feel the files converting across time and space 😮
Flickr
Nice!
Thanks, this is exactly the comparison I was looking for!
Yay! Happy to help!😊
What is your favourite cloud storage for all your photos?
It only let me move 50 songs I have 800
Do you have the paid version, you are limited on how much you can transfer on the free, trial version 😊
You need to pay for it then......
Great video, what software would you use with the scanner, specifically the V600?
Ah a very good question and one that has come up before so I did some testing... check this video out kzread.info/dash/bejne/eoFpr7iAmpPJc7Q.html
