England were finally fed up with getting stuffed in Cardiff every 2 years (and at Twickenham to be honest) and the niggle started early in this game. Nothing really changed until that dreadful RWC quarter final in `87, but the English team at least were beginning to stand up for themselves. Wales on the other hand really had nothing but niggle to offer at this time, and for many years to come, so that really set the scene for this game.

The problem was, nobody wanted him selected for the ABs in the first place because of his hot and cold 'style '. Then when he was picked and played the way he did... well

Poor guy he was only 21 at the time. He just got off to a bad start and then psychologically fell apart after a loss of confidence. Probably stared panicking and 2nd guessing himself. I think that's happened to us all in certain stages of life playing sport, but usually not in front of 1000's of people at a test match and on the TV!

I remember this guy,his rise was absolutely amazing, during the national provincial competition, there was no doubting his skills and speed, which led him being selected in the all Black's ..he had a nack of slicing through between the 13 and 14 at Pace from fullback.. those are the games i remember of him..

Not my best work but a few weeks after he was dropped from the ABs he lined up for Suburbs against Pakuranga, me and a pal riled him from the sidelines to the extent he came looking for us after the final whistle. He was pretty annoyed and gave it to us, quite rightly so.

I remember watching this match on the telly - didn't sit down for the entire match. England were up 17-0 and Dan Luger was giving Scotland so many problems. He was quiet after Alan Tait careered over him, though.

This is where VAR comes into its own. In today's game, yellow for Hall and reds for Davies and Dooley. Thank you very much. Problem solved. Back in the '80s, though, it was a zoo.
